Title: Top 5 Time: Supernatural Thrillers
Post by: Flick James on August 23, 2011, 07:41:55 PM
Okay, I haven't done one of these in a while.

Let's have your top 5 supernatural thrillers. As usual, when I do these it means I'm looking for suggestions. What better way that to ask for everybody's Top 5?

Ulterior motives.

Anyway. I'll post mine when I've come up with them.

Thumbs up for THE OTHER, RC!  I saw it at the drive-in when I was a kid and have enjoyed multiple viewings over the years.  If you haven't read the book, I recommend it.  It has some interesting differences from the movie.

Not a huge supernatural fan, but I really enjoyed The Nesting.

I can't think of any other "Top 5" type films right away, but want to make sure that for it's undeniably thick atmosphere and great visuals and sets, that The Legend Of Hell House gets in whatever Top 5 lists that will appear in the thread.

This creepy classic never seems to  get the love it deserves. It was a very good movie and it had Roddy MacDowall in it too! A definite candidate for Top 5 (imho, anyhow  )

The Shining (1980)
The Changeling (1980)
The Haunting (1963)
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Omen (1976)

Not completely sure about that list. I always seem to be able to come up with too few or too many favourites, but I can seldom settle on a list of five.

I finally saw that a couple of years ago. I'd read a number of times about what a creepy and shocking movie it was, with some interesting twists, and from that time avoided any information what was actually in the movie until I could track down a copy. I must say, that is one of the most disturbing movies I've seen, and creepy as hell.

Technically your right though those movies are seen as horror because they are unrealistic/fantasy monsters movies.

A thriller tries to be more realistic then fantasy (since the intent is "this can happen to you") and uses almost normal means for the terror, such as a renting a room from a Psycho (actually most of the slasher films are thrillers, although I feel some are grossly classified wrong).

Supernatural Thrillers, tries to make itself a realistic fantasy (again the intent is "this can happen to you" while using faith, Personal/Religious Belief and fear of the unknown as its monsters) and typically using science and logic to prove/disprove the realities; so Ghosts, Demonics (witchcraft, occult, Mediums, etc.), Telekinetic powers, ESP, etc are seen as supernatural thrillers...

Ok my 5 (what I like):

1... Lady in White (1988)
