Title: Are you on any medication?
Post by: voltron on August 30, 2011, 09:53:06 PM
How about listing any meds you're currently on (preferrably for mental stuff). I'm on a cocktail of Zyprexa, Clonazepam, Lamotrigine, and Celexor. And you.....?? I guess the reason I made this topic was that I was off them for a couple of days (pharmacy f**kup) and I felt like I was heroin sick. Not fun at all.

No meds, but I do have to sleep with a CPAP every night . . . basically a transparent Darth Vader mask.

I'm supposed to take ritaline for my ADD, but I don't want to, so I don't. That, fish oil capsules and anti-depressants (which I do take).

Citalopram.  I've got some general anxiety disorder.  I really never had "anxiety", but whenever I went into a public building I felt like I was going to tip over and pass out.  Med's seem to have fixed that.  It's actually an anti-depression drug;  I've never had any problems with depression, but anti-anxiety and anti-depression medications seem to be interchangeable.  It's all about getting the correct level of serotonin in the brain so you don't get too nutty   :teddyr:

I get that sometimes too, Jack: it is a hell of a weird feeling.

I should be on meds for just about everything wrong with me but the pills they put me on made me sicker.

Oh I used to hate that feeling, really effects your quality of life when you've always got to be worrying about that crap whenever you go to work or go shopping or...anything.  There are a ton of different anti anxiety / anti depressant drugs.  Maybe you could ask your doctor about trying something a little less powerful that doesn't make you sick.  I used to be on Lexapro which worked great for me.  The Citalopram only costs about 1/5th as much though, and after a month or so to get used to it, it seems to do about the same thing.  I think the Lexapro had a little extra happiness added to the formula though   :smile:

Never seen a doctor in my adult life.
So I'm either fit as a fiddle or about to collapse.

Although I did pop into a GP's office a few weeks ago.

Nefazodone (anti-depressant SSRI).

I'm assuming we're talking about meds you take daily?  It's a little weird to see two different guys on Clonazepam.  That stuff is highly addictive.  I'd be scared to take it too frequently.  I can understand why Votron felt heroin sick.  Withdrawal from benzodiazepenes probably is as bad as heroin withdrawal, and can even be fatal.

I've been prescribed different courses of various pills for anti-depression/anxiety but none of them have had any noticable effect so I stop, I'm not really a 'pill person' tbh. since last xmas I've completely given up drinking and smoking and that seems to have been the best medication so far. the side effect is I get really bored a lot

I have to take my Clonazepam four times a day. I don't see how it's addictive though, because I'm on a really low dosage and I can definately do without it for quite some time with no side effects. I think the main reason I got sick was withdrawals from my Zyprexa which is an antipsychotic. I'm not quite sure what it does exactly except it knocks me out cold. Most of my meds are to be taken at bedtime anyway. Helps me a lot because I've had severe insomnia for as long as I remember.

SSRI withdrawal would be my bet.  Celexa can cause it, although Paxil is much worse for withdrawal... as is venlafaxine...

Possibly the worst rx for causing dependence and misbehavior is alprazolam (Xanax).  I'm hoping no one here is taking that much.  Clonazepam at least has a long half-life, and if I had to take a benzodiazepine I suppose that would be the one I'd pick.

I take a large dose of ranitidine daily, myself.   Glad that's it.  :)

I assume your doctor prescribed a low enough dose that you won't become dependent.  I know that this drug is widely abused on the street, and like all benzodiazepenes the withdrawals are a b***h.  So I jumped to the conclusion that it was the clonazepam that was causing your symptoms.  This is why I'm not a doctor.  (Glad Zap jumped in while I was posting this).

I take that daily too, or famotidine (I mix them up depending on what's on sale).  I didn't think it was worth reporting.  (They're non-prescription drugs for acid reflux).

I have a doctor who insists on prescribing me Ambien every time I go in for a checkup, because I once complained about insomnia.  I think he must be getting kickbacks on every prescription ordered.  I take it very, very rarely, less than once a month, only as a last resort after I haven't slept for hours.

I take some stuff for Mennier's (inner ear problem) but thats it.... My wife had PPD, and was on some SSRI or other.  She stopped taking them and went into a tailspin, worse than the origianl problem ever was.  She went back on full dose, then weaned herself off over a few months with partial pills and stuff.

* Childrens aspirin for heart
* Vitamin D for heart and general health
* Zetia for cholesterol

* Metoprolol for heart
* Plavix for heart
* Childrens aspirin for heart

  Our doctors must have gone to the same medical school.  :smile:

 I take Metformin for "The Betes"
 Metoprolol for High Blood Pressure
 Lisinopril for High BP
 Hydrochlorothiazide for High BP
 Lipitor for cholesterol
 Baby Aspirin
 Omega 3 supplements
 Co Q-10 to offset the Lipitor which depletes Co Q-10

 And I eat tons of fruit and vegetables to offset the Hydrochlorothiazide which is thought to deplete potassium and B-12 rich foods to offset the B-12 depletion thought to be caused by metformin.

Whew!

 At one point I was taking about 5 other meds for various reasons in addition to that laundry list I just published. I've managed, with a doc's help, to slowly wean myself off them and I've cut back the dosages significantly on some of the remaining meds. My goal is to be completely med free in a year or two.

 I was taking Lexapro until 2 months ago for anxiety. I stopped taking it with my docs consent and I went through withdrawls for almost a month. Felt like electric shocks in my brain. I was also taking Xanax for awhile but I luckily never became addicted. I was always very careful to take it only when absolutely necessary. I stoppd taking it when I was prescribed metoprolol though because the combo can cause respitory distress!

 I can see how Xanax could become addictive. Anyone thinking about taking it should be very careful about not letting themself become addicted. You should think twice about taking it and use it only as a very last resort.

Clonazepam is pretty addicting. I assume only if taking for the sole reason of getting high. Granted, I have an addictive personality and stopped taking it, so I'm very cautious starting any medication due to my personal history.

As of now, I don't even take Advil or NyQuil when sick. In fact, people here mentioned specific things I now avoid, but since they are using a doctor and stuff it's ok.

True in my case certainly: the other thing is if I have had an anxiety or panic attack at work, I come on here, browse and quiet down reasonably quickly. The same goes for when I feel sick or have panic attacks at night, I come on here via my phone and calm down after a while and then am able to sleep.  :smile:

We need them to deal with society.

I actually started my "mood meds" a year ago.  I found myself snapping a lot especially around the kids who of course are relentless.  Figuring it would be best for them and myself , I went on med.  I react with anger a lot less now.

I had been thinking of doing a topic or something on this but here is as good a place as any:

I have had OCD handwashing contamination fear type OCD for the last 10 or so years. It was "under control" with 200 mg of Zoloft (so much so I was down to 50 for a while ) I also developed some unhealthy ritual type behaviour which was also under then out of control . I recently got a new job that is long hours and very tiring. Under control got totally out of control. Compounding this was my new psychiatrists idea to take me OFF Zoloft completely and put me on celexa which is like the East German communist version of Zoloft as far as I can tell.

The last month has been harrowing. I didn't think a person could feel this bad and still be alive. hour long showers, anxiety totally out of control,etc the mornings are especially awful. I would describe them as just total dysphoria however you spell it. I worried myself sick. It was nuts. I was at 0 physically and mentally. It looked like I was headed to a hospital but I've been grinding it out and it's getting slightly better in some ways. As of like an hour ago I'm getting back on Zoloft.

I don't usually share stuff like this but just to warn or remind people: don't wait till you hit rock bottom to seek treatment. Little things that seem like they are under control and even beneficial can get out of control and dangerous before you know it.

I'd like to second Lester's point.  I had a similar situation when I tried to switch anti-depressants at the doctor's suggestion.  For a few weeks I spiraled into a worse depression than the one that caused me to seek treatment in the first place!

Surprisingly, my blood pressure has never been a problem . . . even though I had my heart attack!  I took Lipitor for awhile, but statin drugs give me Rhabdomyolysis.  This is a condition most people get when they are in accidents where they are crushed and muscle fibers are released into their bloodstream.  This could eventually cause kidney problems.  Zetia has not had this effect on me.

Lisinopril for blood pressure (hypertension runs in my family) and Zoloft.

The Zoloft has worked wonders for me.  For years I was in a deep depression but once I started Zoloft, things began to change.  Within the first three months of taking it, I started getting out more and even created my business, Eastern Iowa Airsoft, from scratch.  Still on it and doing fine.   :smile:

Ye-es!

lisinopril
lipitor
metroprolol
venlafaxine

That is the prescription medicines I am taking, the cardiologist also has me on over the counter baby aspirin.

There is a couple of pieces of good news out of all that. (1) I use to take nitrostat for my heart, as needed, but my heart condition has improved to the point that I no longer need to take it. And (2) three out of four of the medicines I am taking are generic, so my pill bill only comes to about $69.00 a month. I go to the pharmacy, and I see people with a pill bill for $200.00 and up, and I wonder how they do it.

  Hey lester I'm sure the Zoloft will help. Remember you weren't just adjusting to a new med, you were also dealing with going off the old med. I don't know why doctors take people off a med when it seems to be doing it's job. The only thing I can think of is that the Celexa rep maybe gave your doc a better deal somehow. Anyway, hang in there. And maybe try to get more rest. I know my OCD is worse when I'm stressed and tired.

So I've been back on Zoloft for a week or so.  I'm still in pretty bad shape but I've been trying to break out of it. Starting to talk about it more with my family, therapist and places like this have helped alot. For so long it was my dirty little secret. Unfortunately, or darkly fortunately, it got to the point where I couldn't hide it anymore. I have had some serious freakouts and some real successes recently, sometimes multiple times in the same day! It's hard. Fighting OCD impulses is very hard because it's your achilles heal if you have it. It's like an elephant trying to not be afraid of a mouse. I was taking a walk last night and I said to myself I would rather walk stark naked down the street than go back home and continue to torture myself  pushing my boundaries.

I have no choice though. When you give in to OCD you just create more fear till theres no where you feel safe except your bed.  If I hadn't gotten this new job and/ or experienced everything I have over the last few months I would be still have "under control" various OCD's and be alot happier than I am now but it would only be a matter of time. They've been really cool at work and I'm going to get a route ( I deliver amazon packages) that is smaller. Delivering stuff is like working in a factory, very tedious and you just sit there and trhink of stuff with no human interaction. My driving job before this was much easier and had shorter hours and was in the city. This one is just driving around my town which is nice but pretty dull. I'm really not cut out for the long hours. At least not doing this type of work, maybe with something more stimulating it ould be lessso.

Anyway, thanks again for all the support

     Nothing that's as much fun  as what I USED to be on!

     I just want everyone to know, I'm not making fun of the topic; I praise God I'm not having to take meds these days.

     I have a sensitivity to anti-depressants, so much so that I've had episodes of violent behavior when on them-I served nine years in prison after being charged with Attempted Murder back in 1997, the result of a psychiatrist perscribing me two anti-depressants (lithium and Depakote) at once.
