Title: Places You'd Bring Visiting Board Members In Your Area
Post by: Mr. DS on April 22, 2011, 10:03:04 PM
So hypothetically speaking, one or a bunch of board members come over to your house to visit.  Based on what you know about them, where would you take them?

Pretty much everyone on the board here I'd take to two different placeds in the RI area.  The first one being Lizzie Borden's house in MA which is about 20 minutes from my house.

Secondly, I'd probably take everyone to visit different parts of Providence that related to HP Lovecraft.  I've never personally been unlike the Borden house, but I'd probably like to go with a group of people with similar interests.  His grave is out there as well.

Now for specific members.
RCMerchant I'd take out to the local antique stores next to the ocean based on his love of collecting.
Circus I'd probably take out to the bar scene, especially if they were having a retro 80s show.
Trevor I'd probably bring to the local filmhouse to catch a flick.
Indianasmith I think would enjoy hitting up some local historical areas.
Andrew and Jack I'd take to my in law's farm to see my garden.
Newt I'd probably take to a polo match based on her love of horses.  Yep, they do that in my area.

Definitely give folks a tour of the station, & if I could get my printer working (or find a new one), show some pictures & tell some stories about how drastically the place has improved since 2006.

Maybe the civil war museum, & share some old family stories about some improvements my mom's grandfather made to the grounds, despite the fact that developers since then have undone all his work.

I've never been to the Poe Museum or the Holocaust Museum, so it might be a good excuse. (I understand Beau Marie made a documentary for the Holocaust Museum about a survivor in the area who has a sense of humor about his ordeal, & how he learned to live again following the war.)

I might try to point out a few landmarks which appeared in films like The Shadow Conspiracy, Finnigin Begin Again, etc.

Perhaps Gallery 5, which was once the city's first firehouse & police station, & if possible, introduce folks to owner Tom Robinson, who can tell a tale or two about the place, as well as some of the more macabre moments in Richmond history.

Perhaps on a Saturday Night, I take folks to The Richmond Movie Palace (formerly The Byrde Theater) to see Bob Gulledge play the Mighty Wurlitzer, then go get a Ruben & come back for the Midnight Movie.

If anything's going on at the Richmond International Raceway, or perhaps just drive by it to point out the home of the I-Book Riots.

I haven't been to Busch Gardens since I was a kid. It might be fun to ride the Apollo's Chariot & sit in the same seat where Fabio collided with a duck. Then maybe take a tour of the Busch Brewery, even though I don't drink anymore, and the beer of choice around these parts is Pabst Blue Ribbon.

It might be fun to visit Goochland's Field Day of the Past http://www.fielddayofthepast.net/

Which happens to be right next to the gas station where I filmed my opening scene from Comfort Zone

Well, it's either go for a beer in a pub or go get indian food. There's absolutely nowhere to go or anything interesting to see or do where I happen to live.

Well, we could drive up on top of a hill where there's a scenic overlook of the town.  That's pretty, for as long as you want to stand there and look at it.  The Mississippi runs right through here.  We could look at barges and stuff  :teddyr:  Bunch of bars in town, they're all dives pretty much.  Full of blitzed college students.

We could drink some beer and watch a movie.  That's pretty much the pinnacle of excitement in this neck of the woods I'm afraid.

I'm fortunate enough to live in a town - Savannah, GA - practically crawling with stuff for bad movie fans to do.

Definitely Bonaventure Cemetary (http://www.bonaventurecemeterytours.com/). Not only is it wonderfully creepy even in broad daylight but scenes for MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL and CITY OF THE DEAD were filmed there. I'm counting on an invite to visit Bonaventure will be the tipping point to get Trevor to the USA!  :teddyr:

There's several ghost tours every day of the city; the best ghost is probably Poor Rene (http://www.hauntedlowcountry.com/index.php?/hauntlow/georgia/the_story_of_rene_asche_rondolier/).

For the literary minded a tour of the Flannery O'Connor Museum would seem right. That extremely bad Miley Cyrus movie THE LAST SONG was filmed on nearby Tybee Island. The fake wedding chapel they built for the movie is still standing and people are actually getting married there now. Life imitates art!

True bad movie buffs, we can scour nearby Port Wentworth for any surviving locales from SQUIRM. When I asked some locals if the diner where the guy gets an worm in his egg creme is still around they looked at me like I was CRAZY.   :buggedout:

I grew up with stories about swampy parts of the lake filled with cottonmouths that would swarm you like flies if you put one foot in the water.  If they didn't get you, the snapping turtles would. And they would bite you and not let go until it thundered! For us the movie FROGS was a documentary!  :teddyr:

We're suposed to have coral snakes around here, but I haven't seen one yet.

