New guidelines issued on March 31 discourage plot lines that contain elements of "fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots, absurd techniques, even propagating feudal superstitions, fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons, and a lack of positive thinking."

I've always hated shows that display a lack of positive thinking.

No fantasy, absurd techniques, or bizarre plots?

Man, even Sesame Street couldn't make the cut there.

So what exactly is left that they can do?

So they basically can't watch anything.  I feel bad for the citizens.

So this only effects television, right?  'Cause I'm pretty sure most every Chinese film I'm aware of would fit one of those descriptions.

Well,  no reruns of The Time Tunnel for the Chinese anymore.....

On a somewhat related story, I once spoke to Gary Conway and Don Matheson of Land Of The Giants fame at an East Coast Chiller 'con. They had an interesting story to tell:

According to both of them, years back, Land Of The Giants was taken off the air in Romania and mainland Eastern Europe back in the 80's or 90's, because the then-Communist government had a problem with the show's theme of "the little people against the State."

Seems that anything that gives any sort of hope, or deemed as an alternate form of revolt or sabotage against the State (as these shows I mentioned would be in these cases) is a no-no in Red Land.  :bluesad:

Hmm... does that also include Land of the Lost and the Back to the Future movies to play on TV?  Damn China, you never cease to surprise me.

Wondering if they got clued in that sometimes writers use science fiction to covertly criticize modern day trends and thinking and they figured, "Ah, crap!  Someone could be condemning Communism and we wouldn't even know it!  Ah, hell, let's just ban ALL creative TV!"  Or something similar.

Read this in the news today:

China has ordered TV stations across the country not to air any detective shows, spy thrillers or dramas about time-travel for the next three months.

All have been ordered off-air with immediate effect.

An official at China's state TV regulator confirmed to the BBC that the verbal order had been made.

China's Communist Party is preparing to mark 90 years since its founding and the authorities want TV stations to air programmes praising the party instead.

Well there goes Law & Order and any James Bond film.  I wonder if they are trying to aim to make a George Orwell type of civilization?

Oriental TV in Shanghai told the BBC it was postponing its spy drama Qing Mang, due to air in 10 days time. It will be replaced by a comedy about mothers and their daughters-in-law.

Who doesn't want to watch that ???!!!  :teddyr:
