Title: Frightfest
Post by: BakuryuuTyranno on September 04, 2011, 09:38:24 AM
Recently I've attended my first Frightfest - which, for example, its 2009 event featured the UK premier of  House of the Devil, Trick R Treat, Pontypool and Triangle (in other words, all of the movies considered the best horror from 2009 except Paranormal Activity,)

Naturally it was incredible. The following films will most likely be considered 2011's best horror (personnally didn't enjoy all of these to the same level as the majority of the crowd, but I'm using the general reaction here)

Troll Hunter – Managed subtle humour (kinda like Alligator, Tremors etc) while being genuinely scary at times. Providd an explanation of the creatures that was  inventive

The Woman - This was somewhat depraved and featured some woman living in the wild being abducted and imprisioned by a somewhat unstable man, whose teenage son wasn’t much saner

The Innkeepers – Inn workers investigate the hauntings at their workplace. Strange customers arrive. Also directed and produced by the House of the Devil team.

Kill List – Actuaully this ones supposed to be ideally watched knowing as little about it as possible. By it involves hitmen.

A Lonely Place to Die – Mountain climbers stumble across a girl kidnapped and left within a hidden box buried under the ground.

A couple more I considered pretty good:

The Holding – Relied primarily on isolated setting and atmosphere, and a family being unaware of their visitor's psychotic personnality. Featured decent characters who were given much character development.

Panic Button - This film had similarities with the psychological elements of Saw (the killers have disturbingly good knowledge of their victims, etc) without the excessive gore that gets Saw dismissed as "torture porn"

Watching these with around 1,400 other people was probably the best experience of the year!

Nice one. I attended last year for a couple of days & really had a great time.

Looking forward to seeing a few of the titles you managed to see, especially looking forward to the inkeepers.

Unrelated note but I must be the only person on earth that thought pontypool was pretty poor.
