Title: Parody Novels: Your Favorite?
Post by: InformationGeek on February 15, 2012, 01:06:32 PM
With Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter coming soon to theaters, let's take a moment to think about all the parody novels out there.  We have that book obviously, we have Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Snowball's Chance, George Washington Werewolf, Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, and more.

Of all of the parody novels out there, what are your favorite?  To be honest, I haven't read one yet, but I am interested.  Maybe I find a particular one when you guys bring up your favorites.

EMPEROR MOLLUSK And The Sinister Brain.
Its super villian/overlord changes gig, and has to find out who wants him dead. Lots of suspects.
Well written take on the genre, I think.
Oh, and he's a Neptunian octopus who works out of various exoskeletal suits. But he's a Brilliant scientist who needed a change of occupation.

Bored of the Rings from 1969, despite containing some terribly dated topical humor, is still a classic parody novel. The character names alone are worth it. For example:

Dildo Bugger
Pepsi Dingleberry
Gimlet, son of Groin
Legolam
Eorache, daughter of Eorlobe
Goddam
Ballhog
Nozdrul

The De Villiers Code ~ the SA version of The Da Vinci Code

Fart Proudly ~ supposedly written by Benjamin Franklin.  :teddyr:

From Wikipedia:

Quote
I have perused your late mathematical Prize Question, proposed in lieu of one in Natural Philosophy, for the ensuing year...Permit me then humbly to propose one of that sort for your consideration, and through you, if you approve it, for the serious Enquiry of learned Physicians, Chemists, &c. of this enlightened Age. It is universally well known, That in digesting our common Food, there is created or produced in the Bowels of human Creatures, a great Quantity of Wind. That the permitting this Air to escape and mix with the Atmosphere, is usually offensive to the Company, from the fetid Smell that accompanies it. That all well-bred People therefore, to avoid giving such Offence, forcibly restrain the Efforts of Nature to discharge that Wind.

BORED OF THE RINGS! Ah, yes. By the Harvard Lampoon.
Right up there with the Frank Herbert parody DOON!
Replace spice with beer? Works for me.

The Princess Bride made me chuckle more than the movie did.
even though this next one isn't a novel, I thought I would include it: A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is just flat out funny.

People have been telling me to avoid Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, But I just want to read it for the heck off it. I mean it just kinda catches your eye and makes you wonder What is in those pages.

It is good to see all the love for Harvard Lampoon's "Bored of the Rings." It is the first parody novel I ever read, and still has one of the best put-downs I have ever seen, before or since. It is when the King of Tudor says:

"'Those who still ride with the King of Tudor will live forever in song and legend. The rest may go.' It is said that the dust cloud did not settle for many days after."

Just ROTFL! It is such a well written sentence, that when ever I see it, an image of what happens forms in my mind. LOL!

Never read parody novels. Humorous ones, yes, but not parodies.

Will check out some named here.

     This one, from 1976....

This was a spot-on spoof of the making of that hunk of Canadian cheese, THE STARLOST. Devastatingly funny, except perhaps to Harlan Ellison.
