Title: Lottery winner says that she still deserves food-card assistance
Post by: Andrew on March 07, 2012, 08:54:01 PM
This has to be read to be believed.  I'd swear that this was a story from The Onion and not CNN:

Yes, We all deserve everything handed  to us by Govt, however, we want Govt. to stay out of our business. Welcome to the new schizoid man. I have to dig out my old Sex Pistols albums, play the, while I watch films of war, peace demonstrations and 3 stooges film with the sound off again. :twirl:

"...play the..."?  Oh, you mean "play them".  The first one is the only worthwhile effort.

Amanda Clayton hit it big playing the Michigan Lottery. Like many winners, she used her $1 million prize to buy a new house.

Quote
Asked if she had the right to the public assistance money, Clayton answered, "I kind of do. I have no income, and I have bills to pay. I have two houses."

Gotta love it   :teddyr:

Sad.........though the government pretty much screws the taxpayers over much worse than this young lady.  Of course not defending her or her actions.

I'm actually not terribly surprised by this article.

My reasons for not liking things like welfare or food stamps or basically any kind of extensive government cheese is not because I am unsympathetic or don't want people who are down on their luck to get a little support. It's because in a general sense these things just lower society. It leaves an indelible mark on societal life expectations. Extensive collection of these types of government supports and encourages people to expect such little out of life, not to step up and acheive anything for themselves, be it money or happiness or just general self-governance/self-reliance.

This is why this article doesn't really shock me. It doesn't surprise me that a person who has been dependent on government cheese would struggle to break herself out of the kind of thinking and behavior that such systems perpetuate.

I hate to say it being the non-religious person that I am, but let the churches handle support of the poor like in the old days. At least the person seeking help is more likely to run into somebody that genuinely cares about them getting their life together and not be stuck in a revolving door of government services that not only don't care about whether or not they get their s**t together, but likely want them to remain dependent so that their funding can continue.

End of rant.

Why doesn't she sell one of her houses....especially if she is "struggling". And extra especially if she didn't need a second one. This is bizarre.

BION, Flickie, I'm with you on this one. I grew up in the War on Poverty system, and it's done far more harm than good, in that you have so many professional victims who believe they're owed something.

Presently, I recieve food card benefits, as I am unemployed. I WANT to work; if I could find a job, they'd get their frickin' card back so fast the edges would be melted.

I believe that Welfare should be a hand up....to only be used until the recipient is able to support themselves. Not as a way of life for each passing generation. However,as donations to church-sponsored charity groups grow less,it is harder for them to help people. So many folks are using the multi-church Ministery Alliance in our town that they must turn away too many as it is. What we need to do is....GET AMERICA BACK TO WORK!

1.Stop outsourcing jobs

2.If you call yourself an American company, then hire here and manufacture it here

3.Make the penalties for hiring illegal workers too expensive and add jail time

Welfare could be greatly lessened if Americans were working like they used to.

*steps off soapbox*

I think many many folks would much rather work.  And I agree with Tracy... I would pay more for my goods if I knew my country was being paid to make em.

I'm a fan of the three original Stooges mostly. Shemp I liked pretty much but Joe Derita and Joe Besser I found annoying. Especially Besser...that dude was like fingernails on a black board.

I saw this a lot at my factory job.  A lot of people there were on food stamps or housing assistance despite working 40+ hours a week, because our wages just didn't stretch enough for them -- many of them elderly, with medical bills that what little insurance the company offered didn't cover.  And then there were people like the guy who was exploiting a loophole to get 3 times what he "should" have been getting in food stamps AND still stole other people's food out of refrigerator.
