I've been a watching a lot of '70s Columbo lately. Peter Falk's portrayal was a high-water mark for quality in an era of television that was otherwise filled with garbage (mostly). I was just rewatching a bunch of old Columbo episodes not too long ago, for the first time since they were airing on A&E in the 90s. Greatest detective show ever, due in no small part to Falk's portrayal. It's so entertaining and satisfying to watch that shabby little man, so outwardly clumsy and absent-minded, totally manipulate and outsmart people who think themselves his superiors. Even the ones who see through the bumbling detective act manage to underestimate Columbo. One of the all-time great characters.

Another role where he shined was as one of the cab drivers in IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD.
