Title: Things your folks told you about yourself as a child?
Post by: Trevor on October 19, 2011, 04:45:44 AM
I don't want to bore people with too many details but let's just sum up by saying that the first few months of my life were, to put it mildly, fraught with stress, tears and anxiety, especially for my adoptive parents who rescued me from a life in foster care and/or an orphanage. Much like my special niece Thandi, in fact, only forty years later.

After my adoptive parents had officially adopted me, my *&^%$# birth parents challenged this court decision but their challenge was overturned. My Dad told me years later that Mom had told him on the courthouse steps ~ with me in her arms ~ that "if anyone tries to take this child away from me now, I will kill them."

Dad said it was the only time that he ever looked in Mom's eyes and got seriously scared.  :buggedout: :buggedout:

My mother always said I was very introspective.  I never wanted to talk about experiences like vacations but I'd always sit quietly and reflect on things.  I'd often keep to myself while playing and not bother anyone.

That I was a miserable bastard and I should go outside and play and stop tracking mud all over the goddamn carpet and they hoped I'd have kids who acted just like me some day.

Akin to Burgomaster, I was often told that I was a useless c**t who was not able to do anything good.

Cheers to your adoptive parents, Trevor. I myself was partially raised, and in a far more competant manner than my biological father, by a step. He was a great man and a true patriarch. It's nice to hear that a legal system favored the well-being of the child. It disgusts me that in the U.S., it seems as if the system is designed to keep children in f**ked up families, raised by f**k-up parents that don't want them, while people who genuinely want children but are biologically limited have to adopt kids from China or Russia.

My Mom went to see my (4th grade? Sounds right.) teacher for parent-teacher night a couple of weeks into the school year. My teacher sees my mom at the other end of the hall and yells "Ms.HEATH! You must be a drinking woman!"   :teddyr: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: I feel so proud.  :teddyr:

My parent described me as a good, imaginative kid.  I call bulls**t on the 'good' part.  I know I was a rotten bastard as a kid.   :teddyr:

That I was a very quiet, well behaved unwanted "accident".

I was told I started out as a quiet one, and my older sisters adored me, then at some point at about 3 years of age I became an annoying little s**t. And then became quiet and introspective again when I reached about 5. Then slowly, over time, I became this inflammatory a***ole you know today.

I tried it, and it made it worse.

You are talking about whiskey, right?

Funny, I can't remember my parents saying much of anything to me as a kid. I was pretty quiet and very reserved, more or less well-behaved, and as a typical middle-kid pretty much flew under the radar. I became pretty self-sufficient very early.

It was made clear to me, with many oblique comments, that I was the "smart" one with the drive to do things. That seems to have played itself out, I'm now the one who has gone and got himself college-educated and, until recently, has made himself busy non-stop.

My parents, who had kids fairly late, recently sent all of us sons papers regarding what their wishes are when they pass away. I was named as the primary executor. I imagine that's because I'm the one who has no problem doing all the work.

I count myself lucky. I think my parents are lovely people. I've never received anything but support, and I truly enjoy their presence in my life. The same goes for my extended family. I grew up amidst a bunch of relatives, with cousins of the same age. I'm thankful for my family, very thankful. With my group of friends I've realized that that is very rare indeed.

I'm glad of two things: 1) that I know you and 2) that I've never met your folks.

Bloody hell.......  :buggedout: That sounds like what all my teachers minus one said about me.

Thanks, Flick. My sister and brother adopted Thandi and then, almost a month after taking her in, my sis found out that she was expecting. Now Uncle Zombie [me] has a niece and nephew and I love them to bits. They're a handful but I luv 'em anyway.
