Title: Did you know...? (Little known movie trivia)
Post by: Dr. Strangelove on April 30, 2011, 06:56:10 PM
In the movie "Dr. Strangelove" Peter Sellers was slated to play 4 roles, in addition to the good doctor, the president and Col.mandrake he was going to play the B 52 bomber pilot, Maj. Kong.

However, try as he might, Sellers just could not to a passable texan accent, or even a decent parody of one, so they made the decision to limit Sellers to the 3 roles he had and pick an actor with a texas accent to play Kong.

Thus, Slim Pickens got to be in the two funniest scenes in movie history: The riding the bomb scene in Dr. Strangelove and the campfire scene in Blazing Saddles.

You think you know some little know movie trivia? Let's see what you got...

Silent film comedian Harold Lloyd was missing the thumb and index finger of his right hand. In his films he wore a prosthesis glove over his mangled hand, making his incredible acrobatic stunts even more remarkable.

The dentist equipment seen in Little Shop of Horrors (1986) is the same seen in Batman (1989) when the doctor is pointing to his medical table.

Dunno if it's little known, but the famous "white cat" in The Godfather was NOT in the script of the film, nor was it in the book the movie is based on.  The cat was just a stray that Marlon Brandon found and befriended on the set and they decided to use it.  Some of the dialogue for that scene had to be redubbed as the cat was purring really loud during several of the takes.

In the movie To Live & Die In L.A. (1985), Willem Dafoe's character was making real counterfeit bills in the middle of the desert. The crew brought in a real life counterfeiter and they obtained all the necessary equipment needed. At one point there were helicopters scoping out the area and the actors and crew feared they would be arrested. After filming was over, some of the fake bills actually made it into circulation within the US.

Leslie Banks received injuries during WWI that left his face partially scarred and paralysed. In his acting career he would use this injury to good effect, by showing the unblemished side of his face when playing comedy or romance (GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS) and the scarred, paralysed side of his face when playing drama or tragedy (THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME).

More or less known movie trivia:

Debbie Gibson was supposed to star in New Line's Skirts in 1989, a movie created especially for her, but the project fell apart.

In 1985 Warner was playing with the idea of doing a movie called Crazy from the Heat starring David Lee Roth but alas, the project fell apart.

Warner/Morgan Creek didn't approve of William Friedkin's ideas for Exorcist III which Friedkin was in talk to direct. Friedkin wanted to bring back Linda Blair as a single parent with twins, with one of them possessed and killing people.

Everyone knows of Lugosi's drug addiction to moriphine..he made it public. What is not known is that Peter Lorre had a terrible addiction to moriphine. It only endears me to Peter Lorre more- he didnt let it get in the way of his art. Much like Bela-he worked till the end. A proud man-regardless of his personal demons.

Francis Ford Coppola used no CGI or elaborate post production effects in BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. All the amazing effects were all done 'in camera' or with simple editing techniques.

In the film A Series of Unfortunate Events, there's a scene where Count Olaf (played by Jim Carrey) is first being introduce he says, "Wait, give me that line again." and re-reacts to learning about the death of the children's parents.  That line is not in the script, that's actually Jim Carrey wanted to redo his reaction, but it fit so much with the sleazy nature of the character they left it in.

In The Hunt For Red October, when doing the scenes on the Russian submarine, Sean Connery would act like he was in a really lousy mood before filming began.  This created an uneasy atmosphere among his fellow actors - all part of Connery's plan to create a more realistic on-screen attitude of fearful respect among the sub's crew towards their commander.

The only know time the meticulous Alfred Hitchcock ever improvised on a movie set was in THE BIRDS. When Jessica Tandy protested there was no way her character would explore the farmer's seemingly empty house for no reason Hitchcock had the prop man break the tea cups hanging on the wall, giver her an excuse to suspect something was wrong.

Part of that movie, I believe near the beginning, where they show frozen mountains from the ocean, was filmed just outside the town I live in. I've been in that area literally hundreds of times, having drove a fishing boat for two summers, and working in the shipyard for another 6-1/2 years.

Dustin Hoffman was originally cast as the title character in the 1980 musical, Popeye, with Lily Tomlin as Olive Oyl. Hoffman left the film over a disagreement with writer Jules Feiffer. In overcoming the setback, producer Robert Evans assured Paramount that a big name was not needed, and suggested even the comedian on the cover of Newsweek the previous week could handle the part. That was Robin Williams. Tomlin left following Hoffman's departure, and negotiations were underway with Gilda Radner before director Robert Altman hired Shelley Duvall.

