Title: CHARLIE BARLETT (2007)
Post by: ulthar on April 15, 2012, 06:29:12 PM
CHARLIE BARTLETT is a teen comedy that has a few laugh moments and is far from crude (like many teen comedies).

17 year old Charlie is very, very rich but gets expelled from ritzy boarding school.  His Mom, with mental illness of her own, puts him in public high school.  His first day, he gets beat up and meets a girl (not in that order).

He quickly realizes that he can make a name for himself by becoming the student body's 'underground' psychiatrist, including 'prescribing' certain medications.  He becomes something of cult hero and one of the most popular boys in school.

This unravels a little with the attempted suicide of one of the students and when the anger of the principle (the girl's father) comes to a head.  The ending, the last line, fits the character and the movie well.

Solid acting performances by Anton Yelchin, Hope Davis, Robert Downey, JR,  Kat Dennings and Tyler Hilton make this an enjoyable teen angst comedy.  I did find the shades of PUMP UP THE VOLUME to be a bit distracting at times and there was a nod or two toward SIXTEEN CANDLES that I found fun.
