Title: Interesting/Funny Town Names
Post by: Flick James on January 25, 2012, 10:33:39 AM
I remember a thread about this some time ago, but I still find it an enjoyable topic. Here in Arizona there are lots of interesting/funny town names, such as Suprise, Tuba City, Carefree, Show Low and, of course, the infamous Tombstone.

I ran across one today that cracked me up: Point Blank, Texas.

I just get this strange feeling that not too many people break into houses in Point Blank, Texas.

There's always Intercourse, Pennsylvania.  A classic funny town name.  But there's plenty more!

Seman, Alabama
Bloody Diick, Montana
Cockland, Ohio
Glasscock, Ohio
Zip Down, Pennsylvania
Maggie's Nipple, Wyoming
Spuzzum, Canada
Titty Ho, England
Anus, France
Sexmoan, Philippines

I can keep going, but feel free to check this website where I found these towns:

Hell, Michigan

I grew up in Michigan, and the story we used to get told of the origin was a prominent citizen (the one whose trading post the town grew up around) asked what they should call the new settlement, and he didn't want to give one.  Pressed, he said, "Call it hell for all I care!"   :teddyr:

Michigan also has a town called Badaxe.  Yeah.

I was born in a city called Bulawayo in what was then Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. That city's original name in Ndebele was Gubulawayo which roughly translated means "place of the killing"  :buggedout:.

Strange place to be born in, huh? Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco was also born there.

Oddly enough, James, one of my good friends is from Point Blank!!!

Texas certainly has some odd place names:
Bugtussle
Muleshoe
Gun Barrell City

And some geographic names as well:
Italy
Palestine
Paris
Holland

There's lots more; those are just the ones I've been to!

Yes, come to Texas. It is so large, and there are so many towns and cities in it, I am sure you'll find something interesting. For example, here are 27 of my favorites. The number in the ( ) is the pop. from the last census.

Airport Road Addition (161)

Blue Berry Hill (866)
"They haven't lost their thrill."

Cut and Shoot (1070)

Dime Box (381)
In the days of yore, if you wanted to mail a letter, then you left it in a box by the side of the road, with a dime for postage, and someone would come along and take it to the nearest post office and mail it for ya."

Easter (026)

Frog (090)

Goober Hill (030)

Halfway (165)

Iraan (1229)
"It's pronounced like it sounds."

Jot-em-down (008)

King Ranch Headquarters (191)
"Everything is bigger in Texas."

Langtry (030)
"Named for actress Lily Langtry by Judge Roy Bean."

Mecca (048)

Noodle (040)

Oatmeal (074)

Pancake (011)

Quicksand (050)

Retreat (025)
"There's no such word in Texas. It's 'Advance to the rear!'"

Scrappin Valley (025)

Tiki Island (968)

Uncertain (094)

Valentine (134)

Waterloo (070)
"And that's where you'll meet your Waterloo."

Weeping Mary (085)

Yznaga (091)
"Easy enough for you to say."

As far as I can tell, there aren’t any city limits. For one thing, there isn’t any city.

Some folks have theorized that Monkey’s Eyebrow is a state of mind.

I'm well aware of the quaint and wonderful naming conventions of rural Kentucky. My ancestors were actually among the very first to settle Kentucky. There is a tiny little place outside of Bowling Green named after my family, Boyce, KY. It's not even a town, really, but it's got a weather listing on weather.com. Still plenty of Boyce's around KY and apparently they started Boyce College.
