Title: Band/Singer that should retire
Post by: claws on September 21, 2011, 11:32:47 PM
Came up with the idea after reading about R.E.M. calling it the quits. What band/singer do you think should retire?

Personally I'd like to see Bon Jovi retire but they still are a hot seller when they release new albums so I guess they'll be around for a few more years.

Madonna - I have nothing against her but I think her glory days are long over.

Janet Jackson - seems like she's been struggling the past few years.

Ozzy Osbourne - His last three albums have been no where near the standard of his earlier output, they were embarrassing infact and he is now a parody of himself. Plus, he never seems to be able to tour these days without getting ill or injuring himself on stage.

Motley Crue - Have only put two albums out in the past decade that weren't very good. Have made stacks of money from touring recently, but they shouldn't be touring as they are an appalling live act.

BulletBoys and Pretty Boy Floyd - Change their line-ups every 2 weeks and still sound like garbage live, even after 20+ years of experience.

I saw them live about 5 years ago, it was horrendous.  Seriously, I've seen local concerts in a hall that were better.

Agreed on Ozzy too...painful.  He seriously looks like an old man in a wig nowadays.  Its just silly.

I'll nominate Aerosmith.  It hurts to do so but the last concert or two I saw them in they go into idiotic blues based jams for 20 minutes at a time.

I nominate:

Metallica: They are an extreme case of a band that should've quit ages ago. Their last truly worthy release was Metallica. After that, they just got worse and WORSE as the years went by. Looking at them now, it's tragic to remember that they were once a kickass thrash band who used to be against selling out. Oh, how they have fallen from grace.  :bluesad:

Yngwie Malmsteen: I'll never understand how this guy managed to get through three decades by playing the same scales over and over again. Yngwie, we get it, you can play fast. You made it pretty clear with just the first album. However, just because you can play really fast, that doesn't mean you're the excellent musician that you claim to be. Plus your lyrics are horrendous. Next:

Deicide: This band started out with a half decent debut and then just pretty much gave up after that. Glen Benton, cut the juvenile satanic crap and at least TRY to make a decent album for a change.

I agree with everyone as far as Ozzy, Metallica and Deicide (HATED these guys since day one). I'd like to add Cannibal Corpse and Mortician (ugh) to the list. I think pretty much all of their stuff sucks.

Eminem's still great. A serious Eminem is actually a bit better.

Metallica needs to stop. Nothing they've made since Master of Puppets isn't even worth my time.

Agree with Ozzy Osborne.

all the awful arena rock bands with 1 original member that play at county fairs and haven't released new material in 12 years.

Outside of his music, I thought his cameo as himself in Funny People was one of the funniest part of that movie.

I didn't even know he was gonna be in it til I saw it at the theater.  Him yelling at Ray Romano was hilarious.

Glad he has apparently stayed sober.  Thought this latest album was his strongest in years.

Rolling Stones

I mean come on, Bill hicks was making jokes about the fact Keith Richards was still alive in the 1980's. In fact are any of them still really alive? or have they been cunningly replaced with remote controlled waxwork replicas, forever destined to be half way through a worldwide stadium tour in a city near you for the rest of eternity... they were releasing albums before 99% of us on here were born, and -no offence- this is probably the messageboard with the oldest average user age I've ever posted on  :teddyr:

Skepticism: I may enjoy the cult genre that is funeral doom metal, but these guys bore the ever living crap outta me. While I like a few songs from their debut album, Stormcrowfleet, the rest of their material is a total snoozefest with a capital S.

Journey: Now, I admit that I'm not the biggest Journey fan out there, but I have to admit that they've wrote some pretty amazing stuff. They have my respect for trying to continue without Steve Perry. I hate to say this and sound like an a-hole but they haven't quite been the same since Steve's departure. Look guys, you had a phenominal career, you've made hit songs that'll stand the test of time and I'm pretty sure you have the fortune to show it. Out of respect, I ask for you to please pull the plug and let Journey go.

For me, that scene made the whole movie.

I agree about Metallica, the Stones, Aerosmith & Ozzy.  Great artists once, but, damn......

The Cure  - same as above
U2 - I know they're still fairly popular but the last three albums have been watered down retreads of ACHTUNG BABY
Stone Temple Pilots - their reunion is a joke, they've already cancelled half their tour
I also wish Morissey would just go away.

I didn't really get into U2 until their popularity fell off.

The Smiths.   They shoulda retired before they made any albums.  :P  At least the songs I've heard have been (to my tastes) insanely annoying.    "How Soon is Now" played as I was driving home.  Gaaaah!

Forgive me if they're your favorite band or anything, dear reader..

Actually-as a touring band-they are retired. There last tour was the Bigger Bang tour in 2007. Their last studio album of original songs was in 2005.

Guns n Roses-I mean-c'mon. They band calling themselves Guns n Roses played Rock in Rio on the 2nd of this month. Jerk off Axl kept fans sitting in the rain for an hour and a half  late. Whatta shmuck.
Plus...they sound like s**t. Whatta shame.

Sad.

Note the guitar player f**king up because he's too busy f**king around with the stupid Star Wars helmut instead of concentrating on his work.
Whatta joke.

I'm a huge Smiths fan, but I think Morrisy should stop, as his solo material clearly is not strong enough he has to result to playing Smiths songs at his gigs.

Also I really like Marilyn Manson, but again think he should have stopped just before Eat Me, Drink Me.

Aerosmith--Big, big fan.  But, they've "been working" on this new album since around 2003, and it's still not done.  They've had time to tour, do a video game, tour again, do some solo stuff, do American Idol, fight each other, cry, fire the singer, threaten lawsuits to each other, then reconcile.  Yet, even with songs written and singer Steven Tyler not busy with American Idol right now, they're not recording, apparently.

I'm a big fan, but they should just give it up.  They've had a good career.  And if this album isn't that good, well, eh.

U2- Never quite grasped their popularity.

They're kind of like the John Cusack of music: they make a product calculated to appeal to women but retain enough masculinity that men can tolerate them - at least in theory.  I'll defend ACHTUNG BABY to my dying day, but they're pretty much a machine at this point.

I have had it with Maroon 5.  All their songs sound exactly the same and I'm sick of having that douchebro Adam Levine foisted on my eyes like I'm actually supposed to think he's appealing.

Also, the remaining members of Queen should really just pack it in.  I didn't mind the Paul Rodgers tour so much because he brought his own style, but Adam Lambert is trying too hard to mimic Freddy.  Nobody can replace Freddy, it's dumb to even try.
