Post any new upcoming dvd news.

Scorpion Releasing proudly presents Katarina’s Nightmare Theater, a new line of horror DVDs hosted by actress, and former WWE and now TNA star, Katarina Leigh Waters, as she introduces a series of cult films, many of them for the first time on DVD!  See the bewitching Katarina introduce such horror classics as THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW, FINAL EXAM, THE INCUBUS, some of them in new high definition film transfers with new extras!

Also, for the first time on DVD such films as the 80′s horror favorite HUMONGOUS, THE CARPENTER starring Wings Hauser (VICE SQUAD), THE HUMAN EXPERIMENTS starring Linda Haynes, AMERICAN NIGHTMARE with Michael Ironside, THE DEVIL WITHIN HER starring Joan Collins, the twin-terrors of THE MARK OF CAIN, and NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT starring genre greats Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing!    Each DVD will have a play with or without Katarina’s intros and closing segments and some will have audio commentaries with the filmmakers moderated by Katarina. All the DVD sleeves will feature a reversible cover. The first wave will be released in September, just in time for Halloween and new DVDs coming each month through March!

“I am having really great fun hosting these movies, and coming up with skits for the introduction…  plus I love that I get to meet these filmmakers and talk to them about their creative process on the audio commentaries…  it’s inspiring!  I hope you enjoy watching the DVD’s, as much as I enjoy working on them!” -Katarina Leigh Waters

All to be released on 6/28

Bloody Birthday

Quote
Get ready for the rarely seen slasher classic from the ‘80s that may also be the most disturbing ‘killer kids’ movies in grindhouse history: Three babies are simultaneously born in the same hospital at the peak of a full solar eclipse. Ten years later, these adorable youngsters suddenly begin a kiddie killing spree of stranglings, shootings, stabbings, beatings and beyond. Can the town’s grown-ups stop these pint-sized serial killers before their blood-soaked birthday bash? K.C. Martel (E.T., Growing Pains), Joe Penny (Jake And The Fat Man), Michael Dudikoff (American Ninja), screen legends Susan Strasberg and José Ferrer, and MTV vixen Julie Brown – whose nude bedroom dance remains a landmark of celebrity skin – star in this still-controversial shocker from director Ed Hunt (The Brain, Diary Of A Sinner), now featuring an all-new HD transfer from the original vault elements.

Nightmares

Quote
From John Lamond, the infamous producer/director of Felicity, Australia After Dark and ABC Of Love And Sex comes this depraved mélange of sex, murder and psychotic mayhem. Jenny Neumann of Hell Night and Mistress Of The Apes fame stars as a frigid young theater actress traumatized by her mother’s horrific death years earlier. But when a series of brutal stabbings rocks her latest production, the drama queen prone to bloody hallucinations fears that she herself may be the killer. Are all actresses genuinely insane or is the stage set for a shocking final twist? Max Phipps (The Road Warrior) and Gary Sweet (The Chronicle Of Narnia: Voyage Of The Dawn Trader) co-star in the graphic ‘Ozploitation’ giallo also known as Stage Fright, now fully restored from the original Australian vault elements.

The Baby

Quote
An A-list director. A jaw-dropping storyline. And depraved depictions of suburban violence, 70s fashions and ‘sick love’. The result remains one of the most disturbing movies in Hollywood history: Anjanette Comer (The Loved One) stars as an idealistic L.A. County social worker who investigates the case of Mrs. Wadsworth (former ‘50s starlet Ruth Roman of Strangers On A Train fame), her two buxom daughters, and son ‘Baby’, a mentally-disabled man who sleeps in a crib, eats in a high-chair, crawls, bawls and wears diapers. But what secrets of unnatural attachment – and sexual obsession – are all of these women hiding? Marianna Hill (The Godfather Part II) and Michael Pataki (Grave Of The Vampire) co-star in this psychotic stunner from director Ted Post (Magnum Force, Beneath The Planet Of The Apes), now fully restored from the original film negative for the first time ever.

Mr. Skin and Panik House Entertainment Present the Unholy Trinity of “Women in Prison” Films! CHAINED HEAT, widely regarded as the greatest “women-in-prison” film of all time, finally comes to DVD in a totally uncut, re-mastered version. This triple-pack of “boobs behind bars” mid-80s exploitation classics will only be in print for a limited time.  CHAINED HEAT – Linda Blair (The Exorcist) stars as Carol Henderson, a woman sentenced to 18 months in federal prison after accidentally killing a man.  With the perverted warden (John Vernon, Animal House) seducing the inmates and two rival gangs fighting a race war, Carol struggles to survive her remaining days in the sleazy slammer.  Also stars cult film favorites Sybil Danning, Tamara Dobson and Stella Stevens. Newly re-mastered in anamorphic widescreen and presented totally uncut for the first time in North America!

