Title: What Horror Movies That You Love Still Haven't Been Released on DVD?
Post by: SaintMort on August 11, 2011, 08:56:13 PM
Growing up in the 80s/90s I was able to catch the tail-end of the mom & pop retail store hey-days. Since DVD came around almost a decade ago I've been eagerly awaiting some of my favorite titles to come out on DVD. There's still a decent handful that have never came. I'm curious what some of yours are?

Mine are:
Alligator 2: The New Mutation
Basket Case 3
The Brain
Incredible Melting Man
Bad Channels (although this is available on DVD it's only through a Full Moon Box set package)
Arena
The Last Shark (never release in the US but my friend had a bootleg VHS tape)
It Came From Hollywood (based on copyrights this one will probably never come out for money reasons)

The Boogens!
EDIT: I guess it is on DVD, but no extras or anything.

First a word of note to the topic creator:

Basketcase 3 was released, it is out of print now though
Incredible Melting Man will be available through one of the on demand services later this month according to dvddrive-in.com

Now on to my list of dvds I'd like to see

Summer Camp Nightmare
Wacko
Massacre at Central High
The Granny (1995)

and probably about 50 more movies I can't think of off the top of my head.

Junior (slasher from 1984 - not the 90's horror movie or the Schwarzenegger/Devito flick).

Pete Walker's House of The Long Shadows. MGM owns the Cannon Films library so this one must have slipped through the cracks, I think.

House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows - I'm a huge fan of the TV series and would love to see the two movies on DVD.

Quatermass and the Pit - It's on DVD, but all I can find are really expensive used copies, like $45 used.  Oh well, I recorded it from TV onto a DVD one night, so I'm good.

I have an EXCELLENT quality DVD-R of THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN.

Here are some I would like to see:

* WILLARD (original)
* BEN
* ASSIGNMENT TERROR
* And I also vote for the two previosuly mentioned DARK SHADOWS movies

The first thing that comes to mind, just off the top of my head, is Doctor Butcher M.D. I know Zombie Holocaust is on DVD, and have a copy, but I would like to have a good DVD copy of the Doctor Butcher edit with it's corny intro, plus it moves along a little at the beginning as they trimmed some of the city scenes off that just dragged.

Now I said good copy. I do have a copy on a double-feature DVD which is just basically a VHS source transfer.

Yeah.  It would have been cool if they put both versions on the same DVD.  I have HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB on DVD and it actually includes THREE different edits!  Same with PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID.

I own Alligator 2: The New Mutation on DVD. It was included with Alligator and released in the UK by Anchor Bay.
I also own the excellent German DVD of The Incredible Melting Man which includes a pretty impressive 16:9 widescreen transfer and a full screen version.
There are several European DVD releases of The Last Shark with a beautiful 16:9 widescreen print.

That said, I want Necropolis (1987) on DVD. Not a great film but a guilty pleasure for sure.

I guess I'm a sucker for stop motion since I live in an age of CGI stuff. If not for Sin City, Pixar, and Sky Captain then George Lucas would have ruined CGI forever for me.

So to me there's no such thing as bad claymation because with weaker stop motion it still looks really weird and can be fun.

Bad CGI is just dullsville.

Dead Dudes in the House.

Not really horror movies but they do have their scary moments, Godzilla 1985 and Biollante. Released in every other place but the U.S. on DVD.

I don't really classify it as horror but I used to see it in that category at the vhs store:
Vengeance Is Mine (1974)

Cellar Dweller was a great little movie, wasn't it? And it had Jeffrey Combs to boot.

One of you mentioned the Dark Shadows TV movies earlier too. I loved House Of Dark Shadows: it was the basic series rolled into a 2 hour movie and had some really great sets and a very moody atmosphere.  Night Of Dark Shadows wasn't as good, but still had some good visuals, especially Lara Parker as Angelique (yum yum!)

GOKE, BODYSNATCHER FROM HELL
Abel Ferrara's THE ADDICTION

And a few that aren't favorites (yet) but I'm interested in seeing them:

Roger Vadim's BLOOD AND ROSES
William Castle's THE NIGHT WALKER

That's available as part of THE BELA LUGOSI COLLECTION, not sure if it's sold separately.

The Cat and the Canary (1927)

That's definitely available, both alone and as part of Kino's AMERICAN SILENT HORROR COLLECTION.  It was just reviewed on my site this week (not by me).

Really! I bought bootlegs of most of them but I was hoping for a proper DVD release (I missed the boat on the Alligator Double Feature DVD)... I will have to search them out now!

Good news: Best Buy released a "Death Scream" 5-disc DVD tin in 2009 that includes House of Death (as Death Screams). Bad news: Quote from a "Death Scream Tin" review at my other forum:

Also the movies are indeed censored. 'Death Screams' nudity is blocked out, not sure about the killings, as I just spot checked it.

Thankfully I remembered this comment about this movie being expensive when I saw this movie at my local pawn shop today for $4

Thanks Rev.

Still there are those others I named all of which I rather enjoy...although Universal does seem to be releasing most of these types of films so I'm hopeful we'll see the others eventually too.

THE KEEP

The rumor mill was spinning about two years ago that Michael Mann's The Keep will finally see the light of day on Blu-ray in an exclusive director's cut that he was working on. Nothing so far.

HOMBODIES (1974) -I saw this at the theater on a double bill with PSYCHIC KILLER. Not seen it since. An enjoyable black comedy about a group of old folks who kill the landlords and construction workers trying to tear down their building.
