Post by: Ed, Ego and Superego on October 20, 2011, 02:42:29 PM
The previous post about what you don't know got me thinking..what would you like to know?
My list:
1. WhoopA$$- I know some martial arts, but would like more and to be proficient in em. Escrima, Muay Thai, maybe even knives.
2. Languages- I'd like to be proficient in a few.
3. Writing- I'd like to be an excellent written communicator.  No comments on my typing please.
4. Muscial instrument- I can't play anything and have no knack.
5. Chef Skills- I can cook, but I'd like knife skills, and some real technique knowledge on cooking.

Sign Language and I wouldn't mind being a black belt in some form of martial art.

I'll sign on with the martial arts. I wish I had the physical and mental discipline to be a master at it. It's one of those things that can only be a benefit.

I'd like for my wife and I to take some classes in massage.  Some friends of ours did it, I can only imagine it would be...fun  :teddyr:

Would also like to take some singing lessons.  Preferably some computer based thing, to save me the embarrassment and the teacher the agony.

A few things that I'd like to learn:

I like to work with acrylics, but would like to try watercolor painting.

Since I love gardening, I would like to learn something like Garden Design, maybe even take courses to eventually become a Master Gardener.

As Circus mentioned, Sign Language would also be interesting.

How to make the PERFECT chocolate cake  :teddyr:

I'd love to be able to play the piano but nowaday if something isn't work related, I generally don't have time to learn it.

I have thought I would like to take up fencing.   (Not the keep-the-horses-in kind, I can do that!)  I'm probably too old for it now - reflexes have slowed down too much.

I remember that as a youngster I always wanted to do some rock climbing.  Then I found out (the hard way) that I am not so good with heights. Can't climb when you are frozen to the spot!   :bluesad:

I would like to do the following:

1. Take up martial arts.
2. Adopt a child.
3. Learn to play a musical instrument.
4. Learn to fly an aeroplane.

Less seriously:

1. Take lessons in how to cross-dress correctly. I have that Joan Collins thing going on.  :buggedout:

I'm all for really learning how to cook.  I do pretty well with a grill, and cook an awesome breakfast with scratch-made pancakes.  There's a lot more to culinary art than grilling and breakfast.

Would like to learn to play the piano, Billy Joel style.

Blacksmithing.

Oh yeah, I can relate  :teddyr:  I think I've left finger impressions in aluminum ladders from gripping them as hard as humanly possible

I wish I knew more about cars. I know how to change a tire, I know where the gas goes in, and that's about it. I'd like to learn how to change oil and do other maintenance/minor repairs myself.

Some sort of awesome martial art, too.
Drive a car.
Probably forgetting a lot.

Can't be arsed putting any time into either, though.

Newt you may be too old to compete but you're never too old to learn. I started kung-fu last year right before I turned 45. I can't keep up with the young up-and-comers in a competition setting but I'm still getting a lot out of it, including enjoyment. And as I'm learning, once you get the basic skills down you acutally can sometimes substitute trickery and skill for raw speed and power. I say go for it.

Myself, I'd like to juggle, learn an instrument , draw and fly a plane. I also wouldn't mind having some decent "handy man" skills. I'm lucky I can change a light bulb without electrocuting myself.

I've been looking a Whizzer knock-offs lately.
I've noticed they all seem to come with pretty much the same conversion kit, all using one of five different kinds of stripped down lawn mower engines I could pick up at my local hardware store.

I've been hearing for years about kids putting a lawn mower engine in their bicycle, & i wish I could figure out how two do that...

Gosh, all sorts of things I wouldn't mind learning.

There's all kinds of software programs I wouldn't mind learning, usually expense ones that I'd need college classes for.

Wouldn't mind learning a bit about cars, basic repairs and maintanence and stuff.  I remember a couple summmers ago I helped my stepbro do some repairs to my car and it really helped me understand the appeal of the whole, working with your hands thing, you know?

Wish I could learn electronics, seems like something that would interest me.

As hard as I've tried, Ive never taken to any musical instrument, not the guitar, keyboard, harmonica or clarinet.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out DAZ 3D, with little success.

Wow, that's four out of the five instruments I've tried but failed to master.  You left out the trumpet.

I'd like to go back and learn the harmonica properly.  And learn self-defense, though I'd prefer down and dirty practical streetfighting to martial arts.  And brewing my own beer is something I've always considered taking up.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out DAZ 3D, with little success.

My StepDad plays trumpet professionally in a local alumni band. My brother in law plays trumpet at his church every Sunday.
About fifteen years ago, I bought myself one of those $10 bugles you find in curio shops (it really works) to see if I could join in on the fun. You can probably guess how that turned out.

I've never tried brewing, & even though I don't drink anymore, I've always wanted to, especially after Ken Burns latest opus.
My cousin Brian used to brew a lot before he got deep into restoring & racing vintage bikes. He now preoccupied with his Moto Electra Racing Team, & will soon be giving lectures on how to make Carbon Fiber Nano Tubes.
:hatred: He's accomplished everything I've ever wanted to try!

 I'm currently somewhere just out of the gate on restoring my '75 CB400f, but being on SSDI in this economy tells me it won't be anytime soon. :bluesad:

I take fencing, and there are many older fencers in the club.  One of them took it up as part of a physical therapy.

Skills I would like to learn:
Computer maintenance-I'd love to be able to do the upgrades and work on my computer. Right now I'd like to do some up grades to my own, but don't want to risk damaging it. So if I want to get it done, I'd have to  pay for it.

Some more basic car or house maintenance.

Another language
Voice Acting

I'd really like to know know how to draw well. I keep having visions of things and see shapes and what not in lclouds and floor tiles and everywhere. It would be nice to draw them in details beyong my ultracrappy stick figures.

I'd also like to know more about cars.
