Title: May 21st
Post by: Flick James on May 06, 2011, 09:44:02 AM
There's some Christian organization here in Arizona putting up billboards everywhere saying that May 21st is Judgement Day. They seem very, very convince of this. I'm wondering if this is a local phenomenon, or if this is happening around the rest of the country.

Once May 21st rolls round and there's no big booming voice from the sky or people being burnt to a crisp because they watch internet porn, all the heretics will simply conjure up a new date.

Not if you do it in a way that's adult and respectful of other's beliefs. But it's a dangerous area and I'm sure Andrew would prefer people not get into religious arguments on his bad movies board.

I know I probably invited it with the topic, I was mainly just curious if this was local or more widespread.

I researched it further are found that there is a guy responsible for it who made the same prediction in 1994, and when it didn't come to pass he said he had miscalculated.

I'll quote The Chuch Lady: How convenient.

I still have somewhere a pamphlet I got years ago, entitled 88 REASONS WHY THE RAPTURE WILL BE IN 1988.
These guys drive me nuts.  Jesus plainly said that "Of that day and hour no man knoweth," and in a different passage
"It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has fixed by his own authority."

Whatever you think of the faith, this isn't Biblical Christianity.

I saw this one actually on yahoo news. The same guy who has predicted May 21st has actually predicted the end of the world three times before and each time was, well, we are still here so a fizzle.

The thing is, his believers from what I understand have spread this word not only across the USA but also internationally and are convincing people even in other countries that the end of the world is scheduled for 8 days from this posting. From a religious standpoint I am always skeptical as a Christian when people say they know when the end of the world is because the same Bible that they use to prove the end time is next Tuesday also says in Mark 13:32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert[e]! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. " So if no-one knows how did this guy figure it out?

May 21st isn't a good time for me either my daughter is (according to the Dr.s) supposed to be born the day after that.

I'll also specify here before people get creeped out by the Bible passage above that I am an American too, which means I respect the rights of others to/or not to practice religion. Which means no tirades are forthcoming towards aetheists from my end.

I'm going to be laughing an awful lot come 6pm tomorrow. Can't wait 'til they try and interview that doomsday dude. Yet one more instance where religious belief will be made to look foolish. It's like aliens landing on earth in thousands of years (when, say humans have ceased to exist), they find a Stephen King novel (probably "The Stand") and a VHS of Star Wars and take every word/image as fact because there's no-one around to say any different and they are experiencing a world new and unfamiliar. Before you know it they'll be building T-16's and trying to gain superiority over eachother with stories of "Captain Trips".

A feller by the name of Harold Camping...this is his organization:
http://www.familyradio.com/

He tried once in 94 or so, and got it wrong.  Her eis his logic (from wikipedia):

Camping teaches that the world will end May 21 2011[17] using the following reasoning:
According to Camping, the number five equals "atonement", the number ten equals "completeness", and the number seventeen equals "heaven".
Christ is said to have hung on the cross on April 1, 33 AD. The time between April 1, 33 AD and April 1, 2011 is 1,978 years.
If 1,978 is multiplied by 365.2422 days (the number of days in a solar year, not to be confused with the lunar year), the result is 722,449.
The time between April 1 and May 21 is 51 days.
51 added to 722,449 is 722,500.
(5 x 10 x 17)2 or (atonement x completeness x heaven)2 also equals 722,500

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Radio

What I wanna know...will Japan end first, or has it already?

Where are all the Terminators from the future?
Where are all the Tvirus zombies?
Fist of the North Star prophecy?
Madmax begins?

Nothing so far...

Just the standard here in New Jersey. Smog, crime... stuff like that.

Then again... it's not 6pm.

Speaking as a fellow "Jesus Freak", I've prayed for you a time or two myself, Ronnie.
But I don't really want to date you!
But still . . . you won't find a more devoted friend than a Christian who truly loves you.  And who knows?  It just might happen that finding something greater than yourself to believe in could be totally awesome.
And if not, you can still spend some time in the company of a pleasant person who seems to like you.

Go with it, dude!

It was buried their by ancient druid yeti who were desendents of an alien race. If you decipher the scratches on the bricks (those are Atlantean hyroglyphics) it will tell you that the world will end on Friday the 13th,1999.

I have one serious problem with Camping. It's hard to take his predictions of doom seriously when I can't read his name without thinking of sleeping in a tent and toasting marshmallows over a fire.

I suppose even if I did take him seriously, I'd still make that association on some level.

When the rapture comes, what happens to all the astronauts?

When the rapture comes, what happens to all the astronauts?

They'll get eaten by the man from Mars, on his way to eat cars, bars and guitars.

Camping just keeps crying wolf.

Last I saw he now claims all "decisions" were made May 21st and the actual destruction will occur on October 21st (If he had predicted this on Halloween that would have been so much cooler, think how fun Halloween could be if you don't actually expect a Nov 1st to occur). So according to Camping (anyone hungry for 'Smores) anything you do between May and October will not change your fate at all.  :buggedout:

Consider this reality as you get high on crack, rob a bank, and shove a dead prostitute in the trunk of your car. It's totally cool now because you're already either "saved" or "screwed"

I vote Rev. Powell for funniest joke in-thread yet.

All credit and karma to my 13 year old nephew for forwarding it to me.

My 11 year old nephew, who actually sent me the video, understandably doesn't want my 13 year old nephew to get the credit for this.

You're on the badmovies board, which surely means in the fundamentalist's book you're totally getting left behind

Hey everybody!

Remember this? Remember how Harold Camping said that May 21st was going to be the rapture and the end of the world? After May 21st passed, Mr. Camping said he made a mistake and that the actual date is October 21st.

TODAY!

Get ready folks. Today is the rapture. He simply made a mistake before. This time it's for real.

Still here... nothing happened much today.  Prehaps we are all in sort of personal hell like in the Twilight Zone episode (though I don't seem to be getting everything I want)?

He's so confident that he didn't give his staff the day off. The guy is a complete joke.