Roger Corman wanted Francis Ford Coppola to make The Godfather as a black action movie.

Also, the producers wanted to update The Godfather to a 1970s setting and keep it to about a 90 minute running time.  Coppola fought these decisions and won (good thing).

Fortunately producer Jerry Gross had him some artistic vision and made the film anyways:

JAWS 3D started life as a remake of THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. This idea was nixed in favor of an AIRPLANE!-like spoof supposedly titled JAWS 3/HUMANS 0 (http://awcgfilmlog.blogspot.com/2006/02/jaws-3people-0-script-review.html).

Of course, what we eventually got was Dennis Quaid running around Sea World and some very silly 3-D shark effects.

I love Clint.

Here's an interesting bit of film trivia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_of_the_Secret_Service) Wikipedia is spotlighting on their homepage today:

Ronald Reagan considered CODE OF THE SECRET SERVICE (1939) as "the worst film I ever made. "Never has an egg of such dimensions been laid." Reagan like to tell the story of how a theater ticket taker told him he should be ashamed of himself for making such a terrible movie.

However, little Jerry Parr saw it many times and thought it was just dandy. The film even inspired him to later join the Secret Service.

It was Parr who was credited in saving Reagan's life during the 1981 assasination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr.

On a personal note: I've seen Reagan's 'Brass Bancroft' films and they are pretty rotten.

Universal was giving John Hughes a hard time because his movie Sixteen Candles wasn't the box office smash they had hoped for. Hughes had just finished work on The Breakfast Club, and was about to film Weird Science.
To show his discomfort with Universal John Hughes wore shirts with a Paramount logo while shooting Weird Science.

Ye-es, though I do not know how well known or not this trivia is.

John Wayne was originally offered the role of Marshal Matt Dillon in the TV show "Gunsmoke," but turned it down and instead suggested James Arness, who he had worked with in several previous films, and who accepted the part.

Thus, giving James Arness his best known role, but that meant the role was not offered to William Conrad who had voiced the role of Marshal Matt Dillon in the radio series "Gunsmoke." But do not feel too bad for Mr. Conrad, as he had his own his hit TV series in "Cannon." Which was a spinoff from "Barnaby Jones," which starred . . .

Buddy Ebsen who had his own TV hit with "Davy Crockett" on "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color." But before that, Ebsen was the original Tinman in "The Wizard of Oz," but he had to withdraw, because he was allergic to the silver makeup used. So Jack Haley stepped in to play the part. And Jack Haley . . .

Almost everything in Hollywood is connected to something or somebody else.

When the wardrobe department was looking for a coat for Frank Morgan (Professor Marvel / The Wizard), they decided they wanted one that looked like it had once been elegant but had since "gone to seed". They visited a second-hand store and purchased an entire rack of coats, from which Morgan, the head of the wardrobe department, and director Victor Fleming chose one they felt gave off the perfect appearance of "shabby gentility". One day, while he was on set in the coat, Morgan idly turned out one of the pockets and discovered a label indicating that the coat had been made for L. Frank Baum. Mary Mayer, a unit publicist for the film, contacted the tailor and Baum's widow, who both verified that the coat had at one time been owned by the author of the original "Wizard of Oz" books. After the filming was completed, the coat was presented to Mrs. Baum.

Clerks.- Apparently it cost more to produce the soundtrack to the movie than it cost to produce the entire film.

Ghostbusters- John Candy was originally intended to portray Louis Tully.  He was unable to commit, and Rick Moranis took over.  Harold Ramis initially had no interest in portraying Egon.  The role was offered to Chevy Chase, who turned it down.  They also considered Christopher Lloyd and Jeff Goldblum for the role.  Also, Winston Zeddemore was to be portrayed by Eddie Murphy, and the role was much bigger.  But, Eddie had started filming Beverly Hills Cop, and was unable to do both.  And, an odd side story to Ghostbusters: When the cartoon was getting produced, Ernie Hudson had auditioned to voice Winston on the show.  The producers had informed him that he wasn't right for it, even though he portrayed it in the movie.  They gave it to Arsenio Hall.

Beetlejuice- Tim Burton's original choice for the role of Beetlejuice was Sammy Davis Jr.  However, producers talked him into using Michael Keaton instead.  And, apparently, there's an unproduced sequel script floating around entitled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.

The 2010 movie Tooth Fairy, starring Dwayne Johnson, was originally written for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the early 90s, under the title "Sweet Tooth." Arnold opted to make The Last Action Hero instead.
