Title: APOLLO 18 (2011)
Post by: indianasmith on December 29, 2011, 11:20:36 AM
This movie was a bit slow but very enjoyable - it is a "found footage" style movie about the top secret Apollo 18 mission that returned to the moon in December of 1974, and what they found there - which is the REAL reason we have never gone back.

The footage is incredibly well-shot, and looks a lot like the old NASA films from the moon's surface and inside the lunar landers.  The two astronauts are both solid and believable, and the "moon monsters" are not as scary as some extraterrestrial suspects from the past, but still kinda creepy - I don't want to give away too much. The discovery of the body of a Soviet cosmonaut is one of the movie's high points! Then the growing horror as the astronauts realized the impact of what they have found, and begin to come to terms with the reality that they are never going to return to earth.  It reminds you of just how much the real Apollo crews risked in undertaking man's only voyage to another world.  There are lots of deleted scenes, some good, some bad, but the extras are definitely worth watching.  BTW, the alternative ending is actually a bit better than the cinematic one.

If you don't mind a somewhat slow and understated horror film, this one is actually worth the watch.  Sometimes, as they say, less is more.  NASA has gone to the trouble to issue  a statement that APOLLO 18 is "just a movie."  Of course, they would say that!

I have to admit, I found this pretty boring and uneventful.  There were a few cool moments [such as the use of the flash in the crater] but they were few and very much too far between, plus most of the scares showed little of anything and more the reactions of the astronauts, which could have been cool if it wasn't for the fact that it just made it seem like someone made some noises and the actors were just screaming at the camera.  I really wanted this to be better, but sadly I was just meh.

There was an alternate ending? Shoot. Wish I still had the DVD.

I don't mind slow but this also added "dull" to the mix. When a sci-fi horror thriller puts you to sleep you know there's something wrong with it.

Yeah, I really enjoyed this one.  I think my favorite part was when the movie was over and we were leaving the theater I overheard an older guy tell his wife "Yup, that's what really happened.  That's why we haven't been back."
