Title: Here is a big big question
Post by: WyreWizard on April 25, 2012, 08:56:11 AM
Why is it in every film, the villains have a tremendous advantage over the heroes?  Why is it we practically never see the protagonists and antagonists on equal footing?  Or even the protagonists having such a tremendous advantage over the villain, that the villains are like ants under their boots?

I mean sure 99% of the time, the protagonists win in the end.  But come on, why can't we see the protagonists in power when the movie starts?  Why is the protagonist's edge over the antagonist never obvious until halfway through or three-quarters of the way through the film?

I mean this is all too much like the third worst film I rated.  That's is why I rate 99.9% of all movies as bad.  They are completely unrealistic flights of fancy.

I mean too many of them copy the old David vs Goliath adage, which I doubt ever really happened because you would need a lot or more a stone thrown from a sling to to down a guy 6'8 or taller wearing a helm (slings aren't very accurate weapons, mind you.  So your chances of hitting a target with a sling is all dependent on the luck of the draw.)  I mean face it, the one with the power wins 99% of the time.  The only reason we hear so much about the little guy winning against the big guy is because those are very rare examples.  We practically never hear about The Big Guy squashing the little guy beneath his heel.

I mean face it, anyone who would willingly fight someone 3 feet taller and a hundred pounds heaver than they with nothing but their bare hands is out of their minds.  If I saw someone like that, I would do anything BUT cross him.  I may wave to him, ask him directions, tell him a joke or even give him money if he asks.

Because watching the protagonist do something that wasn't the least bit challenging would be pretty dull.

So I guess seeing the good guy lose his home, his wife and family is entertaining to you.  I guess seeing the good guy get shot at, stabbed to death, poisoned or beaten to a bloody mess is entertaining.

And by challenging, do you mean overcoming odds that can never be overcome by any human being?  Like, ohh say stopping a black hole from crashing into the Earth?

What would be the point of showing something which happens 99% of the time?  We can see that in reality!  Honestly we need to see people triumph over insurmountable odds to give us courage for our own challenges.  Everyone will face tough times sometime in their life; these "impossible" stories give us courage to fight our own seemingly impossible battles.

P.S. If a sling was such an inaccurate weapon, why was it ever used?

So you say people cannot find the courage within themselves to overcome their challenges?  They have to watch ridiculous and unrealistic flights of fancy to get that courage?  We as humans have courage within ourselves and we don't need ridiculous stories to find them.  If they can't find their courage, they should read self-help books.

These ridiculous stories don't inspire me at all.  They just make me question what their writers were high on when they wrote them.  And I have seen movies that drive people to do stupid things.

Why was the sling used when it was such an inaccurate weapon?  Well lets just say it was the forerunner to far more accurate projectile weapons like the bow and arrow.  In the time slingshots were used, bows and arrows were unheard of.  Mankind didn't know certain types of woods are flexible.  But when this was discovered, it lead to the creation of the bow and arrow.  And as the sources for their raw materials were found in abundance, making them became cheaper.  And as the bow and arrow became the standard, the sling fell by the wayside and was no longer used.

Now look at the way the sling works.  You load it with a projectile, then you spin it above your head to give the projectile momentum.

Now why don't you make a sling, Just take some clothesline rope, a cloth (leather or canvas) and some electrical or duct tape.  Cut the cloth in an oval shape.  Sew the edges in to form a sort of bowl shape.  Then take the clothesline rope, cut it in two.  Attach them to the narrow ends of the cloth.  Then take the electrical or duct tape and wrap it around the ends of the rope your hands will grip so the rope doesn't cause rope burn.  There, you have made a medieval sling with modern materials.  For a projectile, use a tennis or baseball.  Now go outside and set up and archery target.  Stand about ten feet from the target.  Take about 10 baseballs or tennis balls.  Load one into the sling.  Twirl it over your head to give the projectile momentum.  If you're using baseballs, three revolutions will do.  But you're using tennis balls, a few more revolutions will be needed as they are lighter.  Now try and hit the target.  Make how many times the balls actually hit the target.  Now step twenty feet back and try it again.  Then thirty feet.

"How DARE movies meant to be entertaining flights of fantasy be unrealistic!?!"

How is it you can look at the world and ask "why is everybody wrong but me?" instead of wondering what's wrong with yourself?

Isn't that basically what you do every time you post here and try to tell us we're wrong?

You seem to struggle understanding the basic concept of inspiration, much like you struggle to understand suspension of disbelief and fiction in general.

Basically people strive on conflict.  Having somebody struggle is more entertaining than watching somebody effortlessly win.

No one should read self help books.  Ever.

Yes, but that's you and you are ... how to put this nicely.... umm... completely insane.

Oh I see so people shouldn't read encyclopedias either.  They shouldn't read books like Men are From Mars Women are from Venus, The Secret, or anything to further themselves or their lives.  Your views sound massively depressing.  NTY

Oh and as for calling me insane, my mother always told me it takes one to know one.

Yeah, what's so unrealistic about them is the guy in over 99% of them have a certain part of their anatomy enlarged to a degree that is rare and uncomfortable for most women. Alot of times, you can see how uncomfortable it is for the actresses. Also what's so unrealistic about them is  really beautiful and sexy women being attracted to guys who are often a challenge to look at.

I know Big Breasted actresses are desired for films like these.  But yet, actresses with naturally big breasts are hard to come by.  So a lot of these big breasted actresses are not natural.  They have their breasts augmented to make them look big and that is not pretty to look at.

I'm going to assume someone already said this, but its because people almost always root for an underdog and want to see them over come there problems. Its also easier to relate to someone who isn't perfect because well most of us aren't perfect.

Its a plot device, been used since fiction started.
