Title: Movie scenes that scared or disturbed you as a kid?
Post by: Archivist on December 12, 2011, 02:33:22 AM
The thread about the Final Destination poster got me thinking about the things that scared me as a kid, and I'm sure we've all got a few moments that scared or disturbed us in days gone by.  For me:

- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).  The scene where the brain slug was fed into the astronaut's ear, inside his helmet.  Ewwwww!  That made me absolutely cringe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJTi7KJPx_E

- The Black Hole (1979): two scenes were nasty, the first being where the giant robot Maximillian uses his rotor arm to shred through some guy's stomach.  In a Disney movie, no less!  The second part was at the end, where Maximillian somehow merges with his human creator in a hellish landscape, and you can see his creator's eyes looking around furtively through the robot's eye slot.  The implication that I drew at that time was that he was trapped inside the motionless robot for eternity, only able to peer out from inside.  I have not seen that movie for decades but that scene was burned into my brain.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzUJJKDa558

- Moonraker (1979): that movie was full of scary stuff for a very young kid.  Jaws with his metal teeth, biting everything!  People!  Steel cables!  Everything!  The thought of some gigantic, unstoppable man biting things was highly disturbing to me.  Although I do remember Jaws' girlfriend with the glasses being very cute, even as a kid, so that helped ease things for me.  Not to mention the nerve gas killing people inside sealed chambers!  James Bond stuck in a g-force training centrifuge!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2GTKBx4H5Y

I know I have more, but those are the ones that spring to mind right now.  Anyone else?

The eerie murder scene in Murder On The Orient Express.

The car crash scene with Leonard Nimoy in Baffled  ~ also the vision sequences. :buggedout:

The corpse revival scene in Horror Express  :buggedout:

I grew up during a civil war so I could pretty much see true horror for myself.

the first kill scene on the moor in American Werewolf In London. first time I think I saw a 'bloody death' on a screen. I was only about 6, my older cousin had the film on video and we watched it when his parents were out. gruesome to this day!

The opening to Good Burger with the talking and floating hamburgers.  Seriously.  That was some freaky crap.

The scene where the woman turns into plant food in Troll 2.  Still kind of creepy nowadays, but back then, it was downright horrifying.

The librarian from The Ghostbusters always scared me to. I guess I was kinda skittish as a kid.

Is that the part with the seemingly harmless ghost that suddenly turns into some snarling monster?  If so, that part freaked out my brother so thoroughly he had to leave the cinema and go home.  I didn't think it was that bad, but at his age I had already been freaked out by The Black Hole, the Wrath of Khan, and Jaws with his steel teeth.

I used to be freaked out by vampire movies as a kid, but in my late teens I came to really enjoy them.  It was in the time of those other movies that the TV version of Salem's Lot came out, and the mere concept sent me running to my room.  Some years later I was watching every single vampire movie I could find.

The transformation scenes in Demons (1985) - especially the "teeth" part - really freaked me out as a kid. When I watch it now, I just have to smile. I remember being scared of the last few minutes of The Beast Within (it was promised in the tagine).

Leatherface chasing Sally with a chainsaw in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). I was sweating bullets.
Said scene was topped by the dinner table sequence. The insane intensity of it all, and the close up of Sally's eyeball scared me more than anything.

HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM- The spikes coming out of the binoculars.

THE HYPNOTIC EYE-The model catching her hair on fire on the stove burner.

GIANT BEHEMOTH- The doll floating all by itself after the monster sinks the ferry.

QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE- The Queen's face, when her mask is pulled off.

CREATURE WITH THE ATOM BRAIN- When the monster breaks the man's back.

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE- When the guy comes back to the cabin with half his brain gone.

HORROR OF DRACULA- That close-up of Christopher Lee, bloodshot eyes bulging, blood dripping from his fangs-I jumped back into the next row.

20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA- The squid, natch....and I was fifteen.

I watched Sleepy Hollow when I was 8 and it scared the hell out of me. I didn't have nightmares or anything (I never have nightmares) but for the next few days I was scared to walk around alone in my house. All family members pretending they had no head afterwards didn't particularely help either.
Besides that there were films that scared me while I was watching them but nothing that really had any after effects of any kind. Not that I recall anyways.

The voice of the computer in "2001-A Space Odyssey" creeped me out no end....not a specific scene but I used to occassionally hear that voice in dreams...yikes!

The scene in Disney's "Song of the South" where the little boy got hurt by the bull...never watched it a second time.

I think I was like 14 or 15 when I first saw the gouged eyes being carried in Blue Eyes Of The Broken Doll.  That was my first experience of gouged eyes and it really, really got me freaked out for many years.
Also, a couple scenes in Creepshow got to me: the Crate monster either slashing or chewing out a hole in the student's neck, and the cockroaches emerging from Pratt's chest.  Oh, and also the head on the birthday cake.  Nowadays, of course, it's all good, gory fun.

One more from BLUE EYES OF THE BROKEN DOLL/HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN was the ending where the girl's corpse is shown close-up with maggots in her empty eye sockets.  Oh God, yuck!

