Title: Trancers II: The Return of Jack Deth (1991)

Blech.

I watched Trancers a few years ago, and thought it was a great movie. No really, it's great! A fine example of low-budget '80s fun.

Six years later we have Trancers II, which was not nearly as much fun. I'd like to blame most of it on the budget, but the previous film clearly showed that a lot of fun could be had with a low budget. The problem with this sequel is that it's kind of boring and lazy. All the inventiveness of the first film is just kind of trotted out once again. None of it matters much, and most of the film is conversations with little action, and the dialogue isn't exactly sparkling.

It's not terrible and I didn't hate it, it was just kind of... lazy.

It does have a great cast. I can never be mad at Tim Thomerson, and Helen Hunt hadn't made her big break into "legitimate" films yet, so she's still present (she's not great). Jeffrey Combs has a bit part, Art LaFleur is present, as is Barbara Crampton, and the always weird looking Richard Lynch plays the bad guy. And let's not forget Megan Ward. She's not a great actress, and this movie certainly doesn't disprove that point, but I have a great fondness for Megan Ward in anything that's terrible, which is most of the movies she's been in.

I kind of liked it, 3 out of 5 stars, but that's probably only because I'm feeling generous. This is a pretty poor movie, but it does have its moments. For instance, there was a ham-bomb. Actually, "ham-bomb" is a pretty good description of this movie, so make that your take-away moment for this review.
