Title: July @ 366 Weird Movies: TROLLHUNTER, IMMORTAL (AD VITAM), BLACK MOON, more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on July 08, 2011, 04:21:06 PM
Another month, another weird slate to cover...

JAM (UK, TV, 2000) (http://366weirdmovies.com/tv-capsule-jam-uk-2000): "Some folks will have already decided that 'Jam' is not for them, and I can’t really blame them.  Part of me died when I typed the words 'he's plumbed the baby’s corpse into the heating system.'"--KD

THE TREE OF LIFE (2011 (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-the-tree-of-life-2011)): "Any movie that tells the story of a suburban Texas boy’s troubled relationship with his father—but uses a dramatic encounter between dinosaurs to illustrate its main point—is at least making a nod towards the bizarre."

TRAILERS FROM HELL!, VOL. 2 (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-trailers-from-hell-vol-2-2011-with-the-little-shop-of-horrors): "Other commentaries you may want to check out are writer Larry (Ed Wood) Karaszewski’s take on Polanski‘s The Tenant, Lloyd Kaufman discussing his own Terror Firmer in his typical carnival barker style (he provides the collection’s only trailer with graphic violence and nudity), and Mick Garris on Flesh Gordon, the only-in-the-70s porn parody mixing silly sex with some remarkable Ray Harryhausen-inspired stop-motion effects (leading Garris to the odd observation, 'the great god Porno and the penisaurus really [stand] out')."

HE WHO GETS SLAPPED (1924) (http://366weirdmovies.com/victor-sjostroms-he-who-gets-slapped-1924-starring-lon-chaney): "...a tale of degradation, humiliation, pathos, and sacrifice."--AE

Title: Re: July @ 366 Weird Movies: LUNACY, DEAD LEAVES, a contest and a poll!
Post by: Rev. Powell on July 15, 2011, 07:49:36 PM
LUNACY [SILENI] (2005) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-lunacy-sileni-2005): "The Marquis hammers nails into a crucifix while devil-worshiping partiers eat chocolate cake shaped like a cross in front of a chained woman; he paints crosses on the backs of naked women and sprinkles communion wafers on them as he rants at God and dares Him to strike him dead. Like Ken Russell, Svankmajer has a way of ritualizing depravity too make it look elegant, erotic and enticing."

DEAD LEAVES (2004) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-dead-leaves-2004):"...moves so fast and makes so little sense that it’s almost the equivalent of putting an ultraviolent manga in a high-speed blender and trying to read it while the pieces swirl around."

REVIEW WRITING CONTEST #4: WIN A COPY OF TRAILERS FROM HELL VOL. 2 (WITH THE LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS) (http://366weirdmovies.com/review-writing-contest-4-win-a-copy-of-trailers-from-hell-vol-2): Click for details!

READERS CHOICE POLL #2: PICK TWO (MORE) FILMS TO GO ON THE LIST OF THE 366 BEST WEIRD MOVIES OF ALL TIME (http://366weirdmovies.com/readers-choice-poll-2): Rubber (2010) or Trash Humpers (2009)?  Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) or Butcher Boy (1995)? They Saved Hitler's Brain (1963) or Flooding With Love for the Kid (2010)? These are some tough calls, come help us out!

THE GREAT DICTATOR (CRITERION COLLECTION) (1940) (http://366weirdmovies.com/the-great-dictator-1940-criterion-collection): "Chaplin stated that when, and if, his famous character the Tramp ever spoke, it would be as a farewell.  He found a reason for the Tramp to break his silence in the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich..."-AE

I am a big svankmajer fan and was lucky enough to see lunacy at the Melbourne international film festival in a packed crowd a few years ago. Man I loved it and my friend and I were pretty much the only people laughing. Don't know why because that film screams for more audience participating.

The intro by svankmajer himself was hilarious as well. God I love surrealist film!

As for dead leaves I did love the insanity of it. It's a good movie to watch If you want to have a seizure.

Most fans seem to think LUNACY is Svankmajer's weakest film... I think I agree, but that's only because the rest of them are so great!  I'd still rate LUNACY a 3.5/5, which is pretty impressive for somebody's worst film.

DEAD LEAVES is an experience... I can't say I really liked it but I'm glad I saw it.

Yeah Lunacy certainly is one of his more mainstream films, but I must admit I did enjoy it alot.  Still, the weakest of a bunch of wacko crazy films is still nuts by normal standards.

Title: Re: July @ 366 Weird Movies: A BOY AND HIS DOG, TETSUO remake, COWBOY BEBEOP
Post by: Rev. Powell on July 22, 2011, 08:42:49 PM
In any given week, we're going to cover the craziest movies you never saw...

COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE (2001) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-cowboy-bebop-the-movie-2001-blu-ray): "The city they explore (the capital of Mars) is packed with crowds preparing for a big Halloween festival, but our protagonists wander alone through the throngs with the weight of the world on their shoulders, adding occasional philosophical and mystical mutterings.  Well, all except for Ed, who seems content to hop around dressed as a pumpkin."-AK

TETSUO: THE BULLET MAN (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-tetsuo-the-bullet-man-2009): "...whereas the original’s thoroughgoing weirdness earned it comparisons to Eraserhead, this remake plays more like a particularly incoherent episode of 'The Incredible Hulk.'"

A BOY AND HIS DOG (1975) (http://366weirdmovies.com/92-a-boy-and-his-dog-1975): Certified weird! "...gives us two weird worlds for the price of one: a scorched earth surface roamed by sarcastic, hyper-intelligent telepathic dogs, and an underground society of impotent totalitarian mimes."

THE PENALTY (1920) (http://366weirdmovies.com/wallace-worsleys-the-penalty-1920-starring-lon-chaney): "He lusts after Allen’s legs and wants them for himself.  It would be horrific, except that Allen is so suburban, so unimaginative, so insensitive, so belittling of his fiancee’s artistic ambitions, and so downright annoying that you almost find yourself rooting for the Blizzard’s plan to succeed."--AE

Title: Re: July @ 366 Weird Movies: TROLLHUNTER, IMMORTAL (AD VITAM), BLACK MOON, more!

Closing out July with

TROLLHUNTER (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-trollhunter-trolljegeren-2010): "The story and characters are interesting enough to keep the momentum going, and the gorgeous Scandinavian scenery and multiple gruesome troll bouts are entertaining to the eye."-AK

IMMORTAL (AD VITAM) (2004) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-immortal-ad-vitam-2004): "All of the elements never fall into place—just who was John, anyway?—but I’m guessing if you’re intrigued by the idea of an amoral bird-headed deity stalking the streets of a moody computer-generated metropolis, the trippy sci-fi experience is going to outweigh your need for closure on a few loose plot ends."

BLACK MOON (1975) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-black-moon-1975): "Black Moon is a movie with some great individual visions—breastfeeding the unicorn, the concerto for nude children—not a completely immersive and enchanting experience."

THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT (1965) (http://366weirdmovies.com/the-saragossa-manuscript-1965-existential-potpourri):  "Rationalism is, to quote Heidegger, delightfully out the door, making for an incomparable, existential potpourri of idiosyncratic weirdness."-AE