Also, in another eye-related scene, I squirmed when Michael Myers injected the hypodermic needle into the nurse's eyeball in Halloween II.. then looks at the her corpse on the floor in admiration of his handiwork!  This was shortly after the nurse discovers the body of a doctor with a needle right through the pupil!  Gyuhh!!!

I have two that really freaked me out. When I was little the critters scene where they're in the guys Easter Bunny suit really freaked me out. The worst one I didn't remember until a few years ago where I actually had like a panic attack seeing where my long time fear came from for the first time since childhood. It was in Phantasm II or III I can't remember now (of course). It was the part where the Tall Man's hand gets cut off and turns into a crazy creature thing then climbs up that guys pantleg to his groin. UGH! SO HORRIBLE!

I had a tough stomach, so even the goriest, most creepy horror films never really scared me, although in T2 Sarah burning with her skeleton revealed at the end of her dream where the world is coming to an end, used to freak me out a bit. Just the way the blast dismantled everything from her skin to her voice box, then you get this frightful visual of the bare skeleton clinging onto the fence.

I was 7 when my mom dropped me and my sisters off at the Joy Theater to watch Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978).  Not appropriate for kids!  One scene that really got me was when the hairs on the guy in the mud bath reached out to grab Donald Sutherland's arm!  Other creepy scenes were the dart in the guy's neck, and the part where Donald has to bury a hoe in Jeff Goldblum's face.

The death Of Johny Depps Charector in the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie (Also Johny Depps first movie) I still to this day, have no idea how Freddy killed him to make his blood and guts liqufy and then fountain up from his bed to drench the room... Seriously I may not want to know. That whole movie gave me insomnia thought xD

Also disney movies were creepy... That is walt Disney for you... This may not be a movie, but when my dad brought back a stuffed toy off the Chessie cat from disney land. I Regreted having the Name Alice, Cause it's... staring at me at night, made me fear it was trying to eat my soul >_< dad had to keep it at his office.

I love the stuff that scared the hell out of me as a kid. Sure at the time it caused some psychological scars, but, eh, childhood is rough all over.

One memory I have is, I believe, from the movie Wired to Kill. It's an '80s movie about a nerdy kid who takes his revenge on some thugs. I really don't remember too much about it. However, there is one scene where the nerdy kid dismantles a battery and makes a white powder of its contents. Presumably it was battery acid, because that was a term that everybody knows and don't bother knowing the actual chemistry of batteries.

Anyway, the kid manages to trick one of the thugs into snorting it like cocaine. The next scene was the thug dead with white foam streaming from his mouth and nostrils. Scared/disturbed the living bejeesus out of me. I was so wound up about it that when several years later my cousin took apart a D battery to see what was inside it, I freaked out. Such was the scenes etching into my brain.

I gather the movie isn't in print now. I'd love to see it again, if only to see what my young brain was so freaked out about.

The part at the end of Gremlins when the Dad says, "You might have a Gremlin in your house."  The movie had terrified the crap out of me as it was but that just pushed it straight over the edge.  I actually started screaming, "NO!  NOOOOO!" and Mom and Dad had to take me out of the theater.  I made poor Dad thoroughly check the house before I'd go to bed for at least a week.

Also, the part in Who Framed Roger Rabbit where Judge Doom murders the shoe by dunking it in the dip bothered the hell out of me.  To this day, I skip that part whenever I watch the movie.

I had to get in on this because there are a couple of things that really freaked me out in movie terms as a youth.

Someone mentioned 2001: A Space Odyssey before, and I could handle the movie well, except for the very last scene where the Star Child sloooowly turns to look at the audience as "Thus Spake Zarathustra" blasts out full volume behind him.  FREE-KEE.  To this day, I'll watch the whole movie EXCEPT for the very end.

And this is kinda movie-related so forgive me if I'm out of bounds here.  1978.  The movie Magic.  Fats the ventriloquist dummy.  THAT TV AD.  Children of the Seventies, you know the exact one that I mean, don't you?  That is the most horrifying 30 seconds I have ever experienced as a youth in my life.  And if you don't know what I'm talking about, forget about me posting that horrific thing in THIS thread!  You just go and Google "Magic 1978 TV ad" yourself.. but don't blame me for any nightmares you suffer afterwards!

The final segment in Trilogy of Terror, especially at the end when she's squatting  with the messed up face and holding the knife waiting for her mother to come over (if I'm remembering right that is).  Very scary stuff to see on tv at that time.

I don't think people who weren't around for the 80s can really understand the impact that scene had back then.  Unmasking the monster scenes were pretty old hat but I don't think any other horror movie of the time (except maybe Friday the 13th Part 7) had a monster that was worth the buildup.  The Predator was worth it.  It looked completely alien and so real!  Then it beat up Arnold Schwarzenegger!!!  Back in 1987, that was roughly equivalent to someone being able to beat up God.  To an eight-year-old kid, especially, the Predator was one scary mofo.
