I'm a vet, and this is just a stupid red-tape mistake typical of the Department of Veteran's Affairs. They are a government agency afterall. He'll get it sorted out eventually. I deal with the VA all the time with my education benefits and there's nothing more to this than it's a typical government agency f**k-up. I can tell you exactly what happened. Somebody somewhere within the vast bureaucracy that is the VA made a mistake, and the mistake happened to be a big one. With something as big as a "death" status, it doesn't surprise me that it takes this long to get it sorted out. No need to strike up the war drums. The guy just needs to keep on it until it gets resolved, which it will eventually. These kinds of government bureaucracy f**k-ups with the VA happen all the time. I work with VA benefits at my place of work all the time. Trust me on this. The only reason this is news is that it's a little bigger of a f**k-up than the norm, and I'm sure somebody wants to make a big deal out of it about how poorly our veterans are treated and the injustice of it all and yadda yadda yadda. Not really. I didn't see anything in the story that suggested that anybody was making a conscientious decision to keep his benefits from him. The only decisions being made are the typical ones made by government employees to be s**tty at their jobs. I also don't doubt that this story leaves the usual stuff out. Who's to say that the veteran isn't f**king up himself and not following up on things. Perfectly possible. I deal with veterans benefits and see a lack of follow-up from veterans all the time. Veterans benefits are like a rusty floodgate. It takes a lot of grease and effort to get the damn thing open, but once it's open, it's stuck open. My only problem is that stories like this tend to feed on emotions, like there is some government conspiracy to keep a veterans benefits from him or like somebody is trying to screw him. I know better. It's nothing but pure government red tape incompetence, nothing more. At the same time, he has a responsibility to himself to see it through via tenacious follow-up. Perhaps it's a shame that he has to do that, and it is to some extent, but still, just do what needs to be done, get your benefits, and move on.