RED HEAT – Linda Blair heads back to prison as American tourist Christine Carlson, a woman wrongly sentenced to three years in a brutal East German penitentiary after being forced to admit to false charges of espionage.  Tormented by the evil prisoner Sofia (Sylvia Kristel, Emmanuelle), Christine must fight for her life as her fiancée tries to rescue her from the sadistic hell behind bars.  Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen.

JUNGLE WARRIORS – A group of gorgeous models flies to a South American country to scout locations for a photo session.  When their plane is shot down, the models are imprisoned and subjected to horrible torture and rape by an evil drug lord.  In an effort to escape, the girls grab some firepower, take revenge, and try to shoot their way to freedom! Stars Sybil Danning and John Vernon.  Presented in Anamorphic Widescreen.

I've been hoping for a "Damnation Alley" DVD for a long time as well.  Man-eating cockroaches!  Plus the Landmasters are just awesome.  Most of the problems you would encounter after the apocalypse would be much less fearsome if you have a Landmaster.

There are some other good finds in there.  "Humongous" is one I remember from when I was a teenager and would watch every bad movie at the rental store where mom took a job.  The sword and sorcery pack is full of great stuff.  Everybody should see those, though "Deathstalker 2" pains me.  I just watched "Barbarian Queen" the other day.  Seeing Lana Clarkson defeat a man with only her kegel muscles...what a woman.

Image Entertainment has both BASKET CASE and THE BLOOD TRILOGY, consisting of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ BLOOD FEAST, TWO THOUSAND MANIACS! and THE GORE GORE GIRLS, coming on the hi-def format September 27. The latter ties in with Image’s DVD release the same day of Henenlotter’s documentary HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS: THE GODFATHER OF GORE. The impetus to get his debut feature about Duane Bradley and his monstrous basket-dwelling brother Belial onto Blu-ray was Henenlotter’s discovery of the original negatives a couple of years back. “I’ve had the negative the whole time, but it was mislabeled, so I didn’t know I had it,” he tells us. It really has been lost all these years; otherwise, I would have gone with it on the first DVD!

On the Godzilla side of things it would seem two movies are finally getting released over here. Godzilla vs. Megalon and Destroy All Monsters!

http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/2011/06/07/its-official-media-blasters-licenses-destroy-all-monsters-and-godzilla-vs-megalon-for-dvd-and-blu-ray/

Now Destroy All Monsters is loads of fun and I know Megalon tends to be one of the most hated of all the films. Still, I have a guilty pleasure of that one and I am a completest.

And think kind of renews my hopes that someday 1985 and Biollante will get DVD releases in the U.S.

Ed Wood, was an American screenwriter, director, producer, actor, author, and editor, who often performed many of these functions simultaneously. In the 1950s, Wood made a number of cheap genre films (and attempted a number of failed TV pilots), now enjoyed for their technical errors, unsophisticated special effects, large amounts of ill-fitting stock footage, idiosyncratic dialogue, eccentric casts and outlandish plot elements, although his flair for showmanship gave his projects at least a modicum of critical success.

Wood's popularity waned soon after his biggest "name" star, Bela Lugosi, died. He was able to salvage a saleable feature from Lugosi's last moments on film, but his career declined thereafter. Toward the end of his life in the 1970s, Wood made semi-pornographic movies and wrote pulp crime, horror, and sex novels. His real infamy began two years after his death, when he was awarded a Golden Turkey Award as The Worst Director of All Time. This is quite a set of Ed Wood films.  The first (and only review - right now) does note that it is missing both "Glen or Glenda" and "Night of the Ghouls."  That's unfortunate, because both are pretty big omissions of his works.  There are quite a few of the films that he wrote, but did not direct, in the set.  I haven't seen a lot of those, so it's interesting for that batch - though I'm worried that they will not be as much "Ed Wood Bad" as boring and tepid bad.

The quality of these sets is mediocre, but there are a whole lot of films in there!  I own quite a few of the notables already ("Hundra" among them), but have been waiting to upgrade from VHS to DVD on others (such as "R.O.T.O.R.").

Of warning, "Eyes Behind the Stars" is mind-melting in its confusing badness.

and then their is the other movies that aren't really bad movies *Cough*lordoftheringsextendedStarwarsBluray*Cough*

OH WOW!  I've been wanting to see that film for a while, and to be able to get it on Blu-ray will be awesome!  Don't worry, it'll be on DVD, too.

This looks interesting, too:

"In this poetic and atmospheric horror fable, set in a village in war-torn medieval Japan, a malevolent spirit has been ripping out the throats of itinerant samurai. When a military hero is sent to dispatch the unseen force, he finds that he must struggle with his own personal demons as well."

Comes out Oct. 18.

Quote
Airing on ABC primetime from 1974-1982 and seen by millions, Barney Miller is a situation comedy television series set in a NYC police station in Greenwich Village. Captain Barney Miller is the kind of cop we'd all like to meet. He somehow manages to maintain order over a group of inner-city detectives who gamble for a hobby, get hit on by anything in skirts, go to renaissance philosophy conventions for fun, and would really prefer to be writing. These colorful characters worked together to make one of the funniest sitcoms ever and is cemented in classic TV status. Stars: Hal Linden, Abe Vigoda, Jack Soo, Steve Landesberg, Ron Glass, and Max Gail.

