It's been a while since I've seen Krull, but I remember it being a fun  fantasy movie.  It wasn't so afraid to dive into a world of monsters, strange beast, wild imagery and such.

Krull, however, is better in b-movie description then in viewing.  If I told you it had a weak story, horrible acting  and such it would sound like one of the many movies we love on this site.  But when I watched it, I didn't care for most of it.

Krull is also Sci Fi mixed up with other genres. The bad guards of the fortress make the same sound the ones from Flash Gordon 1980 do when they die.

I remember exactly one thing from Kull:  "With this sword, I RULE."

But I remember lots of groovy stuff from Krull:  weird emerald seer, goofy sidekick magician, stop motion spider, weird embryo creatures that burst from the troopers' heads when they die... a teleporting spaceship fortress... a beast, a mentally remote controlled big chromy shuriken...  a prince throwing flame from his hands...  I mean, what's not to like about Krull?!?

Basically the only thing Kull had going for it was hot Tia Carrere.  That might be enough though...

I've never seen Kull, but if it's got that line in it, then it wins.

Tia Carrere may have been super hot when young, but she hasn't aged well.  I just saw her in season two of Warehouse 13 and she has cheekbones like golfballs under taut brown plastic.  Not cool.

I don't think I've seen Kull, but I certainly saw Krull.  I have a DVD somewhere but haven't seen it since the cinema, when I was a kid.  The most I remember, though, was the cool-as-heck Glaive that spun through the air.  I was sad to see it stuck in the beast at the end, unable to be retrieved.

I just went to my collection and dug out the Marvel comic adaptation.  It's cool to have, and includes a multi-page article at the back with a lot of stills from the movie.  And it seems that Columbia Pictures and Alfred Angelo Bridal held a 'Win a Krull Wedding' competition!  Damn!  There's an article about it in the comic, and a number of online articles about it, too.

*How do you explain your wedding photos to friends? Do you keep a VHS copy of the film handy?

*Do you secretly dread every visit from family, sure that this will be time that the little one asks “where were you married, Gramma?” Will you answer, “on the planet Krull?”

I can't stand it...

The correct quote is "By this AXE, I rule!"

Whatever. Just as good. By that line, the movie rules.

Thanks.  My brain had censored most of that movie, and I forgot even the weapon he used.

But seriously, Kull the Conqueror was barely what you could call watchable B movie.  There are many so-bad-it's-good stuff to watch that are, er, better.

Oh man.  Last night curiosity got the better of me and I watched Krull for the first time in many years.

Um... er...

Let's just say that a Krull theme would not be my first choice in weddings!

The movie itself was just watchable, even from an early 80's standpoint.  The direction was okay, the acting was okay, but the effects weren't even up to Star Wars level, and Krull was five years afterward.  The visual effects in particular were just bad.  The whole movie was one try after another, with crustacean-like soldiers, a main villain that looked like a grown up Xtro, and dialogue that seemed strangely predictable.

And that was the kicker.  As movie started and the soundtrack rolled, it sounded way too familiar to have been a movie I only saw once in the cinema.  And the dialogue was cheesy and predictable, so much so that you knew what they were going to say before it was said.  "I came to see a king, but instead I find ... a BOY."  That kind of thing.  I could not shake the feeling that I had seen this movie many, many times.  How else could the music and dialogue be so familiar?  But why did I not remember?  Why?  WHY???

It shocked me to see Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane as these Excalibur-meets-Mad-Max bandits in second string roles.  I guess they all had to start somewhere.  And who the heck knows what happened to the lead actors.  The only other things I remember Lysette Anthony for was the TV movie A Ghost in Monte Carlo, and the Ben Cross version of Dark Shadows.  Lord knows what evil fate befell the leading man.

The DVD itself was really good.  The transfer was beautiful, and it had a number of decent special features.  There was a new commentary track, and an original TV promo documentary about the making of the movie.  I like it when DVD's contain promo documentaries from the original time, as it gives a sense of the time that the movie was made.  Today's featurettes are always interesting but lack the feel of the period.

And as an added extra, the Marvel graphic novel I mentioned earlier had been turned into a 'mini-Krull', where the vision pans over the pages while a wordless soundtrack plays.  It was an odd addition and seemed like someone killing a few hours with Adobe Premiere Pro, but quirky nonetheless.

Krull is the kind of movie I would have loved as a kid, but now it is a movie that tried too hard to be an epic.  But it was a fun way to relive the past and facepalm at the thought of people actually WANTING to be married Krull-style.

I saw both films, when they were first released to theaters. Actually, I think I saw "Krull" twice. "Krull" is one of my favorite films. Not one of my favorite fantasy films, but one of my favorite films of all time. "Kull." Watchable, but mediocre. My vote would have to go to "Krull."

No movie made me want to own a glaive more than KRULL did.
