Title: Horror movie, people trapped in hell or another dimension
Post by: Archivist on September 30, 2011, 04:54:59 AM
Here's a challenge, and I will do my best to give as much information as possible.

I never saw this movie, but I read about it in a book about science fiction and horror movies in the late 80's or 1990.  The book had black and white photos which showed movies like The Devil's Rain; some movie about a white man with a second, negro, head grafted onto him; and the original Fly movie, so that probably gives an idea of the time period that my mystery movie comes from.

The description of the movie, as best I recollect was this: a group of people are trapped in a world that is like hell, or another dimension.  They run from strange creatures.  And I clearly remember the description being that unlike other movies, there was no happy ending, the people stayed trapped there, or died there, or something to that effect.

Any ideas about what this could have been?

The Black Guy with an extra head (Ray Milland's) is The THING With TWO HEADS (1972).

Boy...the main question...DAM! Sounds awfull familiar!
If it was sci-fi-I would think JOURNEY TO THE 7th PLANET (1962) or it's remake GALAXY OF TERROR (1981).
Also kinda sounds like the end of the BEYOND (1981)

Thanks a lot, RC.  Considering that I haven't even seen the movie it's going to be hard to know if any of those is correct.  Doesn't look like the 7th Planet as the wiki page says that they got away.  Ditto for Galaxy of Terror, I think.

Man, that video clip of The Beyond actually sparked off a pretty nasty nightmare last night, so I think I'll give that a miss!  But thanks for the suggestions, they were all movies I had never heard of.

Solved.  In the back of my mind I knew that this movie had a one-word title, and yesterday I saw a DVD in the local cult video shop.  The title stood out at me and suddenly I realized that this was the movie I wanted to identify.  The movie is Equinox (1970), and is a lot more low budget and way more cheesy than I expected!

It started as a short student film that was made for $6500 in 1967.  Other companies picked it up and shot extra footage that turned it into a feature length production, and it would have gone unknown had the director not gone on to do special effects work for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.

Here's the trailer in all of its late 60's glory:

It's interesting that this movie was in the same book as movies like The Fly, The Devil's Rain, The Thing with Two Heads and The Man with X-Ray Eyes.  The editors of the book obviously deemed this movie important 'enough' to include.
