Title: FatFreddysCat Reviews Movies 'n' Music 'n' Stuff
Post by: FatFreddysCat on August 04, 2011, 09:31:26 PM
I've been checking out some of the blogs & reviews posted by various members here and wow, we've got some talented critics!   So I figured I should show y'all some of my deranged cinematic ramblings as well.

I've been posting at HubPages.com for a couple of months now, it's basically a site for frustrated wanna-be writers (i.e. people like me) to post articles about any old thing they feel like writin' about. My passions are metal music and movies, but lately I've been doing more stuff about movies (it's been a slow year for me with buying CDs.)

So anyway, I recently started a series of articles I call "IT CAME FROM THE BARGAIN BIN" in which I celebrate cheap movies and how cheaply I come across them. Please check'em out and feel free to comment. I hope you dig.

It Came From the Bargain Bin #1: "The Morgue" (2008) and "Legend of the Bog" (2007)
http://fatfreddyscat.hubpages.com/hub/It-Came-From-the-Bargain-Bin-DVDs-on-a-Budget

It Came From the Bargain Bin #2: "Friday the 13th" (2009)
http://fatfreddyscat.hubpages.com/hub/It-Came-From-the-Bargain-Bin-FRIDAY-THE-13th-2009

It Came From the Bargain Bin#3: "Maniac Cop" (1988)
http://fatfreddyscat.hubpages.com/hub/It-Came-From-the-Bargain-Bin-MANIAC-COP-1988

It Came From the Bargain Bin #4: "City of the Walking Dead" (1980)
http://fatfreddyscat.hubpages.com/hub/It-Came-From-the-Bargain-Bin-CITY-OF-THE-WALKING-DEAD-1980

Hope you like'em. If you want to see some of my other non-movie related rambling, the link to my profile page is in my sig.

Cool, man. I plan on doing some more of those "Retro Metal Rants" in the future, just haven't decided on a deserving band/album yet. Appreciated!

Haven't had time to watch any movies this week, thus no new movie reviews on my Hub... however I've dusted off some CD reviews I did for my friends' e-zine a while back and tweaked/updated/edited them and added those to my Hub, for anyone who might be interested... thanx for lookin'...

Ratt's INFESTATION (2010)
http://fatfreddyscat.hubpages.com/hub/Ratt-INFESTATION-Loud-ProudRoadrunner-2010

Totally agree with you on all points about the Ratt CD. It was a HUGE surprise at how good it sounded. Of all the 80s bands to come back with a new record, I would have expected Ratt's to be the worst. But no, hell no! I also thought they chose the wrong single (bad video too) and I thought the ballad was the weakest track. They should have gone totally balls out with the track-list and replaced it with "Scatter" which featured on the Japanese edition. I played Infestation to death when it came out and I'd have to say it ranks as one of their best releases, no question.

Right on brother! I was totally blown away at how good that record was, especially since I hadn't been much of a fan for about 20 years prior and therefore I had ZERO expectations for it before its release...

I have had zero time to watch films for the past week or so (I really need to get back into that groove) but in the meantime I've written two new non-movie Hubs if anyone's interested.

First is a "Retro Metal Review" about Sepultura's 1991 classic, ARISE:
http://fatfreddyscat.hubpages.com/hub/Random-Retro-Metal-Review-Sepultura-ARISE-Roadrunner-1991

The other is the story of my strange week in a rented car -- the oddly shaped but yet somehow endearing Nissan Cube.

More movie fun soon, folks, I promise.

Still haven't been watching any movies worth writing about (though October is coming up, that means lots of Halloween horror flicks, woohoo, so that will change soon!) ... but I did whip up another "Retro Metal Review" entry this week about the ever-controversial first album by Ice-T's Body Count.

Return with me now to 1992, when a rapper formed a heavy metal band and managed to p**s off the entire universe with one song!!

I found it in a thrift store in my town this past weekend for a dollar (along with the original "Dirty Harry" -- woo hoo!), hadn't seen "China" before but I'd seen a few of Cynthia Rothrock's other flicks in years past so I figured it was worth risking a buck. It was pretty bad, but in a good kinda way. I've seen better but Lord knows I've seen lots worse....

