Title: Movies you underestimated by their trailer
Post by: Olivia Bauer on December 05, 2011, 06:17:53 PM
I for one thought Zombieland was going to suck when I saw the trailer; I was very very wrong. Anyone else have a movie like that?

HUGO was not the facile, predictable kids' movie this trailer would lead you to believe.

Moneyball.  Of course i have to admit that i was initially skeptical about the film being made as the book came out like 10 yrs ago and although Jonah Hill played.... Jonah Hill it was a good movie imo.

Sherlock Holmes.  The trailer I saw looked like it was trying to say "Sherlock Holmes is cool now because he is on crack."  The fact that Downey Jr. was in it didn't exactly help my opinion either.  I can't remember how I got corralled into seeing the movie, but I was glad I did.  I loved it!  It reminded me so much of the old Wild Wild West TV series, which I really enjoy.  Now I can't wait for the next Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes film.

"Lilo and Stitch" and "Galaxy Quest" are two that spring to mind.

I thought I'd find it mildly amusing, not drop-dead funny; the owls alone were worth the price of admission.

This one goes way back:

Arthur (1981)

The t.v. promos and trailers did not at all make it look like a good, funny, engaging movie. I remember seeing them as a kid and thinking it looked like a stupid movie. Then I saw it on cable and, even as a kid, realized it was gold. But it's weird, it was like there was no way of making a promo for that movie that made it look like an entertaining movie. The promos were basically clips of many of the one-liner jokes that a peppered throughout the movie, and in a trailer they did not work in the slightest, but in the context of the movie they were hysterical.

Good one.  I thought, "Oh, no.  Another stupid comedy.  And to make it worse, Dudley Moore is in it."  Eventually, I saw it and enjoyed it.

I still haven't seen ARTHUR because it looks like another stupid comedy.

Are you joking? You really have never seen it?

Not only have I never seen it, I have no plans to.  I'm not boycotting it or anything, it just isn't on my "to see" list.

Well, I hate it when people tell me I have to see something, so I won't do that to you. Besides, you're a confident individual who is going to do invest your time in what is valuable to you. I was just surprised, given your wide and generally solid tastes (as I have noted at least), that you had not seen it or would consider it a "hands off" item. If it's a Dudley Moore thing, I can understand that, but I do think you should consider giving it a whirl. It's a classic and pretty damn funny actually.

The CHANGELING (2008)-It looked like a long drawn out tearjerker. Well-it WAS a tear jerker-but far from boring! I was fascinated.

When I saw the trailer for Heaven's Gate, I thought it was going to be a good movie.

*I must buy and review this.

Ooh, good call.  That movie was much more than I expected.

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS wasn't the goofy punchfest this trailer indicated it would be:

Unlike a lot of other people, I didn't care for the parody trailers for the new Muppet movie.
The movie itself, on the other hand, is a huge breath of fresh air after years of sticking the Muppets through insufferable garbage (I only needed to sit through 2 minutes of 'Muppets Wizard of Oz' before I couldn't take it any longer). The only movies that beat it are Henson's first two (I loved it even more than Muppets Take Manhattan).

Agreed. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of seeing it by the parody trailer I saw. I am now looking forward to it, but not because of the trailer.

The film is basically a much-needed "f**k you!" to cynicism, so you have to go into it with the right mindset. I'm glad I did.

Oh yeah, I remember the Muppets Wizard of Oz... and now I don't.  So forgettable that I don't remember the second I do.
