Title: Superman no longer American...
Post by: Doggett on April 30, 2011, 09:58:14 AM

Intresting story that.
I kinda get why, but still...

The cheesy Americaness of Superman has always been part of the charater even the I'll admit the "Truth, Justica and The American Way is a little patronising, it's still part of him.

Next: James Bond ditches Britain to become a global super spy.

And Then: Nikolai Dante ditches Russia to be more intergratted.

Not a big deal. He's not even American anyway, he's an alien.

I read "Superman: Red Son" not so long ago, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_Red_Son (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman_Red_Son))

It tells the story of what would have happened if Superman came to Earth 12 hours earlier and landed in the USSR. He's raised on a collective farm and embraces Communism, even becoming Stalin's successor. It even includes a fur-hatted Russian Batman who is a terrorist trying to bring Superman down.

It's an awesome book and I highly recommend it.

Just part of the ongoing anti-Americanism of the American entertainment industry.
Makes me feel like shipping all of them off to North Korea for a year.

See how cruel and repressive Uncle Sam is then, you ungrateful, whining b********s!!!

If a Brit can play Superman, an American should play Doctor Who! I say that because I alway's wanted to be Doctor Who!

Oh yeah, these people really need a vacation in these places they think are better than America.  Y'know, places where Bibles, Western dress and hairstyles and opposing political opinions usually mean your sudden and permanent departure from the world of the living (OR a nice rat-infested jail cell if you're lucky.)

Better yet, how about a holiday in Cambodia? Yeah...live off a bowl of rice a day, slaving away under a hot sun in a s**thole rice paddy, and then get executed by one of Pol Pot's soldiers because you looked at him the wrong way.

We'll see how the Limousine Libs like it then.... :bouncegiggle:

This whole thing just STINKS at trying to be apologetically politically sensitive in a place where it just has no right to be at all.

Well Brits play Nazis in BBC specials about WW2, ands Alec Guinness played Hitler in Hitler, The Last Ten Days, so I guess Nazis with British accents is OK too?    :bouncegiggle:

And then we had Sean Connery playing a Russian sub captain with a Scottish accent in The Hunt For Red October.   Who seen that one comin'?

Don't forget Connery was a Spainard in Highlander.
With a Scottish accent of course.

Many American and British actors play other nationalites. Lou Diamond Phillips has played everything from a Native American to a Mexican. In the old days it wasn't uncommon for white actors to play American Indians and Asians.

Damien Lewis in Band of Brothers, Dominic West and Idris Elba in The Wire...

I don't see why an American couldn't play Doctor Who. Pierce Brosnan was Bond and he's an Irishman.

Costarring with a Belgian playing a Scotsman posing as an American. And yet, I love the movie.

Seriously though, I don't see why the Doctor would always need to be British, other than it's a British show. Eric Roberts played the Master, and I thought his performance was good campy fun.

So was Sylvester McCoy.

Scotland isn't much of a stretch. It's still part of the UK, which is more than can be said for Ireland.

True, very true. I almost forgot about our dear friend Count Ramirez. Thanks for jarring the old memory banks, one year older as of May 8th of last week  :bouncegiggle:

A little off topic, but Bond is an interesting example of an iconic English character who has been played mostly by non-English actors.

daniel craig - English
pierce brosnan - Irish
timothy dalton - Welsh
roger moore - English
george lazenby - Australian
sean connery - Scottish
ed nelson - American

Of course, this excludes 1966's "Casino Royale," and all the actors who played Bond in that film.
