Title: Taking Breaks from Technology
Post by: Flick James on January 02, 2012, 03:07:18 PM
I just got back from a holiday trip to Michigan, taking the boys to see their grandparents on their mom's side. It was a pleasant trip.

I didn't get on the Internet or use my mobile device for 11 days straight. I would call it a total break from technology since I watched plenty of movies on a nice 55-inch HD screen, but that was about it.

It was grand. I think it's important to take breaks from this technology-dependent reality we seem to live in.

I agree.

for me, when I'm not around it I don't tend to miss it. however when I'm surrounded with computer/i-pad/phone/tv/dvd/stereo etc I can't seem to do anything else lol. one thing I've never been is a hardcore 'gamer' though, so I've never overdosed on technology in that way

Did you have a chance to go see your Dad, Flick? If you did, I hope things are well between you.

Our trip to Washington was the same way...no internet in the cabin, no cell connection.  Even basic cable, and no movies for the DVD. The inability to look stuff up was tricky, but thats what brains are for.

It does seem to do one good to take some time away from technology, at least when it comes to getting caught up in internet drama and distraction, from time to time. Seems to help the old noggin function better. Some people though seem to be seriously addicted to being online and cannot fathom not being "in touch" everyday through Facebook, Twitter, whathaveyou.

I'm actually losing touch with a lot of technology coming out over the past few years.  They're dropkicking poorly made and pretty much useless crap down our throats at a beyond rapid pace.   I don't know hardly a thing about wifi, routers, etc nor do I really feel a need to get the latest smart phone, electronic pad, or whatever.  Its friggin overkill man, overkill.  If I want a computer, I have one at home on my desk.  That'll do for now.