Phew! That was pretty lengthy dude.

I got the album dirt cheap of Amazon, and that was about a week after it had be released. It's a good album on it's own merit. It does not sound like a GNR record, so having it put out under that band name hurt it in my opinion. Yes, individual songs don't jump out demading repeated listens, but the record as one whole listening experience is excellent.

Yeah, I guess it was a little lengthy but I swear I wasn't intending it to be so indepth or long winded, I just sat down and started typing while listening to the CD and it just kinda wrote itself. :D

The Babylon A.D. debut record is superb hard rock! They should have been massive along with the likes of Lillian Axe too. Their live album is simply amazing as well, even though it doesn't contain too many tracks from the first album. 2Caught Up In The Crossfire" and "Back In Babylon" are totally kick-ass tracks!

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I love Dokken (don't mind the new band and material either), but Don can be a bit of a prick and egomaniac at times. Not heard anyone have anything good to say about him. Plus, he can't sing live anymore - at all....I will give the new album a go (regardless of the terrible cover) though.

Great Hub entry FFC!

Thanx man! I've heard the same about Don's voice being shot to hell outside of the studio (there are some clips on YouTube of Dokken playing the "M3" festival in Maryland a week or so ago and good LORD he sounds godawful) but like you, I'm a fanboy so I'll still buy the new record.

...and if that really was Don Dokken commenting on my Hub, someone needs to tell him to lay off the Caps Lock. Haha!

Dang, it's been over two weeks since my last Hub!! Well, here's a new one. A co-worker and I were looking at one of those "Bad Album Covers" web sites today and that inspired my newest rant, "Hilariously Bad Hard Rock/Metal Album Covers"

(By the way, I'm open to doing more installments of this one so if you have any suggestions, feel free to say so in the comment area!)

New music article by yours truly. Y'all been keeping track of the drama in the Queensryche camp?

In a nutshell, longtime vocalist Geoff Tate has been fired and replaced, and Tate is now starting his own version of the band, causing much legal squabbling over the Queensryche brand name.

...and hey, over the weekend I also got an e-mail from the web master for Deliverance (the Christian metal band); the band saw the piece I wrote about them and were so tickled by it that they are gonna put a link to it on their official site sometime this week. Neat-O.

Nice review, always liked this album, some great heavy riffs on there. Lost my cassette copy years ago lol. Didn't realise it charted so badly in US

Also totally agree with Whitfield Crane sounding like a cross between Bon Scott and ozzy on that new song !

Cool man, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, the album tanked in the US. I always tell my friends that when it was released here it sold about a dozen copies - one to me, and the rest to the band's family and friends. Haha.

...and yeah, he totally sounds like Bon/Ozzy on that new track doesn't he? I gotta pick up that new EP sometime soon.

Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi. I bet he was really chuffed to know he was a guest in his own band. don't think I've ever heard that album, the track In For The Kill you posted sounds pretty solid. it actually sounds quite Iron Maiden-y, especially the drums and the guitar solo (imo)

^^ Yep, "In For the Kill" is a great track, not really Sabbath sounding at all (which, of course, was the whole idea since it was supposed to be Tony's solo album)... I hadn't heard the album since it was a new release until this past week, when I came across it randomly in the five dollar bin at Best Buy. I liked it a lot better this time than I did years ago.
Thanx for checking out my ramble!

My kids found this craptacular on Netflix last weekend and of course wanted to watch it since we're "cat people." Total mistake! By the halfway point even they were laughing at the horrible acting, continuity errors, and other misfires. Turns out this flick was made by a guy who usually does softcore dude porn, but he makes these quickie talking-animal "family comedies" on the side. That explains a skin crawlingly awkward scene with two teenage boys who seemed like they were in an awful hurry to get shirtless and jump into the pool together. :teddyr:

Nice review. Overkill are one of those bands who for some reason passed me by even when I was mainly into thrash - which probably sounds impossible, not sure how that happened, lol. I liked the few tracks I heard by them though. Heard some Municipal waste stuff before and it's good but pretty unoriginal like you said. I agree with you about eddie trunk as well, I find him irritating too!

