Title: so I gave up soda
Post by: bob on August 07, 2011, 12:02:01 AM
in hopes of lowering my blood sugar level and getting my teeth healthier I have given up soda and replaced the need for it with vitamin water, which gives you the same boost that some soda does and it's much healthier

Soda is a yucky thing...bad for your teeth and your waistline.  I enjoy the occasional pop but prefer water.

I made a big switch from diet soda to Vitamin Water Zero a few months ago.  I still drink diet soda occasionally, but mostly I try to avoid it.

About 70% of my fluid intake is Dr. Pepper . . . is that a problem?

So I guess you no longer have a Coke problem, then?

Ahh Dr. Pepper. I used to drink about 3 big bottles a day, and I even took a bath in it once because I loved it so much. Couldn't bear to drink it now even though it is still head and shoulders above coca cola.

I've been trying to stop drinking soda. I think my mild caffine addiction is putting that off, but this topic will provide inspiration!

I haven't completely given it up but for the most part I have. One thing that helps I find is buying seltzer water and putting some juice or flavored syrup in it to make my own sodas. It tastes good and depending on what you use will be way healthier for you than regular soda.

I gave up regular consumption of soda years ago. I do enjoy one once or twice a month, however. And it's nice because it's a treat due to the infrequency of it. My fluid intake, in order of volume, tends to follow:

1) Water
2) Coffee
3) Adult beverages
                            > About a tie
4) Juices

Good job Bob, like AHD said, "Soda is poison."  I switched from soda to Vitamin Water when I was diagnosed with diabetes a few years ago. Vitamin Water is usually flavored with crystalline fructose, which is just another form of sugar. VM isn't as bad as soda, but it's not really a healthy drink either. I used to check my blood sugar after drinkiing it, and while it didn't spike my blood sugar the way soda did, it still boosted it up there pretty good.  I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer , or act like a know-it-all, or tell you not to drink it, but if you're really interested in controlling your blood sugar then I figured you might want to know. Nowadays I drink it only on occassion.

But seriously, good job on dropping soda. It's one of the best health decisions a person can make.

Hammock Rider is right, Vitamin water is really not that much better for you then soda. It has over 100 calories a bottle and has almost as much sugar as a coke does.

I'd reccomend you try some sugar free flavored water, which can taste pretty good.

Vitamin Water Zero has . . . wait for it . . . ZERO calories.  But it contains vitamins and antioxidants.  I sometimes drink it instead of regular water when I'm working out.

Nothing feels better than cold, fizzy soda going down my throat.  No beer, occasional ice water.. but Coke, RC and Dr. Pepper are my favorite imbibables.

I really need to lower the soda.  I did switch to Energy Drinks like Red Bull and Monster.  Just as bad but I don't like coffee and they give me energy.  Meanwhile, I'm sitting here with a beer.

So I guess you no longer have a Coke problem, then?
Ah-hem. :bluesad:  And I mean that.

Soda is poison for the most part but so is alcohol. Caffeine is terrible for you period. Water (clean water) is the best thing you can drink plain and simple. Different types of juice (apple, V8 fusion, health break mixtures) I do enjoy as well. I also drink Lacteeze milk.

it appears that I have to find a new soda substite, after a bit of research it appears that the level of insulin in the vitamin water and has been running wild on me, I'll just leave it at that, and resulted to very irregular sleeping patterns in a related note

keeping an eye out for 0 calorie vitamin water

If you really want to be healthy, drinking just water (nothing in it, excepting negligible things like a dash of lemon) is the way to go.

Juices are not so great either, for the most part.  I had a label-reading apotheosis once -- I told my wife that Hawaiian Punch had fewer calories in it than the Fred Meyer apple juice does.  (it does, by the way.)  That floored her.  :)

Not that either of 'em are good for you.

At work, I drink nothing but water -- I keep a cup of it full and cold all day and I probably drink six or eight of those during a typical day, maybe ten of them.  But at home I mix in a can of pop most days.  :P  That's my only serious food vice -- I like simple carbohydrates.  No alcohol, no particular caffeine problem, no tobacco... but I do like carbs.  Fortunately I like to run and swim too.

I can almost live on sodas as I don't drink hard liquor (a beer once in a while, nothing more) but energy drinks and mineral water are rarities for me. Tap / faucet water in South Africa is safe to drink so why buy expensive water?  :drink:

I drink maybe 8 cans a day of caffeine free, sugar free Mountain Dew.  I can't drink regular pop, the sugar just coats my mouth and it tastes gross for hours afterwards.

I drink way too much of it. Not that healthy but I figure we live once, enjoy it.

I have to admit to enjoying a rare occasional caffeine free diet cola.

I ended buying Propel Zero. It has zero calories in it. Here's to hoping it works without unexpected side effects.  :drink:

As one who just finished his 3rd Diet Mountain Dew, I agree with you..it's always great when you have the first, but it wanes a bit when you get to the 3rd 4th or 5th..Diet Dew is great, tastes dang near the real stuff, and with that great green glow to it too!

I drink whatever's available, usually. Ive been trying the sugar free flavored seltzer waters, which are pretty good and cheap to buy. Also, Ive been drinking iced tea, the storebought kind, which isnt much better at all than soda but somehow makes me feel less guilty.

One thing I have tried, which does work for me, is the homeade tea-bag iced teas, which you can control the amount of sweetness, using honey or sugar substitutes like stevia. Also, you can use different types of tea, like green tea (which has a ton of health benefits) or chamomile (which tastes awesome and has no caffiene, though probably something you should drink at night, as it can knock you out).

I almost never drink soda.
About once every 2 months.

My dayjob is a chemist and I'm fully aware of how bad soda is for me. That being said dichloromethane is bad for me too and I exceed my exposure limits almost daily. Between the two the dichlo will probably kill me first so I drink up on the pop (yes, I call it pop, thats because I'm a hoosier).

If you want to give up soda, try drinking MOXIE.  It may be the worst soft drink known to man.

You know what I like about soda? I don't drink it very often, but because of that, they taste so damn good when I do. I drank a Coke yesterday for the first time in about a month. It tasted so good, I look forward to next month's Coke.
