Awww man, that's a shame. I was introduced to his work through "Cracked" magazine as a kid, loved his stuff. R.I.P.

Sad news, but remember that John Severin lived a very long life. 90 years old.

For those who aren't familiar with Severin's work, he is on a very short list of absolutely phenomenal illustrators. The guy was just a genius, and one of the best artists to work in comics ever. Even when he was doing low-rent stuff for Cracked his artwork did not miss a beat.

Severin was still doing professional work right up to his recent demise. Most recently he had a spin in the Hellboy universe on Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder.

Just look at this:

Even today that art is leagues away better than what is being put out, and this guy was doing this before comics got accepted by the mainstream and gained some real talent. That little snippet shows that not only was he a master of the human form, but an excellent draftsman as well.

And lest you think I'm too harsh on Cracked magazine (a magazine I loved as a kid), Severin could actually impart humor into his artwork while still retaining a level of excellence many would chomp at the bit to attain.

John Severin deserves every accolade that has ever made its way to him.

^ I agree! As a kid I enjoyed his work in SGT.FURY and his HOWLING COMMANDO's, CREEPY magazine, and recently I bought a book that collects all the issues of Warren Pub.'s BLAZING COMBAT series that features some fantastic art by Mr.Severin!

from an issue of CREEPY...

Same here. Cracked was a pretty goofy mag but Severin's work for it was always amazingly detailed. He didn't half-ass it.
