Title: George Takei
Post by: claws on April 01, 2012, 01:49:47 PM
I've noticed for several weeks or months that some of my friends (and friends of friends) on Facebook started to 'worship' George Takei. They love to link to or post his quotes and, whatever comment he makes is apparently drool worthy, cool, a million thumbs up, whatever.
I never gave Takei much attention because to me this seems like another 'trend' thing to do. Unless I'm missing the big picture here, what makes him so special?

He posts a LOT and a good portion of it is quite amusing.  And he does not hold much back in his comments.

I haven't "friended" him on FB but several of my friends have, and they're constantly re-posting and sharing the pics and stuff he puts up... a lot of it is funny as hell, geeky humor. Good stuff.

Does anybody realise that he himself is just SHARING stuff. All the posts aren't stuff George has put together in his spare time. I'm pretty sure if any of us had been in Star Trek five billion years ago, then we'd be FB sensations also.

Sure, he's sharing stuff, but he manages to find a lot of really funny stuff, or gets it sent to him. If I look at all the joke items other people post, most of the ones I think are funny enough to share come from George. He might not have made them, but he did bring them to my attention. And I reposted them because they were funny, not because of where I got them.

Plus, George's own material can be funny as well. He's not shy with his opinions, and he does shoot from the hip. One of the few celebrities who can address a serious issue with humour without appearing preachy or losing any of the seriousness. "You.... are a douchebag." He might be the only celebrity activist who doesn't annoy me.

As for the Star Trek connection, I was never a big fan of George Takei as Sulu. On the other hand, George Takei, the funny old gay guy, is a lot of fun.

I think GEORGE TAKEI (as in, toupee...) is funny.  But I don't do Facebook much.

I've read a few of the Takei things posted. Some were amusing, some I didn't care about. I decided its nothing I really need in my life but its hard to ignore when Takei is constantly showing up in my FB feed through friends. Ah well.

The reason I know about George Takei's amusing side is almost solely because of AndyC.

He's funny, which is all I care about, and he really seems to have a handle on his image as a nerd icon. He understands his fan base and seems to enjoy them. You couldn't say the same for Shatner.

Not sure where you're getting the "worship" thing from. It's amusing goofy stuff. Don't like it? Don't pay attention. Pretty easy choice.

I was referring to my FB friends and friend's friends. Quite a few use Takei profile pics and Takei profile covers and yes, countless Takei quotes in their profiles.

I've always liked Mr Takei and most of his posts on FB make me smile, especially the pic of two stoned cats seeing bats.  :teddyr:

Good point. There are a few celebrities who are making really good use of Facebook, to interact much more with their fans in an almost friendly way, and it pays off for them.

There are many more who will just throw press releases, news clippings and appearance dates at you. You get nothing personal, and what you do get is basically ads and canned copy. They use new tools in the same old way, and spam you until you start blocking them to be rid of the clutter. And many don't even bother to post personally.

But some of them actually see the true potential of Facebook, and what people want from it. They're smart enough to give you something more than just blatant self-promotion, and make it fit in with all of the other stuff your friends are posting. George Takei is one of those people. He gets it.

I liked  him on Trek, met him once, got a  creepy vibe  from him. He may be a nice  guy, just seemed a bit creepy. I think his  new found fame is mostly due to his 'coming out.' I mean it's  not like anyone thought he was Gay on Star Trek.   :teddyr:
