Title: GIMMIE FIVE!
Post by: alandhopewell on October 13, 2011, 12:50:52 PM
The game is simple....I ask for five examples of songs, the first person who gets them right gets to pick their own five examples. Obviously, no one can stop anyone from Googling, but if you can avoid it, do so.

GIMMIE FIVE songs where the cover was a bigger hit than the original, with YouTube clips, if possible.

I'm at work so the security settings don't allow YouTube clips.  I'll give it a go nevertheless.

1. Blinded By The Light- Manfred Mann (Bruce Springsteen)
2. When Will I Be Loved- Linda Ronstadt (Everly Brothers)
3. Your Love (Keeps Lifting Me Higher)- Rita Coolidge (Jackie Wilson)
4. Leather And Lace- Don Henley & Stevie Nicks (Waylon Jennings/Jesse Colter)
5. Without You- Harry Nilsson (Badfinger)

I'll wait for a confirmation that my answers are correct before doing the next 5.

The Jackie Wilson original of "Higher and Higher" charted higher than the Rita Coolidge cover; you were correct about the others.

GO FOR IT!

Next: 5 songs involving a breed of bird in the title (chicken, crow, parakeet, etc.)
They were all songs written by the artist in parentheses, and performed as big hits by the artist/group after the hyphen.

Well, I'm assuming you want songs where the word was actually screamed (or at least yelled), not sung, yes? Otherwise it would be too easy.

"Rain King" - Counting Crows (screams "yeah!" at the end of the song)
"Shout" - The Isley Brothers ("yeah yeah!" "yeah yeah!" is screamed by some random band member)
"I Put a Spell on You" - Screamin' Jay Hawkins (screams "Whoa Yeah!" just before the sax solo)
"I'm Just a Bill" - Schoolhouse Rock (when the bill get signed into law, the bill shouts "Oh Yeah!")
"Baba O'Riley" - The Who (Daltrey's iconic scream of "yeah" at the end of middle synth part)

THE BEATLES "Got To Get You Into My Life" (Went to #7 in 1976, 10 years after first released on Revolver)

THE TOKENS "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (a cheat: first, went to #1 in 1961, then, THE TOKENS re-recorded the song and had a minor hit nearly a decade later).
