Title: The Darkest Hour (2011)
Post by: InformationGeek on April 13, 2012, 09:54:28 AM
The film is finally hitting DVD this week from what I hear, so time to start talking about it.  An alien invasion is happening across the globe and our film focuses what is going on over in Russia during the events.

First of all, I love how all the actors speak english and don't even have an russian accent at all.  Secondly, is it just me, or does this look like something Asylum would push out, just with better special effects?  Could be just me.

I don't have much else to say, but it doesn't really look good.  The vaporize effects look cool, but that's it.  Anyone care to look at this?

It looks kind of fun, I'll have to check it out when it hits Netflix or the used DVD price gets down to three bucks.

OK, the wife and I rented this one tonight, and hey!  It wasn't bad at all!
The main characters are actually three Americans, an English girl, and a Swede who are in Moscow
for different reasons when they get caught up in an alien invasion which proceeds to powderize most
of the population pretty quickly.  They manage to discover how to hide from the monsters, then how
to fight them over the course of the film.  THis move is FAR better than SKYLINE (of course, that's not
saying much) but not as cheesy as INDEPENDENCE DAY or SIGNS.  It had more of a big budget ATTACK
THE BLOCK feel to it.  Really very enjoyable.  I highly recommend it.

It was largely meh.

Minor spoilers:

I guess this is highlighted by the fact that in the middle of a very tense and suspenseful scene when they're in the club and the aliens start killing everyone, the main characters just lock themselves in a room and the film grinds to a halt as they 'wait it out'.  I get why the scene's there, but that club attack had a lot more potential than they allowed it to have, and this can be extended to the rest of the film.
