I saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow last night. It was even worse than I expected, and I expected it to be pretty bad. It wasn't even bad it a particularly amusing away, just dull. And the people in it were, by and large, too dumb to live.

Ted, I really don't know why you're pulling punches about this movie. You really need to come out of your shell and tell us what you really think.

I thought it was an ok movie, except for the ending.  Did they have to steal the end of Theodore Rex?

I agree with Ted C....I really looked forward to this movie after watching the previews at the theater. However,I was unable to see it til it reached DVD. Boy,I was seriously disappointed! It was trying so hard to be cool....maybe a bit too hard.

I didn't care for it either.  All style no substance.  The ending made me laugh (and not in a good way).  Angelina Jolie should be flippin' burgers somewhere. 

     Personally, I liked the movie; as per the ending, if you look closely, you'll see that the lens cap is NOT on Paltrow's camera.

Angelina phoned in that performance. While hungover.

I watched "Sky Captain" last night... story wise it was nothin' to write home about but I dug the overall retro/futuristic "look" of it, straight out of '30s serials and pulp magazines.

I've been reading some of the reviews of it on IMDb and wow, the people there seriously hated Gwyneth Paltrow. Haha. (best comment on her performance: "Legs 10, acting 2.") I thought she did fine considering that she didn't have much to do but tag along and be a pain in Sky Captain's a$$ the whole way.

The giant robots that attack Manhattan at the beginning were an obvious nod to Max Fleisher's classic "Superman" cartoon "The Mechanical Monsters."

Not terrible, but nothing I'd watch again any time soon either.

Lot of potential in that movie, but it didn't work at all for me.

It says something when the only good thing I can remember off the top of my head is that Angelina Jolie with a uniform, an eye patch and a British accent was kind of a turn-on. Other than that, my recollection is a jumble of vague images and plot fragments.

I really wanted this to be excellent, or at least fun.  The idea and style was very interesting ( love the retro future), the actual movie...no.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow holds title as the first major DVD I ever bought without first seeing the film either in theaters or elsewhere. I considered then and still consider doing such a thing to be very risky at best and a waste of money at worst since I tend to be picky about which movies (outside my comfort genres) I'll watch and which movies I'll pan without any knowledge of it whatsoever, as I'm sure any other rational and thinking person would do.

So I brought the movie home and watched it that night. Over time, the thoughts and opinions of others would reach me: chat rooms, forums, movie sites. What I read led me to a simple question: Am I really the only person that enjoyed this movie?

The story wasn't the greatest but I never felt at any time that I had lost the point and sure, the writing/acting could have been better at times but when I consider the majority of what makes up my collection it's at an acceptable level. I'm an effects guy and so from that standpoint I really had fun with Sky Captain. Everything has a soft sort of ethereal quality to it, like a childhood memory. The movie's filled with exotic places and strange creatures, hordes of robots and cool science fiction gadgetry.

Personally I loved it but then again, I've been known to have a thing for both Jolie and Paltrow in the past. But still I thought it was a fun mixture of cool stuff --robots, retro sci-fi elements, movie serials, etc...did feel a little disconnected though and like it was missing something. Still I did love it.

Funny how this topic popped up in the last few days, because I watched about half of it again last night.  The first time I saw it was in its theatrical release, and I quite enjoyed it.  But last night it seemed kind of slowish and disconnected.  Sure, the scenes and treatment are amazing, the modeling and props are cool, but as a movie it just didn't grab me as it did in the cinema.

Mind you, in recent years I've been absolutely pulling films apart to deconstruct camera angles, direction and overall flow.  Perhaps I've just become much more critical.

This one p**sed my feminist friend off to no end. She hated it with a passion but wouldn't elaborate.
Personally I thought the movie had its moments, but I wasn't exactly crazy about it either. Cool f/x and set design though.

I liked it, but I think that's because I went in fully expecting it to be all style over substance. Also I remember hearing that there's an Easter Egg in the movie. That during the robots initial attack on NY you can see King Kong climbing one of the buildings in the background.

I kind of enjoyed but more for the atmosphere and the world of it then the acting.  I kind of like that 30's - 40's style on display though done up to the extreme and through a modern lens.

I still need to see this one.  maybe it's time to add it to my Netflix queue.
