Title: Splice
Post by: Mr. DS on August 13, 2011, 01:16:34 PM
I just watched this recently and found it enjoyable.  Dren proves to be a wonderful sci-fi creation and watching her evolution was rather entertaining.   I really wish they did more with her intelligence evolution.  It probably would have made for a more thrilling film.  Still, it was worth the watch and probably would get a repeat viewing from me down the line.

SPOILERS

I like the boldness of the film to play up a sympathy side for Dren.  Its a creature with bad habits but yet loveable at times.  I also like the fact the dude gets freaky with her.  Then in turn the creature getting freaky with the girl is an unexpected turn around.  Can I say the fact I hated both the lead characters made those two moments cool for me.

I also laughed at the part where the two slug creatures duel it out and give the front row a blood bath at the press conference.

END SPOILERS

I will say too the CG in this one was believable.

I liked it to a point but it ended up getting a little too dark for my liking.

I prefer the stupid cheesyness of 'Species'.

I liked where they were going with it, I really liked the very ending, but some parts were too silly for a serious minded movie. This is kind of a SPOILER  but when Adrein Brody and Dren were dancing and then he got all hot and bothered by her, I just started laughing. SHE HAD A TAIL, MAN! Her eyes were 6 inches apart! And I think at some point while they were "doing it" she sprouted wings! The concept of those two getting together was alright but I don't think they carried it off very well. Otherwise I liked it.

I thought it was okay, but I can't give it a hearty recommendation.  It's just an updated version of FRANKENSTEIN.  I thought it was too easy for them to conceal Dren at the laboratory . . . I mean, in such a high-tech place, don't they have any security and quality control protocols that would make it very difficult to use equipment and chemicals and stuff for an unapproved experiment?  Also, they used the name "Dren" in a HAPPY DAYS episode 30+ years ago when Joanie fell in love with Potsie and started calling him "Dren" because it was the opposite of "Nerd."  That's all I could think about every time they said "Dren" in this movie.  On the positive side, I thought the special effects were pretty good and the movie never got boring . . . moved along at a nice pace.  I'd give it about 2.5 / 5.

I kind of liked it, and I appreciate a slow build-up, but you know what's going to happen from the first second, which just turned it into a long waiting period.

Oh man, I loved Splice back in the 80s!  It was basically Coca-Cola's answer to Sprite.  They also had orange and cherry Splice.

...............

Oh, wait.  What were we talking about?

His reaction was pretty sudden, but I chalked it up to pheromones. She was hot for him, and seduced him with the help of her chimerical chemistry. He never had a chance.

For me, the tail and the eyes were fairly easy to get used to, and sprouting wings in the middle of sex was almost hot. And, of course, bald chicks rock. It was the legs I couldn't get past. They're just so wrong.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty straightforward story, standard plot, and not particularly well written, but I'd give it points for style, atmosphere and making me care about at least one of the characters. As a Vincenzo Natali film, it's definitely nowhere near as good as Cube.

And for some reason, I like David Hewlett in just about anything I see him in.

I thought it was pretty good, but not precisely original. As The Burgomaster pointed out, it ows too much to "Frankenstein" (the novel, not the films). You can interpret the whole plot of "Frankenstein" as the story of a father (the scientist) who refuses to acknowledge his paternity over the Creature until its too late. Here they actually make the scientists a couple, which makes things more interesting and also more obvious, but instead of exploring this they start moving the plot too fast.

If you like edgy films this one is right down your alley. Think of it as one of those horror films Cronenberg made before he became famous. I just think that for it to be perfect it needed more depth.
