Title: A DIRTY SHAME (2004)
Post by: The Burgomaster on August 22, 2011, 12:43:43 PM
I watched the NC-17 version of this over the weekend.  An R-rated version also exists.

This is not one of John Waters best movies, but I found it entertaining anyway.  It didn't seem as "genuine" as his earlier movies like PINK FLAMINGOS and MONDO TRASHO.  It almost seemed like he was "forcing" the bizarre humor (mostly sexual and scatalogical) . . . sort of like he was ripping off his own movies (can you rip off yourself?)

The story involves a middle-class housewife (played by Tracy Ullman) who gets hit on the head and becomes a sex addict.  She meets a group of other sex addicts (each one with their own fetish or perversion . . . one couple enjoys "Roman showers," which means they vomit on each other, another guy likes to lick dirt, another guy likes to dress up like a baby, etc.)  The motto of these "12 Apostles" of sex is "Let's go sexing!"

The movie has some very funny dialogue.  I particularly liked:

*  "My husband is on Viagra. Every minute he wants it! I'm Viagra-vated and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"
*  "I seen you, Sylvia Stickles, showing your pubic patch to the bus driver."
*  "It's not safe out! People are shaving their crotches as we speak. There is pubic hair in the air! Everywhere!"

One character enjoys "upper deckers."  (You take a crap in the upper part of the toilet tank and people never think of looking there to find out where the smell is coming from).

Another character enjoys "tromboning."  (I won't go into detail about THIS one).

As you can see, this is typical, "no holds barred" John Waters stuff.  It contains dozens of slang words and phrases describing sex acts and has full frontal male and female nudity.  I found this movie to be reasonably amusing, but I can certainly understand why many people would hate it.

I've tried to like John Waters. I honestly tried. I just can't do it. The only film of his I like is Serial Mom. It worked for me for whatever reason. Nothing against those that like his work, though.

I totally agree. I'm a HUGE John Waters fan and this is my least favorite film. It was kind of an excuse for him to get out these new funny sex terms, saying that there are a lot of great bits in it.
