Title: The Resurrected (1992)
Post by: Trevor on February 03, 2012, 06:42:01 AM
AKA Shatterbrain, directed by the man partly responsible for Alien.

I didn't actually know what to make of this movie, but what I did know is that director Dan O'Bannon seemed to have his tongue in his cheek a lot of the time amidst the horror in the story of a man who's found a way to live forever, "but it's messy".

To add to the confusion, the character I mentioned is named Charles Dexter Ward: that name sounds familiar...

This is among my favorite Lovecraft mythos movies, and I'd even say it often ranks at the top of them.  There is a bit of dark humor in the film, like the conversation between John and Joseph.  I also really enjoyed the ghastly sights that were used to convey the horror of things best left alone.

It is also a plausible course of events for a Lovecraft story set in the modern day.

I've seen it several times on the MGM channel that we get locally and every time there is something new that I either didn't quite see or grasp the previous time: some of those creatures were really quite un-nervingly almost human but not quite.

I also liked the conversation between John and Joseph in the asylum ("And as for thee, I should strip thy flesh from thy bones like a suckling pig" :buggedout:) and the general impression was that Lovecraft was served well as you said in the modern age.

I have been have been trying to find a DVD copy of this for a long time!  Only one I found was $79 on EBay.

I've been wanting to watch this one thanks to this site, but it never comes on TV around here, there's no way to rent it (all that's left of rental businesses out here are those rental kiosks, and Netflix in Canada still has terrible selection in comparison to our neighbours to the South), and I'm just not willing to pay $80 for a movie I adore, let alone one I've never seen before and don't know for sure if I'll like.

I'm hoping the cult DVD place in Edmonton may be able to find that rare cheap copy for me. Not to buy, of course, but to rent and enjoy; if it's up on the shelves in that store, after all, more people will have a chance to see it than if I bought it and kept it just on my shelf.
