Title: BERNIE (2011)
Post by: Rev. Powell on June 22, 2012, 11:41:31 AM
The residents of a small East Texas town can't believe that their mild-mannered and much beloved assistant funeral director has been accused of murdering the richest---and b***hiest---widow in town. Jack Black is impressive in this friendly black comedy and proves that he can be still be funny when subtle, but the real stars of the film are the citizens of Carthage, Texas (some played by real townspeople), who act as the comic chorus and paint an endearing, funny and believable portrait of small town life.

Based on a true story. Wouldn't be surpised to see Shirley McClain up for some Best Supporting Actress awards (out of sympathy, mainly). Black definitely deserves a Best Actor nomination.

Texans and ex-Texans (like me) should really like this one!

It's strange that with Jack Black, Shirley McClain, Matthew McConnaghey, and Richard Linklater directing that this didn't get better distribution, but it seems to be doing well on word of mouth. It was brought here for a one week run and has been held over for a third week. 4/5 stars (you might even go 4.5/5).
