Title: Beauty and the Beast... A puzzling question.
Post by: Skull on July 31, 2011, 07:18:45 AM
This is based from the Disney's cartoon.

How old is everybody?

In the story; the rose starts to wilt when the Beast is becoming 21, in one of the songs it was explained that they were cursed for 10 years. So the Beast as the Prince was a 11 year old kid before the curse?

Though it seems their age was frozen... based upon Chip's character and the picture of the prince in his destroyed room, therefore I'm not actually sure how 21 plays a role to the story; unless they're age is not frozen. If that is so then Chip is actually 16 years old and his mother the tea pot is a total jerk!

It's a great movie and a story that my little kid loves but following it can be silly. (especially since your watching it more then 10 times)

Perhaps the help was frozen in time.  Though I always thought Ms. Potts was way too old to be chip's mother.

Now that's interesting since Mrs. Potts was voiced by ANGELA LANSBURY who was 66 years old when BEAUTY AND THE BEAST was produced (1991).  Certainly Jessica Fletcher was too old to have an adolescent son (and that's not knocking LANSBURY's talent).  ANGELA LANSBURY appears in THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (1945) and though she was only 20, to me she seemed kind of old then... BUT, ANGELA LANSBURY also played ELVIS PRESLEY's mother in BLUE HAWAII (1961 ~ ELVIS was  26 then; ANGELA was 36).  She also played LAURENCE HARVEY's mother in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962)... ANGELA was not quite 3 years older!!!
:bouncegiggle:  :teddyr:   She's always been too old.

Don't be silly, they're all cups and clocks and junk, they don't have ages!   :twirl:

These are my kind of threads.  I suffer through countless kids shows and movies with my kids and I find myself contemplating the life of Curious George and Diego on a daily basis.

Personally, I can rarely stand any of the post-Walt's death films.
I like Little Mermaid. But I thought the Beauty and the Beast was an odious, ugly perversion of the original fairy tale; I found Aladdin obnoxious and self-indulgent; and The Lion King was pretentious and badly written.
Oh, um, in my opinion. :)

From what I understand he had a very high standard on who could be in his movies.

It seemed then they were writing Beauty and the Beast that Disney Studios was trying keep the beast and belle at a closer age. So it seemed like thier age was frozen in time; for at least 10 years. Although I believe in the fairy tale it was much longer (maybe almost 100 Years or so) it does seem very odd how a kingdom can dissapear from 10 years.

I could accept the age frozen in time... the problem becomes when the rose starts to wilt before his 21st birthday... therefore their age isnt frozen and it confuses me. The intent (I believe) is that we can see the urgency that the castle staff needs to force the relationship/romance between beast and belle... although the urgency isnt nessary since the staff has been transformed into cups, clocks, candlesticks, etc for almost 10 years ~ you'd would think any girl enter the castle will be rushed into a forced romance.

I have not read the book but I did seen the 1940's french movie.

You're going to obsess yourself into a coma with this Beauty and the Beast age thing!  I get it, it doesn't make sense, get over it!  Is it spring, or winter?  It's snowing and there's flowers and trees growing!  Ya know what? It's MAGIC!!!! Magical magic has suspended reality and mixed up the seasons and the aging process.

Here's the real puzzling question that magic cannot answer: Why does Gaston want Belle when he can have 3 hot blonde triplets that worship him?

You know what's better than three hot blondes?  Three hot blondes AND a hot brunette.
