Title: Unrated Film Fans (Article I'm Writing)
Post by: dcj2112 on April 09, 2011, 06:49:37 PM
Hi all,

I hope I'm not breaking any rules, but I checked the rules and I don't think I am so if I am moderators just let me know.

Anyway, I'm trying to plug a hole in an article I'm writing for the Columbia News Service. I'm try to get some more unrated film fans and thought this would be a good place to go. If you are interested just e-mail me your answers to these three questions at my e-mail address dcjohnson86@gmail.com. Also, I need your full name and what city/state you are in.

1. Why do you like unrated films?

2. What do you think the allure of unrated films are?

3. Do you think having unrated films play in regular movie theaters (i.e. Regal, AMC, etc.) gives them a better sense of legitimacy? Also, is there anything you would like to add?

Thanks to anyone who helps!

If you don't mind me asking, what do you mean by "unrated films"?  Are we talking indie movies that didn't go through the MPAA process?  Porn?  Movies that have an "unrated version"?

Sure, no problem. I am mostly interested in movies that were left unrated because of content that likely would not make it past the MPAA. Some of the more extreme horror movies and that kind of thing.

You pretty much answered your own question there. No.1 at least...

I have yet to see "The Taint", but Drew Balduc's previous work, "The Godening", had it's moments, blending social commentary with slob humor...

Albeit, I found the set ups funnier than the punch lines...

I can't speak with too much authority here because I haven't done alot of actively seeking out unrated movies. Generally if I find myself in the situation of wanting porn, I go get porn. I don't go get the unrated version of some mainstream movie.

It's good that you clarified though, a good deal of straight to video movies (including kids movies) and movies which simply pre-date/never went through MPAA are also "unrated" but these aren't really what your asking about.

as for your question #3 IMO this is not a good idea. Inevitably some idiot will bring his 7 yr old to the show, some Helen Lovejoy will go screaming "won't someone please think of the children" and then we would have a clamp-down on the ratings/censoring system.

1)I don't like unrated films, since 97% of it is either some crap ass slasher film or some "comedy", which just includes a few extra minutes of pointless d!ck/boob/beer/whatever jokes, which are just, as I said, pointless.
2) Horror or "comedy"
3) no, it will only show the amount of crappiness the film has to offer. seriously, when was there a good comedy film right after one? all it is: just one waste of time and money.

Thank you to the posters who have responded so far as I appreciate the insight. I was hoping to get some more fans I could use in the article and get your real names, which you can e-mail me at dcjohnson86@gmail.com

Also, just to be transparent my name is Daniel Johnson  I can even give you my phone number if you would prefer to talk rather than e-mail, but I'd have to send that privately as its probably best not to post it publicly.

Thanks again for all the info so far, and I hope to write/talk to some of you

I get all shades of warm nostalgic fuzziness from the blurb:

There is no explicit sex in this picture.
However, there are scenes of violence which may be considered shocking.
No one under 17 will be admitted.

To answer the 3 questions:

1. Gory horror flicks are enjoyable to me.  Not remotely scary, but exciting and interesting.. I appreciate good action with the horror along with good effects.
2. Sort of answered above.
3. I think it sort of belongs in the past.  Sort of a time capsule thing.  Young, impressionable kids really shouldn't see this stuff until they have a firm grasp on how the violence onscreen isn't real; how the actors don't really die, how the blood they spit up comes from a capsule or a tube, etc.  So an NC-17 rating of today is good enough.

I've found that out un-rated films in the US tend to be rated in the UK.

So it's utterly pointless. I love the unrated version of Dawn of the Dead (which is rated 18 in the UK haha). I used to think unrated films were super cool, untill I realised at least when it comes to violence it was only an extra split second shot that I was missing.

The BBFC are very good at judging the tone of films, flicks like Evil Dead don't get cut anymore, in fact, Evil dead II had its certificate reduced from an 18 to a 15! The same with The Terminator.

When it comes to sex, the BBFC don't really cut anything - no matter how graphic - unless it's decided sex for sex sake. Basically porn. Or that the sex is used to promote dangerous behavior in a postive light. A graphic rape scene that shows the victim enjoying it would be an example of something that would have to be edited to excude any graphic shots. I think A Serbian Film got cut a lot that way.

Its only really Troma that gets cut for release here. Which is odd as their tone is pretty stupid. I think if there was a steady distribution for Troma there films should get pass the cuts if they were re-submitted.
But here aren't really any Troma being distributed here anyway which makes the whole thing pointless.

I think unrated movies are so "watered down" now.  In the 1970s and 80s, unrated movies were often horror movies that had too much gore to be rated "R."  For example, I saw the unrated DAWN OF THE DEAD, EVIL DEAD, MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY, and several others in theaters back then.  They were uncommon and it usually felt "special" when you went to see them.  Now, there are dozens and dozens of movies that get "unrated" DVD releases.  This usually amounts to about 2 - 4 minutes of added footage that would raise the movie from a "PG-13" to maybe an "R."  Really just a gimmic to sell more DVDs.

I've found that out un-rated films in the US tend to be rated in the UK.

They tend to not submit the additional stuff for rating to claim it unrated.  Rating here is voluntary.  Most want the rating simply because it is easier to market or like video games they can be sold in certain establishments.  I think the local Family Video chain here still runs rental stores but won't rent unrated movies.