When I was a little kid in Wappinger Falls,NY, there was a homemade racetrack the teenagers use. Basically it was an old field. It was swarming with copperheads! Didn't keep my little ass (6 years old) from going over there and watching the big kids have fun! My dad grabbed a live copperhead by the neck and held it up to me-"See that boy? This will kill you!" f**kem. I'd sneak over there anyway. I wasn't fraid of snakes. Wasps! They scared me! I was walking in an old junkyard- about the same time-kicked an old car muffler-f**kin wasps stung the hell outta me! You can dance around a snake-no dancing with wasps.
(My parents didnt give a dam where I was-as long as I wasnt under there feet-was fine with me.)

Nothing exciting to show where I live, unless you are interested in fish farming (carp). There are about seventy carp lakes in a 18 miles radius. Various sizes but they all look the same.
Other than that we have a small tower museum filled with local history stuff, and our town is somewhat famous because two storks breed every year on the old fire department's roof.
We also have lots and lots of fields, meadows, forests and a hill called Swede redoubt - that's where brave locals tried to fend off attacking Swedes in 1633, but the Swedes pretty much destroyed the town.
There is an old castle about 3 miles out of town. Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom and Christoph Waltz resided there last year September/October while filming The Three Musketeers.

That's about it.

We have rattlesnakes. So there.  :tongueout:

Anyone visiting me from here should expect to make an obligatory trip (all of a mile and a half) to get their picture taken by the World's largest catfish statue:

Then, depending on the time of year, we could attend the Toronto After Dark Film Festival
http://www.torontoafterdark.com/2010/

We could go play "Children of the Corn" at http://www.richardsonsfarm.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6&Itemid=6  - and pick up supplies for dinner on our way out.

For those who are interested in 'natural wonders' that do not require structured undergarments...and even those who do ...we are near the Niagara Escarpment and we could trek on in to Niagara Falls, Canada (all of 45 minutes away).   There is a movie wax musem, a Ripley's, a haunted house, and all sorts of kitschy goodness!
http://www.ripleysniagara.com/
http://www.cliftonhill.com/attractions/movieland-wax-museum-stars
http://www.screamersniagara.com/

For the war and history buffs: there are many heritage sites, the Underground Railroad Tour and

http://www.dunnvilleairport.com/museum.php
http://www.warplane.com/
and
http://www.battlefieldhouse.ca/reenactment.asp

We have winery tours and events: lots of vinyards locally.

We are close enough to Toronto that access to the museums and sights there is easy.  Museums, the CN Tower, major sports events, the Ontario Science Centre, theatres, concerts  - all the trappings of a major city.

Lots of local outings for nature lovers, as well: many beaches, conservation areas and zoos.

I'd take Trevor to a zoo so he could see a moose.  :buggedout:
I'd take The Darksider to the Canadian National Exhibition - our biggest fair - the tawdry old lady might be right up his alley.
I'd have a BBQ/get-together for ulthar with other horse show parents so we could share 'war stories'
I'd take RC to Niagara Falls just so I could listen to him talk about older movies   :teddyr:
I'd take Andrew, The Rev and AHD to the TAD film festival and perhaps tour some wineries - maybe not together...
I'd take Jack on a trail ride through the Dundas Valley Conservation area.
I'd turn Circus and Doggett loose in the city with some of my younger friends...starting on Queen Street West (Is that still 'cool'?) - and pick them up whenever (no way would I even pretend I could keep up with them!)

I'm sure I will think of other 'personalised' outings...that's what I have for now.

Not much here in the way of entertainment, but we have plenty of natural attractions - lakes, scenic lookouts, trails, wildlife. Maybe go for a swim or a boat ride on the lake, do some fishing, take a hike through the woods to see some of the nicer views, and visit the dump to watch the bears. And if you want your picture taken next to something big, there is a giant Muskoka chair about ten minutes away.

Depending on the length of the visit, there are a few other attractions to be found an hour or two away. Santa's Village, for example, where you can have Christmas-themed fun all summer long. Or the wildlife centre, not far from there, where you can see wolves, bears, cougars, moose, eagles, etc.

The giant catfish is even more impressive than I'd imagined. Now I really do need to make a side trip to Dunnville next time I'm in Caledonia.

I'm still of the opinion that my town needs some giant attraction people will get off the highway to photograph. Maybe a giant sunflower, although now I can't think about such things without imagining a "big, dirty hoe on the corner;" thank you very much, Corner Gas. :teddyr:

I would make dinner for any and all visitors.  Many people claim to make great meatballs.  Few do.  I do.

