Title: Comic Book Legends-Top 10 Post by: RCMerchant on December 18, 2011, 08:13:32 AM Who-or what-are your comic book favorites of all time?
Mine-I tend to love the classics-I aint followed comics in the last 30 years-so feel free to enlighten me, 1. The SPIRIT by Will Eisner-Warren Publishing (the guy behind Creepy,Famous Monsters and Vampirella)-reprinted old Spirit comics from the 1940's'. Eisner was so ahead of his time-a genuis. 2.SGT.FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS-Ok-this comic was started by Stan and Jack Kirby-but when Dick Ayers took over the art chores-it got real gritty-inna good way. No one gives Dick Ayers enuff credit, He usta draw for those cheap jack VOODOO TALES comics too-the ones that had the gory covers! 3.The INVADERS-Cap,the Sub Mariener,the original Human Torch,and sometimes Union Jack and Spitfire-drawn by Jack Robbins. Fighting Nazi's! Great comic. 4.DEVIL DINOSAUR-Jack again-I cant say enuff good things about this.So I wont even try.Its epic. 5.the FANTASTIC FOUR-Lee/Kirby era. I lived with this comic when I was a little kid. 6.SWAMP THING-Bernie Wrightson. Nuff sed. 7.any thing by Basil Wolverton. 8.SGT ROCK-by Joe Kubert AND even better by the great Russ Heath. 9.MAD-do you have to ask? Mad magazine is still great! 10..EC comics-I wasnt even born when the old EC's came out-but I have a huge collection of the reprints. * TALES OF SUSPENSE (issues #39 to #99) - Origin of IRON MAN and some great early IRON MAN stories with Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, Black Widow, Mandarin, and others. After awhile, CAPTAIN AMERICA was added to this book and every issue had one IRON MAN story and one CAPTAIN AMERICA story. After issue #99, they got their own books and TALES OF SUSPENSE was discontinued. * AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: My favorite stories are issues #200 and lower. Especially about the first 50 issues. The early stories with Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Green Goblin, Rhino, Mysterio, Molten Man . . . damn, those were great. * AVENGERS: Again, the first 200 issues were great. I really enjoyed the period when Giant Man/Ant Man/Goliath/Yellow Jacket/Hawkeye kept changing identities and costumes. * WEREWOLF BY NIGHT: This book was destined for greatness, but they allowed it to get very silly. The early stories in Marvel Spotlight were great and Mike Ploog's art was excellent. Unfortunately, when WEREWOLF got its own book it was only good for about the first 20 issues. Actually, I'm a big fan of moat Silver and Bronze Age Marvel comics and a few DC titles (e.g., JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, FLASH). The ones I mentioned above are just a few examples. Got turned off when it was special edition this and that, tin and silver foil covered comics and the rise of Image with art taking precedence over storytelling but as a little kid, I adored all the classic Spider-Man, Iron Man and Fantastic Four stories I could read, be they classic reprints from the 60s or stuff from the 70s. I really think Iron Man and Fanastic Four helped fuel my love of Sci-Fi. As a kid, I also regularly read The Flash (Barry Allen), The Mighty Thor, The Avengers and the Justice League of America.
As I got older, I got into the more serious adult stuff like Hellblazer and Sandman but I also loved the more horror oriented Marvel comics like Ghost Rider (both the Danny Ketch stuff and the reprints of the old Ghost Rider with Johnny Blaze), Morbius, Spirits of Vengeance as well as antiheroes like Wolverine and the Punisher. I was of course like most in the 90s a huge fan of the X-Men, Batman, Superman and Green Lantern and read all those big epic storylines with Batman getting broken, Superman dying and the fall of Hal Jordan and rise of Kyle Raynor. I also liked weird stuff like Sleepwalker and Deathlok but they soon began having way too many guest characters in them. I also read as many EC comic reprints as I could (I especially loved their Weird Fantasy/Weird Science reprints) and whatever comic versions of Star Trek and the X-Files I could find. Batman is another favorite, particularly stories with Penguin, Riddler or some of the lesser knowns. Several months ago I bought a bunch of old issues of STRANGE TALES, with some early Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, and Human Torch stories. Great stuff.