Sony released the first season in 2004, and followed up in 2008-09 with the second and third seasons. But since then they've been quiet, and fans have gotten to thinking that they would never see the rest of the show's 8-season run on DVD. But now Shout! Factory has picked up the license for this legendary sitcom, and is jumping into it whole-hog with an October 25th release of Barney Miller - The Complete Series! You'll get every episode on 25 discs, with guest stars that include the likes of Jeffery Tambor, Ray Sharkey, Marla Gibbs, Adam Arkin, Charlotte Rae, Linda Lavin, Doris Roberts, Dave Madden, Christopher Lloyd, Joe Regalbuto and Meshach Taylor.

The Emmy- and Golden-Globe-winning show will also be accompanied on DVD by "tons" of newly-produced and never-before-seen bonus features, including a 32-page Commemorative Book, New Interviews with the Cast (Hal Linden, Max Gail, Abe Vigoda), the Original Unaired Pilot, Writers Commentary on Select Episodes, and - whoa! - the First Season of the spin-off show Fish starring Abe Vigoda (note that the spin-off lasted for two seasons and 35 episodes; the 13-episode first season was more closely tied to Barney Miller since Vigoda's "Detective Phil Fish" regularly appeared in BOTH shows during the episodes that aired in 1977; Fish retired from the NYPD at the beginning of the Fall '77 season for each of these sitcoms).

Shout! is timing this title's street date to be on store shelves during the holiday gift-giving season, and the package art (shown below) clearly will appeal to fans. If you already own the individual season sets for the first three broadcast years, then you'll be wondering if SF plans to put out separate packages for Seasons 5 through 8. While the studio hasn't officially said, our experience is that they almost certainly will, and have done so in the past whenever they've started with these "complete season" packages (after all, the episodes are already produced, so there's no reason not to capitalize on that!). If you want the big set, though, then you'll be happy to know that it clocks in at $159.99 SRP (that's like $20 per Barney Miller season, or just $6.40 per DVD!)...and retailers such as Amazon will certainly discount the set from there. Hard to find fault with that! Or this amazing box to hold it all:

I'm going to need to start a special October movie savings account.

Mill Creek will be releasing Gamera 3: The Revenge of Iris on Blu-ray around October, along with a special 2-pack that included their previous Gamera: Guardian of the Universe/Gamera: Attack of Legion and special slipcover.

There's a typo on the trilogy image at the moment, it says "Gurdian" instead of "Guardian".  Hope they fix it!

Mill Creek will also be releasing the Daimajin films on Blu-ray this year!

Oh and Mill Creek said those covers are just promotional and aren't the final product.

And the date is September 28th I believe.

Aside from the typo I think they make great covers.  I'm glad Mill Creek has released decent Blu-rays so far.  I guess as long as they get ahold of good masters they do alright.  Something that I think they should do is put some of their mega-packs of 50+ movies on Blu-ray discs, but still have them in standard definition.  Basically they could put at least 10-20 movies on a single disc, but they'd have to slap a big disclaimer on the package stating that they aren't high-def.  I'd buy 'em just to save space.

Yeah the cover is decent I think. Also the picture of Gamera is from Guardian of the Universe and not Revenge of Iris.

That idea with the Blu-rays could work, but i'm sure lowest common denomentor shoppers would ruin it for everyone. It would be cool having 50 movies on about 5 discs though.

Still no release date or package or anything, but apparently Criterion is going to release the original Godzilla movie "Gojira" on Blu-ray and DVD sometime in the future. Heck they haven't even said anything on the matter, they just posted this picture on their Facebook page
(http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/317512_10150777940325565_24856820564_20861333_6548913_n.jpg)
The Japanese on that film canister says "Dupe Posi(tive): GODZILLA. Reel 2 of 10 Reels. Toho Company, Ltd" by the way.

Gojira has been released before on DVD and Blu-Ray, but if Criterion is doing a completely new restoration i'm defiantly re-buying the movie a 3rd time.

I got pretty excited when I saw that yesterday.  The Classic Media DVD is nice, but all the reviews I read of the Blu-ray release weren't that great (I'm sure it looks a little better but not enough to upgrade) but if Criterion can do what they've done with a lot of films it ought to be a treat.  I just hope they don't keep us waiting for too long!

EDIT:  Gets even better!  From The Good, the Bad and Godzilla (http://augustragone.blogspot.com/):

Quote
So, Criterion put the call out to film collectors, everywhere, to help locate 35mm elements for GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! Startlingly, within 24 hours...several fans — working together and respecting the anonymity of the source...veritable Rosetta Stone, something far better than a 35mm print has been located: A 35mm Fine-Grain Print!

Basically that's a print that isn't designed to be projected but is used in making duplicate prints for projection.  So aside from a great and restored version of the original film, we should be getting a fantastic looking copy of the US version!
