RARE PHOTOS: Marilyn in Training
In the fall of 1948, Marilyn Monroe had just a few roles in box office flops on her resume -- but LIFE photographer J. R. Eyerman apparently saw enough of a glimmer in the 22-year-old starlet to follow her through the showbiz training that promised to make her big. The incredible -- and seldom seen -- images in this gallery are the first a LIFE photographer ever took of Monroe, though the magazine did not publish them at the time. (In fact, she wouldn't show up in LIFE's pages until October 1949, along with seven other then-unfamiliar Hollywood "girls"). But now, in celebration of what would have been Monroe's 85th birthday (June 1, 2011), LIFE.com presents these rare gems, restored to their original glory and showing early-career Monroe in the dance, acting, and voice classes that helped make her an icon for the ages...

She was a true beauty if there ever was one

Never gotten the appeal of Marilyn Monroe.  Plastic surgery, heavy makeup, fake smile, no talent.

There was no plastic surgery.  :bluesad:

And from some of the other pics she did (as well as a video that allegedly identifies her  as a young topless girl fooling around for the camera)   it's safe to say nothing else was false about her either....

For the sake of the video, it's featured on an old tape called Hollywood Sex Scandals that has, among other people, Sly Stallone, Barbara Streisand, Chuck Connors and some guy that made it big in soap operas (forgot his name though.)

I wish she had made some better movies. She is really on another level as far as looks and sexuality though. bigger and better than the rest.

I've looked at MARILYN movies and thought to myself (she's fat...)  She was an ideal for her time, and I realize she was never "fat", but she was curvaceous in ways that are not so well regarded as they once were.  Do I dare say "out of fashion"?     For her figure alone, MARILYN will be remembered.  We're all grown up here and can see where ideals may converge whether to our taste or not.
MARILYN made a few movies I can watch, and I do like BUS STOP, but think THE MISFITS and SOME LIKE IT HOT are great movies and for those two alone she'd be well remembered.

Well, it's a given that in today's world, women like Marilyn would be told to go home and lose about 30 or 40 pounds, but to me that just ruins the natural beauty yesterday's women so greatly exuded.  And unlike some women of today (but not all), the props were real, if you get my drift

She's roughly a size 8 for most of her career, size 10 at the heaviest.

I agree that Some Like it Hot and The Misfits were great pictures.  She also did very well in minor bit roles in other films - one where she played a girl working in a cannery, and got like 5th billing - can't remember title.  She gets a lot of bad press, but I think she tried to do the best she could.  She took what she did seriously & I am told that scenes she did for The Actors' Studio were as good as anything Montgomery Clift or Brando were doing.  She just got type-cast, which is death to creativity - though I certainly wouldn't mind!

And she's paired with KEITH ANDES... that's a great film, but not because of MARILYN, but because of BARBARA STANWYCK, ROBERT RYAN, and J. CARROLL NAISH... PAUL DOUGLAS is also quite good in his part.  It's one of my favorites: CLASH BY NIGHT (1952).

J. Carroll Naish...I seem to remember one of his final roles (if not his final one) was in Al Adamson's Dracula vs. Frankenstein. Naish was the last of the Frankensteins and the unforgettable Zandor Vorkov was Dracula
