Title: MADISON COUNTY (2011)
Post by: indianasmith on May 09, 2012, 11:19:55 PM
A touching romance about a married woman's passionate affair with a photographer, who is visiting the area to photograph its covered bridges . . . wait, no, that's the OTHER Madison County movie.

OK, this one is a slasher film.  I really debated whether to put it on the Good Movies or Bad Movies side of the forum, but it wound up over here because it really was a movie that I could not quit watching or do any fast forwarding through, despite its $70,000 budget.

A group of college kids travel to a remote Appalachian county to interview the reclusive author of a book who asserts that an unknown serial killer had murdered over 30 people there without ever being caught.  When they arrive, the locals assure them that the killer, Damien, is just a myth, and that the author left town long ago.

Of course, the kids investigate and find out the truth is different - before they die.

This slasher film features a genuinely scary killer in a pig mask, and some main characters who are a bit more developed and interesting than your standard chainsaw fodder.  However, it never takes the time to explain what the heck is going on.  Who is Damien?  HOw is he related to the mysterious author? Why do the towns people cover for him?  Who are the two giggling topless girls who lead the first college kid to his untimely end?

The movie had some good scare scenes and some genuinely suspenseful moments, but in the end, it really left me wanting a much better denouement - there was simply too much story never explained!

That being said, I sure didn't turn it off, either.  Compelling but in the end, a bit disappointing.  But you can bet if there is a sequel I will watch it!
