Why is law enforcement officers this year being a***oles? just tell me, please. first there's the guy who got arrested when cops planted substance in his car, the slow response to the Trayvon slaying (though still being searched into) and police killing a dog at the wrong address, when they knew it was the wrong address.

I don't necessarily have a disagreement with them. This is quite literally a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. How would story look if the headline instead was "young child severely injured throwing a tantrum while her teacher and policed stood by and just watched"?

Have you ever tried to restrain someone who is out of control? Even with a small child that is difficult, and especially so as being a small child they can easily be hurt.

Sometimes the better part of valor is to restrain someone, not just for their own safety but for the safety of others as well.

Yes, since the child is so young in this case it needs to be looked into...thoroughly. The officers involved were not in a situation any officer wants to be in.

Unfortunately the majority of incidents an officer has to deal with are domestic, and they are often walking a fine line in the actions they take to deal with it. That doesn't mean they don't need to walk a fine line; they do, or else the number of bad decisions they make in dealing with situations will increase.

First, Yahoo News is well, for Yahoos, usually  far-left ones, so one has to take what is written with a  grain of salt. Second, the word  'handcuffs'  could mean restraints, not metal like on 'COPS.' Third, I wasn't there, and as is emerging the Trayvon 'mob rules'  case, there may be more to that story than our race baiting press  was saying in this case. Of course, none  of this matters, since  cop hating is  a sport journalists love and inner city folks who are poor can be led to blame for being screwed by politicians.

I know of a psychotic kindergarten student that sent her teacher to the ER TWICE this school year.
And is still in the classroom.

I read this story in the paper and have to say I think the cops did the right thing....the child was violent and resisted everyone so restraining her was for her own protection as well as everyone around her. I wish someone had said whether she had a history of such misbehavior, either at home or at school. She tore stuff off the walls, threw toys at people and even hit the principal in the leg with a small shelf. And even though her aunt went around telling people that they put her in a cell and she was scared to death,it came out that they merely held her in the squad room and offered her a soda,to try and calm her down. No...I think this child needed to be restrained for everyone's sake. Besides, I think it's getting ridiculous that teachers cannot apply even the remotest forms of disclipline in the classroom without someone squawking or boo-hooing about it. If the parents have trouble handling her then get some help...this sort of unruly behavior isn'r doing the child any favors. And I also don't think that the lesson of handcuffs is too harsh...she needs to know that there are consequences to her actions.

Quite right. It is exceedingly difficult to restrain a kid throwing a tantrum, especially when you are trying not to hurt them and they don't care if they hurt themselves or you.

And it is surprising the kind of misbehaviour some kids that age are capable of, and how little supervision they get in today's understaffed schools. It's one of the reasons we are currently experimenting with homeschooling right now.

And if calling the cops seems extreme, keep in mind that many of the more traditional forms of discipline have been taken away from teachers, and the potential threat of scandal, legal action, accusations of abuse or unfair treatment, etc., make them reluctant to do what they can. Especially when many parents these days are more likely to ream them out for it than back them up. It's not the school's fault that the only safe option left is to call the police and pass the responsibility on to them. And they cover their own asses by following strict arrest procedures that include handcuffs. Again, not their fault.

Yeah.  People in public positions are more likely to call the police over things (or ask the officer near by) to do things for precisely these reasons.  I worked in a library, and at times we'd make "requests" of people (who were doing things they shouldn't), but if they didn't comply pretty much calling the cops was all we could do.  It's pretty unfortunate for everyone, really.
