Title: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: diamondwaspvenom on July 25, 2011, 07:29:52 PM I saw the thread with the debate between the original and remake blob movies and was inspired to make this poll. Which do you prefer?
Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: JaseSF on July 25, 2011, 07:33:54 PM I'm probably in the minority but I prefer the 1951 film. To me, it just has more likable, compelling characters that feel more real and fleshed out than the characters in the 1982 film. That said, I also really enjoy the 82 film as well...great gory thrills and chills there too.
Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Jack Slater on July 25, 2011, 07:35:49 PM John Carpenter's The Thing, for me. Although, I must say there both do very different things with the same material. And I do really like the original.

I also like the original more than the remake. I see the remake as attempting to be more shocking and gory and it doesn't really scare me. I do say it is a closer adaption to the original story and it has the awesomeness of Keith David in it. The original worked more me since it wasn't just a big kill almost everyone, the atmosphere was better to me, I liked the characters, and I enjoyed the quick dialogue between the characters. The remake is good and all, but just like the original better. Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: akiratubo on July 25, 2011, 07:44:59 PM The John Carpenter version. The 50s one isn't even in contention. Hell, it's barely even worth watching.
Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Nightowl on July 25, 2011, 07:51:28 PM John Carpenter's The Thing. As a whole, I like it more. The special effects,actors,storyline...everything is near perfect. Where The Thing From Another World isn't, even though it is fun to watch, but the film does drag a bit by the end.

Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: RCMerchant on July 25, 2011, 08:08:53 PM Ok...on the BLOB-I enjoyed the 50's version better.
But on the THING....Carpenters. It's just so over the top and dam scary! Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Pilgermann on July 25, 2011, 08:29:38 PM Voted for Carpenter's. I like the original film, but the '82 version still creeps me out. It has an atmosphere of dread that I love.
Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Doggett on July 25, 2011, 09:54:04 PM The Suspence factor keeps you guessing in the re-make so that wins it for me.
The first viewing is never shredding. Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Skull on July 25, 2011, 10:13:36 PM Outch... No Horror Express?
John Carpenter's version is Superior version since it's an upgrade to the original story, which can also be said about the Fly (remake). Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: 66Crush on August 09, 2011, 11:05:32 PM Carpenter's version is one of my favorite films ever. The "head" monster still holds up! I haven't seen the original since I was a kid, but I would love to see it again.
Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Ted C on August 11, 2011, 09:09:38 AM I appreciate John Carpenter's for being true to the short story "Who Goes There?"
I dislike the 1951 for depicting scientists as a bunch of careless, self-important morons. But they're both still fun to watch. Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Jack on August 11, 2011, 09:46:13 AM That's a close one, but I'll have to give it to Carpenter's version. I love the original - the banter between the characters is clever and has a realistic ring to it. Like the radio reporter who's always making a big stink about everything, but he's actually a swell guy underneath all the bluster. Or the romance between the lead guy and his girlfriend - every bit of the dialogue was witty and believable.
But Carpenter's version is great too, with a gritty realism to it, very good characters, and of course the monster is just slightly more fearsome :teddyr: Title: Re: Original Vs Remake: The Thing From Another World vs John Carpenter's The Thing Post by: Flick James on August 11, 2011, 02:18:24 PM I like them both for different reasons, but if I have to choose I vote Carpenter, partly because I just really like what he was doing around that time in general.