The boardwalk in Asbury Park... maybe the Paramount Theater for a concert (I saw TONY BENNETT and TOM JONES there, not long ago) they also have film festivals.  A drink at Aqua or Stella Marina (also on the boardwalk) a walk through historic Ocean Grove (just south down the boardwalk - it's also where WOODY ALLEN filmed STARDUST MEMORIES).  I understand BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN turns up routinely at the Wonderbar and jams with the house band... not being a fan, I've avoided it.  The NEW YORK DOLLS sometimes appear at The Stone Pony!!   :teddyr:

Primarily outdoors but I'd recommend the summer (July-August-maybe September) over any other time of the year. There's fantastic scenery to be found throughout my province and it's undoubtably its best feature. I personally love the local Museums so I'd definitely recommend those. Most tourists who come here love to go on boat trips to see icebergs and/or whales but they aren't always there to be found (primarily they are around in April-June for icebergs)...there's an entertaining dinner theatre although that's a little pricey.

Andy, "Muddy" looks even better at night: they did a good job with the lighting.  Very effective.

I forgot about our Mudcat Festival in June: http://www.dunnvillechamberofcommerce.ca/mudcat.php - though I am not sure that it classes as an "attraction" really. It's a good old-fashioned small town celebration, several days long. The fireworks are often quite spectacular and the food events get rave reviews.  Chili cookoffs and fish (perch) fries!

For motorheads, we have the Cayuga Speedway close by: http://www.cayugamotorspeedway.ca/

I do have to say that if you are looking to experience truly gorgeous Canadian scenery, you should be sure to visit AndyC or JaseSF.  They have my area beat, hands down!

Haha Its still there, There was a restaurant that opened in 2008, but it closed really. I think there are offices in it now. Its kinda just there, and it isn't being used as wig storage like The Simpsons might lead you to believe. I went up in it once when I was a young kid, but only for a few minutes. I don't even think the public can go up in it anymore. We could try to go up in it. Its really not that exciting though. Knoxville still makes a big deal about the worlds fair like it was yesterday, so i'm kinda surprised about its condition.

Morristown is about an hour from Knoxville. We could all go to where The cabin from The Evil Dead was located. The cabins burned down but the fireplace is still there. and the cellar door. Thats a place i'm going when I'm able to go random places by myself!

I mentioned that in my COTLD review on here: that cemetery is really creepy with those vines that seem to be living and I would love to see it, Savannah and my good friend there someday.  That apart, I would also like to go on the Mercer House tour but with my luck, I would feel a cold tap on my shoulder, turn around and it would be the ghost of Jim Williams offering me something cold to drink.  :buggedout: :buggedout: :drink:

I'd take Trevor to a zoo so he could see a moose.  :buggedout:

 :teddyr: :teddyr:

I see enough ladies in Brooklyn Mall on a Saturday with hairstyles that look like mooses.  :buggedout:

:teddyr:

Ah, The Stone Pony.  Place is legendary.  Bam Bam Bigelow worked there, Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes.  Was supposed to go there last summer for something but it fell through.

A zoo? I've had a moose wander through my back yard. :teddyr:

REVERE BEACH - We'd start bar-hopping at the Winthrop end around 7 p.m.  By the time we got to Kelly's Roast Beef, we'd be drunk and very hungry.  Perfect timing!

Philly is home to The Mutter Museum.  It is a museum, of sorts, with a huge collection of medical human oddities.  Quite the stop.

Also...cheesesteaks and such.  Citizens Bank Park.

I've always wanted to visit the Mutter Museum!

They have Chang and Eng Bunker's conjoined liver in a bottle!

I've always wanted to go to the Mutter Museum too!  I was in Pennsylvania about 2 1/2 years ago, but I couldn't go to the Mutter Museum because I was with my mom and she wouldn't have liked that.  So instead I wanted to go to the Country Kettle Village, but when I went to tell my mom where it was - Intercourse, PA - I couldn't get myself to say it out loud and just started laughing so hard that I peed a little... I can't believe I'm a parent  :bluesad:.  We should all go on a road trip to both these places!

I don't really know a place that I would take anyone to except maybe the drive-in or roller skating, so I would make you guys come over to my place and play Pictionary with me until I passed out from the excitement!

Intercourse, PA is also nearby the towns Bird-in-Hand, PA and Blue Ball, PA.

You have to be wary of moose on the highways in these parts especially if driving at night. Slowing down is a good idea especially in areas where you see signs warning of them.

Anyways some pics from my area and not too far away...

This is a pretty spot, just a short drive around the lake from here. It's one of the first places I'd take a visitor.

And a random bit of shoreline.

Shots of the town wharf from either end. I can see it from the front of my shop, but from the angle of the second photo, the shop is hidden behind the brown building closest to the water.

I'd take you all out to the Mall of America then take the light rail downtown to Nicollet Mall, eat at a nice restaurant then go see a play.

Assuming I had money on this trip of course.
