Title: Who's your daddy?
Post by: The Burgomaster on December 08, 2011, 03:54:13 PM
My first and middle names are Joseph and Louis.  Same as my father.  His father's name was Sebastiano Joseph.  All I can say is I'm glad I was named after my father and not my grandfather.  Were you named after your dad?  (It will be interesting to see how many females say "yes" to this question).

You and I have the same middle name, Burgo.

My first and middle names are James Louis. My father's first and middle names are also James Louis. His father was Louis Robert. The name Robert has been in our family for generations, being the first name of the Irish Quaker who immigrated to Pennsylvania in the mid 1700's.

Oh, and that same man that came over from Ireland was among the very first settlers of Kentucky. There's a little unincorporated rural area outside of Bowling Green named after my family. I've never been there, however.

My dad's names were Thomas James and my middle name is Thomas ~ people who don't know me all that well or at all ask me what the T in Trevor T. Moses stands for. If they are nice about it, I say Thomas, if they are both nice about it and Star Trek fans to boot, I say Tiberius.  :teddyr:

* If they're in my face, I say the T stands for Trouble.  :buggedout:

My father's name is James Elde Steele. The Elde is his mother's family's name.

My name is Robert Joseph Steele. I am named after the grandfathers on both sides of the family. On my mother side, Robert Ruben Martin, of which my uncle, his son, is Robert Ruben Martin, Jr. My father's father is Joseph Steele, commonly known as Jack.

I would not name my child after myself, but would like it if the name Robert is kept alive in the family.

My name is also Kahsonk, which is my Tlingit name. Those names are a bit different, as they are quite literally the property of our clan. The names are given to children, and they are reused so that the names stay alive. I carry around a piece of paper in my wallet, given to me by my uncle, which illustrates the history of the name I now hold.

Actually, if we include my confirmation name, we go from Joseph Louis to Joseph Louis Paul.  I haven't been to church much since I received my confirmation, so I usually forget the "Paul."

I am not named after anyone in my father's side. In fact, I don't talk to anyone on that side of the family and haven't since I was five. In fact, my father wanted to name me Wadsworth.

My mother named me Anthony, after her then-favorite Days Of Our Lives character.

As did I. I had heard the term before but didn't realize the Tlingit territories were that expansive, and very coastal. Is it true that Tlinigit lineage is traced maternally?

Well, we're pretty great in general.

Yes, traditional Tlingit society is matrilineal. It's easiest to picture if you realize the clan is the most important societal atom, said clan being defined by who your mother is.

In this thread, which is interested in fathers, traditional Tlingit society would be the anomaly. The father of a child was always outside the clan, so had a decreased importance. In fact, it was not the father who was responsible for the upbringing of the child. That responsibility went to the mother's brothers, who were responsible for teaching the child. The father was always important, but his place in the child's upbringing was always more distant.

I should say that I was raised in the traditional American nuclear family. But all of the old Tlingit traditions are still at work, just modified. So the importance of uncles is still at work.

I also mentioned that Kahsonk is my name, but it isn't mine in the way you might think your's is. I am the current person who is referred to that as, but it isn't mine to do with as I please. The name is clan property, and it's a measure of respect for our family that is was bestowed upon me. When I die, if we can keep tradition alive, it will go on to somebody else.