^^ Thanx Zombie#1...  always nice to meet another Eddie Trunk hater! :D

Anywhoo, here's my first new one in a while: a long overdue new installment of my "Forgotten Hard Rock Albums" series, focusing on the Die Happy.

Note: the "Die Happy" in this piece was a short lived Christian metal band from California, it's NOT the alternative rock band from Germany... though if Google Search sends some of their fans to my page by mistake, I won't mind the extra traffic. Haha

A new "Forgotten Hard Rock Albums" entry is up, featuring a long lost New York band whose album is due to be reissued in early 2015.

New one:
1983 was a weird year for James Bond fans. We had two (!) new 007 films in the same year - Roger Moore's Octopu$$y and Sean Connery's "unofficial" Never Say Never Again - the result of a legal battle that had gone on for nearly 25 years.

I actually posted this one about a year ago at a different writing site that I was trying out called "Bubblews," but they suck (long story that I won't get into now)... so I took all my stuff down from there and I'm trying to re-work/re-edit/tweak some of those pieces into HubPage entries. I was gonna do a run-down of all the movies that SyFy premiered during their 2015 "Sharknado Week" whoop de doo but all of them pretty much sucked except for the not-at-alll-shark-related "LAVALANTULA," so I decided to focus on that one instead.

First new entry in a while:

This week in 1978, the four members of KISS each released solo albums simultaneously. Their management was obviously banking on a massive, four-times-bigger-than-usual sales coup but it ended up backfiring big time, and was the beginning of the end for the original lineup.

Nice review.

Boy, that brings back memories.  I wore the grooves out of Ace's and Paul's solo albums.  And yes, Ace's was by far the best.  Never even bought Peter's; I think I bought Gene's just to have it but barely listened to it.

I agree with Ulthar; nice review.  It has great detail.  I love people who talk music and history and know what they're talking about.  I have never been a fan of KISS, though there are a couple of albums I like; the solo albums are not counted among those.  I'm sure everyone would agree ACE FREHLEY's is the only one worth bothering with.

This is wonderfully dreadful:

New one. I've recently gotten hooked on so-called "Euro-Spy" movies, i.e. cheap low budget 1960s spy flicks made to cash in on the James Bond craze, so I wrote up a quick crash-course entry.

Back in the early 80s it seemed like "Treasure of the Four Crowns" got played on HBO almost as much as "The Beastmaster."

I hadn't seen this cheapo Spanish "Raiders of the Lost Ark" wanna-bee since I was in junior high, aaaaand... yep, it was just as awful as I remembered!

I just got a congratulatory e-mail from HubPages telling me that my articles there cracked the 200,000 page view mark over this past weekend. Dang!

...granted, some web pages/blogs get that many hits in a week or a month, and it took me five and a half years, but still... dang! For a clueless amateur like me, that's a lot of eyeballs!

So hey, I just wanted to say "thanks" to everyone for continuing to put up with my lame-ass attempts at self promotion 'round here and for even occasionally checking out my stuff, even if you're only doing it out of pity (haha). You all rule!

Onward and upward to 300K!

I haven't seen the "black metal" movie "Lords Of Chaos" yet, but this documentary which examines the same events is available via Amazon Prime.

New one!
I was very surprised to discover that this notorious "Jaws" ripoff from Italy, which got sued out of existence by Universal Pictures back in the day, is now viewable on Amazon Prime. Of course, I had to check it out...

Anybody remember "Passenger 57?" If you remade that on a budget of twenty five bucks and put a Marilyn Manson look-alike in the Wesley Snipes role, you'd have "Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal."

Remember Class of 1999? Homicidal robo-teachers, ultra-violence, and Pam Grier!

New one...  this Italian "Aliens/Terminator" mashup was a perfect candidate for my "Great Bad Movies" series...

First new entry in a couple of weeks:

So hey, it only took me three decades to accept the Sammy Hagar era of Van Halen. :D
