Title: August @ 366 Weird Movies: 3-IRON, PROXIMA, ZAZIE DANS LE METRO, more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on August 05, 2011, 01:39:15 PM
BLOOD SABBATH (1972) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-blood-sabbath-1972): "In the course of the movie we discover that topless go-go dancing is a much bigger part of Satanism than anyone realized, and being sacrificed at a black mass turns out to be surprisingly similar to getting a lap dance."

DEEP RED (1975) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-deep-red-profondo-rosso-1975): "...the Expressionist flowers that bloom in Suspiria grow from the blood spilled in Deep Red."

TRASH HUMPERS (2009) (http://366weirdmovies.com/93-trash-humpers-2009): Certified Weird! (by popular demand). "In the course of their wanderings they meet a boy in a Sunday suit whom they teach to slip razor blades into apples, abuse pancake-making fake Siamese twins, consort with overweight hookers who serenade them with a chorus of 'Silent Night,' and throw firecrackers while a man dressed in a French maid’s costume dedicates a poem to them."

THE MAN WHO LAUGHS (1928) (http://366weirdmovies.com/paul-lenis-the-man-who-laughs-1928): "...may be the most genuinely authentic German Expressionist film made in the good old U.S.A."--AE

And don't forget there's still time to enter our review contest (http://366weirdmovies.com/review-writing-contest-4-win-a-copy-of-trailers-from-hell-vol-2)... with no entries yet and only a week to go, your chance of winning the "Trailers from Hell Vol. II" DVD are pretty darn good.

Title: Re: August @ 366 Weird Movies: DEAD RINGERS, THE TINGLER, THE BIG BANG, more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on August 19, 2011, 12:39:14 PM
Hmm... missed last week, so there are a ton of updates to mention.

THE BIG BANG (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-the-big-bang-2011): "Any movie that includes an invulnerable seven-foot Russian boxer, three different hair colors on Sam Elliot’s head, a horny waitress with quantum physics tattoos, a search for the origins of the universe, and a Snoop Dogg cameo is, in my book, worth at least a look."

DEAD RINGERS (1988) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-dead-ringers-1988): "When the plot synopsis contains the words 'twin gynecologists,' you know you’ll be traveling into territory off the beaten path."

THE FUTURE (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-the-future-2011): "The best offbeat technique is employed towards the end, when Jason literally stops time so he can sort out his feelings about Sophie’s infidelity, and ends up in a sad conversation with the moon."-AK

PAUL LENI'S THE CAT AND THE CANARY (1927) (http://366weirdmovies.com/paul-lenis-cat-and-the-canary-1927): "...a compact (not a shot is wasted) standout in the 'old dark house' genre.  Who needs dialogue when the visual story telling is so richly expressed?"-AE

PAUL LENI'S WAXWORKS (1924) (http://366weirdmovies.com/paul-lenis-waxworks-1924): "Leni's breakthrough film is no mere carbon copy of Caligari.  Indeed, Waxworks is something of a yardstick for what an anthology film should be."-AE

PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER (2006) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-perfume-the-story-of-a-murderer-2006): "By the time a drop of perfume falls on a Paris street in the last shot, there’s little for the viewer to do but gape at Tykwer’s mad bravado."-AS

RACE WAR: THE REMAKE (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/366-underground-race-war-the-remake-2011): "...if your taste runs towards Tromaesque spectacle and you have an ample supply of beer and bongloads to get you through the running time, then this will definitely make your weekend!"-LRH

THE TINGLER (1959) (http://366weirdmovies.com/reader-recommendation-the-tingler-1959): Winner of our 4th reader review contest! "...in an attempt to better understand the terrified mind, Price takes LSD, thereby providing the American cinema with its first ever acid trip, and Price with a histrionic acting showcase."-SW

Title: Re: August @ 366 Weird Movies: THE WALL, PASSION PLAY, HANDS OF ORLAC, more!
Post by: Rev. Powell on August 26, 2011, 02:45:34 PM
More, more, more!

THE HANDS OF ORLAC (1924) (http://366weirdmovies.com/robert-wienes-the-hands-of-orlac-1924): "[Conrad Veidt's] Orlac is almost the text book essence of Weimar Cinema (even if it was an Austrian production) and justifies the actor’s claim that “I never got Caligari out of my system.”  The hallucinatory fever billows in the veins of the actor’s brow.."-AE

PINK FLOYD THE WALL (1982) (http://366weirdmovies.com/94-pink-floyd-the-wall-1982): Officially Certified Weird!  "The live action is the meat of the film and the animation is the pudding, but how can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?"-EG

PASSION PLAY (2010) (http://366weirdmovies.com/capsule-passion-play-2010): "Passion Play‘s target audience seems to be creepy old guys who like to daydream that they’d have a shot at Megan Fox if only she had some sort of easily overlooked physical deformity.  So when I, as a creepy older guy who wouldn’t kick Ms. Fox out of bed if she sprouted wings, tell you that this movie sucks, it should carry extra weight."

FRANKIE IN BLUNDERLAND (2011) (http://366weirdmovies.com/366-underground-frankie-in-blunderland-2011): "Despite everything, Frankie still believes that things can only get better, even after two possible murders, and the kidnapping of his wife, which leads him to wander the Blunderland landscape (AKA L.A.) looking for her and encountering various other misfits and oddkins such as a hobo prophet (John Karyus), a Mormon missionary who may actually be a space alien ( John Christopher Morton), lesbian robots, oracle spiders (Debbie Rochon), and just plain slackers..."-RLH

[ur=http://366weirdmovies.com/reader-recommendation-3-iron-bin-jip-2004l]3-IRON (2004)[/url]: Reader recommendation! "...a love story in which the lovers communicate their joy, grief, fear, trepidation, trust, and insecurities – believably – without ever exchanging dialogue."

PROXIMA (2007) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-proxima-2007): "...the film is a series of left turns, with detours into amnesia, astral projection, alien technology, and false imprisonment.  By the time Tony’s drifting through space in what looks like a magical refrigerator, it’s unclear exactly how each twist is related, beyond a loose sense that something epic is going on."--AS

ZAZIE DANS LE METRO (1960) (http://366weirdmovies.com/list-candidate-zazie-dans-le-metro-1960): "A minor character casually kills a waiter by firing a woman’s high-heeled shoe at him, and a parrot transforms into a dog when it’s sprayed with seltzer water; something of this sort happens in just about every detail-packed frame of the film."

THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO (2006) (http://366weirdmovies.com/m22-the-mozart-operas-at-salzburg-2006-le-nozze-de-figaro): "The strangest license taken with the libretto is an out-of-nowhere additional character, Cherubino’s angelic double, who sets the plot in motion, irritating, manipulating and advancing the dizzying range of agendas that unfold like chaotic lines in a diagram (which is literally displayed on a wall at the end of the third act)."--AE
