Title: Possible malware warning?
Post by: dean on February 17, 2012, 07:04:46 AM
The last two or so times I logged in via chrome I got a 'potential malware' warning which I assume comes from an ad linked on the page [either that or my computer is virus ridden, but I haven't got the error elsewhere.]

I didn't get a screen shot but I copied the text in case it helps identify the culprit:

Warning: Something's Not Right Here!
www.badmovies.org contains content from animated-views.com, a site known to distribute malware. Your computer might catch a virus if you visit this site.
Google has found that malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed. Why not try again tomorrow or go somewhere else?
We have already notified animated-views.com that we found malware on the site. For more about the problems found on animated-views.com, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page.

A quick jump around the site got me to that page about three times when clicking different forum threads for a few minutes, so I'm pretty sure its one of the ads.

Wow, this is a hard one.  I looked through and could not get a script from animated-views.com to come up at all.  However, what is harder to see if something else is being served from there - such as a graphic.  Looking at the diagnostic page for that site, it appears that it is not on the warning list for hosting malware.  It appears that they had a rogue or software injection that distributed malware.  I'll keep looking to see if I can find the ad which caused this, but it is also possible it is geo-targeted and I'll never see it due to being in the US and you Australia.

Chrome shot me the same warning, twice, and I'm from the U.S.  Both times I was looking at the "youtube of the day" thread in the entertainment forum.

Curses!  I've been browsing for what, 30 or 40 minutes now and haven't encountered any script from that site.  I believe I'd be able to see even a .swf animation.  Chrome has to be generating that warning about some other file, and it is most likely a .gif or .jpg.

Here is the really ironic part of this.  I'm betting that the Google ads are where the ad is coming from.  I'm going to add that site to my blocked list there and see if it helps, but the block is not instantly activated.

The good thing here is that, based on what I know of the alert and what I'm seeing, there is no malicious code being served.  It's the fact that animated-views.com tripped Google's system in the last few days.  Badmovies.org is clear, with 0 visitors receiving malware via ads, per Google's system.

Yeah I'm getting the hit on the recent viewings thread if that helps to narrow it down, but based on the warning, it seems like a google thing, warning that there is a link/ad on the site that may have been hit by a malware problem, and that it isn't a problem with the badmovies site in particular, but hopefully the block will work when it comes into effect.  Will keep you posted if it comes back the next time I log in

I got the same thing when I wanted to go to recent viewings also.
