Title: Flawed films you enjoy regardless
Post by: Kaseykockroach on July 05, 2011, 12:08:13 AM
What are films you enjoy despite their faults, be it story problems or films you just wouldn't really call your favorites.
High Anxiety (1977): Mel Brooks' last film that isn't painful to watch, even if you obviously have to be a Hitchcock geek to "get" it. If I recall correctly, it also contains the only time a "Psycho" parody was actually funny.
Fritz the Cat (1972):  Rough around the edges, but I like the spirit and satire of the piece, and Jim Tyer's bits of animation are a delight as usual. Despite the fact that it's his most notorious film, Heavy Traffic and Coonskin are far stronger on the whole.
A Day at the Races (1937): The last tolerable Marx Brothers film on the whole (though the rest of the films from hereon at least have their highlights).
Small Soldiers (1998): It shows that the film suffered from production problems (similar to what happened with Joe Dante's next film, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, only not as grating). It's overall one of Joe's weaker films, but there are several wonderful moments (like the scene where the little brother picks up one the soldiers and starts to explain how he'll die). I agree with Jonathan Rosenbaum though, it's more fun to watch than Saving Private Ryan at least.

You didn't like History of the World Part 1?

I love that movie.

That came out after High Anxiety?
My bad, I got the release dates screwed up. ^^;
Mostly not a fan of Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It, Life Sucks, etc.

I've said before that I am a huge fan of Spielberg. I love that guy, and I think he's a filmmaker who literally creates new languages of cinema with every film he creates.

So I loved War of the Worlds. In that movie, Spielberg took all the experimental stuff he did in Saving Private Ryan and made a goofy movie about an alien invasion. Seeing that on the big screen was a revelation for me.

That being said, the story and plot in that movie is awful. Not just awful, almost awful personified. But I still love that movie. Did you see the death rays? The death rays were incredible.

I guess this would qualify as a guilty pleasure, but even though it's all just window-dressing and eye candy, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the 2004 version of Phantom of the Opera.

Yeah, I know it's not faithful to the book and in many spots, not faithful to the actual musical, but the visuals WERE very lush and involving, and the singing wasn't perfect but it was engaging.  Just my 2 cents...

That's one of my favorite Mel Brooks movies. Highly underrated. Hell, I saw it when I was 11 years old, had not seen any Hitchcock movies other than The Birds, and I still thought it was funny.

As I have heard, of his films directed by Mel Brooks, "High Anxiety" is one of his least favorites or maybe even his least favorite, because it's not "Mel Brooksian" (Is that a word?) enough for him. On the other hand, of his films directed by him, that is one of the few that I like or even can stand to watch, as Mel Brooks style of comedy just does not appeal to me.

As for other directors' films, I cannot think of one film that I have not see that is not flawed in some way or the other. Even "Citizen Kane," which I think is about as perfect a film I have ever seen is flawed by Dorothy Comingore's performance as Susan Alexander Kane, which is probably why of all the actors in the film, she had one of the shortest careers in acting.

I just watched this film yesterday, but the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the rings is pretty fun despite some major problems.

DONNIE DARKO - a film I actually kind of love because of its flaws.  The confusing-as-hell plot can inspire hours of debate.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

Sure the movie had lots of 'WTF did I just see?', how, what? But still... I enjoyed it.

I'm quite partial to Kingdom of Heaven it's flawed no doubt but ive watched it at least 5 times and have taken something new from it each time.

Baise-Moi. After hearing how controversial it was at the time, it's one I had to seek out, and I wasn't TOTALLY disappointed, in fact, I quite enjoyed it - sex scenes notwithstanding. The movie is uneven in spots, but I thought it was pretty decent overall - it's what Thelma And Louise SHOULD have been.

I HATE that film.

Those two characters were some of the most unlikeable I've ever witnessed.
Just two vile, messed up women.

hehe, i've heard more than a few people really hating it, but i don't get it. yeah, it's unbelievably nasty and offensive, but....i dunno, can you really defend the movie? i think it depends on what you're looking for and i got EXACTLY what i was looking for: a very, very unpleasent watch. plus when the girls get raped at the beginning and one of them says something like "you should expect that - you're a girl", i mean whoa....

Exactly.
Two girls getting raped, one of them is screaming, crying and sobbing as you'd expect and its a tough watch.
The other does nothing.
She's an emotionless shell from start to finish.

She's so cold and unlikeable that it almost defies belief. He empty headed friend isn't much better

The film seems to go out of its way to be cruel. There's no plot, no character arc, no unique ideas. I mean, there's barley any plot either.
Its just an excuse to be unpleasant.

Grrrr.....

I'm getting angry just thinking bout this film again.

If it wasn't for the graphic sex, this film would be long since forgotten and rightly so.

Christine (1983)

The film isn't really scary.
A killer car is an idea that can only be pushed so far before it becomes kinda stupid.

But its so watchable. Again I think this might be because it has few characters. Arnie, Dennis and Christine. There are a few other characters but really it's those three.

And I'm not a petrol head but that car is gorgeous and film had a great classic soundtrack too.

Simple story, but effective.

(I'm reading the book right now and it's fab)

Death Race 2000, The Descent, Charlies Angels...you know, the more I think about it, the more I realize that most films I enjoy are flawed. Oh well.

Just about all the movies I like are heavily flawed.  I guess that's kinda why I'm here.

"Wizards!" I like the art style, I love the premise, but I think it would have benefited greatly from rounding out some of the characters just a little more to make them 3-dimensional rather than generally 2-dimensional (especially some of the protagonists). But I'd still watch it again for the art and the fact that, although it is a kid's film, it doesn't try to talk down to them and doesn't present the flawed moral that the good guys can't ever stray even a little from a strict moral code.

Friday the 13th part VII: admittedly dumb movie with a silly premise, but man is it fun to watch. And I'm pretty sure that's exactly what the creators were aiming for, and I think they succeeded in that respect. Your mileage may vary, of course.
